The concept of using nuclear reactor technology in propulsion systems is nearly as old as nuclear reactors themselves. Numerous publications, many at very primitive conceptual levels, suggested nuclear propulsion in the 1940s. Since then, numerous attempts have been made to build and fly a nuclear rocket, yet there have been no such systems advanced to the point of a system test in more than half a century.

Remote sensing of ionizing radiation has a significant role in waste management, nuclear material management and nonproliferation, radiation safety, and accident response in situations such as the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. Robotic platforms are able to surpass the number of tasks that could be achieved by humans. With the use of robots, the operator’s radiation exposure can be considerably decreased. Remote sensing allows for the evaluation and monitoring of radiological contamination in hazardous and hard to reach areas and locating radiation sources. As future crewed, deep space missions are being planned, it is important to assess how spacecraft design can be used to minimize radiation exposure. Collectively with shielding material, vehicle shape and astronaut position must be used to protect astronauts from the two primary sources of space radiation: Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) and Solar Particle Events (SPE). GCRs, which are composed of low intensity, highly energetic, and fully ionized stable and meta-stable isotopes, are considered a chronic source of radiation risk to the astronauts.
