Current orthopedic implants are overwhelmingly composed from metallic materials. These implants show superior mechanical properties, but this can additionally result in stress shielding due to a modulus mismatch between the bone tissue and implanted device. Polymeric implants reduce this stress shielding effect but have much lower mechanical properties, limiting their use. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a widely used biodegradable thermoplastic polymer, however, its use has been limited by the polymer’s mechanical properties and rapid loss of strength during degradation in vivo. Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is another common biocompatible polymer , with chemical and mechanical properties which make it a popular alternative …

Optical-Fiber-Based Laser-Induced Cavitation For Dynamic Mechanical Characterization Of Soft Materials, Qian Feng

Masters Theses

In the laser-induced cavitation (LIC) technique, a vapor-gas cavity is generated in water, or a soft material by focusing an intense laser pulse into the sample. The high-strain-rate mechanical properties of these samples can be investigated through a real-time size measurement of the expanding cavity bubble. Although this LIC technique has been applied to multiple research fields such as mechanical, biological and medical areas. It is possible to simplify and improve this LIC method by introducing optical-fibers. In this approach, we propose to employ an optical-fiber to deliver the intense laser pulse to an arbitrary position of an optical opaque …

The Effect Of Cell Size And Surface Roughness On The Compressive Properties Of Abs Lattice Structures Fabricated By Fused Deposition Modeling, Leah Hope Mason

Masters Theses

"Postprocessing is an important step in many manufacturing methods, but it is especially important for additive manufacturing. Researchers looking to improve the surface roughness of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) parts fabricated by fused deposition modeling (FDM) have determined that acetone smoothing not only achieves improved surface roughness but increases compressive strength as well. This could be very beneficial to lattice structures, which are known for already having an excellent strength to weight ratio. If the compressive strength of ABS lattice structures could be improved even further using acetone smoothing, it could expand the applications for plastic lattice structures and improve …

Numerical Simulation Of Multi-Phase Core-Shell Molten Metal Drop Oscillations, Kaushal Sumaria

Masters Theses

The surface tension of liquid metals is an important and scientifically interesting parameter which affects many metallurgical processes such as casting, welding and melt spinning. Conventional methods for measuring surface tension are difficult to use for molten metals above temperatures of 1000 K. Containerless methods are can be used to measure the surface tension of molten metals above 1000 K. Oscillating drop method is one such method where a levitated droplet is allowed to undergo damped oscillations. Using the Rayleigh’s theory for the oscillation of force-free inviscid spherical droplets, surface tension and viscosity of the sample can be calculated from …

Hybrid Manufacturing Processes For Fusion Welding And Friction Stir Welding Of Aerospace Grade Aluminum Alloys, Megan Alexandra Gegesky Jan 2016

Hybrid Manufacturing Processes For Fusion Welding And Friction Stir Welding Of Aerospace Grade Aluminum Alloys, Megan Alexandra Gegesky

Masters Theses

"Friction stir welding and processing can provide for joints in aerospace grade aluminum alloys that have preferable material properties as compared to fusion welding techniques. Aerospace grade aluminum alloys such as AA2024-T3 and AA7075-T6 are considered non-weldable by traditional fusion welding techniques. Improved mechanical properties over previously used techniques are usually preferable for aerospace applications. Therefore, by combining traditional fusion welding and friction stir processing techniques, it could be plausible to create more difficult geometries in manufactured parts instead of using traditional techniques. While this combination of fusion welding and friction stir processing is not a new technology, its introduction …

Kinetics Of Aluminization And Homogenization In Wrought H-X750 Nickel-Base Superalloy, Sean Reilly Aug 2014

Kinetics Of Aluminization And Homogenization In Wrought H-X750 Nickel-Base Superalloy, Sean Reilly

Masters Theses

In sub-millimeter sheets of wrought H-X750 Nickel-base superalloy, aluminum-rich coatings are bonded to matrix with a vapor phase aluminization process. If an appropriate amount of aluminum is bonded to matrix with homogenization treatment, the resulting diffusion couple will diffuse into coherent (g/g’) heterogeneous phases creating matrix that is both precipitation and solid solution strengthened.

The diffusional mechanisms for solid solution mass transport involved with the growth and dispersion of bonded aluminum-rich coatings in the aluminization process only differ from the no external mass flow homogenization process with annealing treatment in that the boundary conditions are different. In each case these …

Reduced Leak Calibration Uncertainties By The Outgassing Quantification Method, Philip Mason Carper May 2012

Reduced Leak Calibration Uncertainties By The Outgassing Quantification Method, Philip Mason Carper

Masters Theses

Standard leaks are used throughout industry for various applications, such as gas transfer, calibration of mass spectrometers, and calibration of leak detectors. The ability to provide a controlled delivery of gases at relatively low flow rates makes standard leaks a popular choice for calibration standards. This ability also allows for precise quantities of gas to accumulate over time. The accumulation of gas from standard leaks is used as a “transfer standard” for making in-process adjustments to measurement instrumentation. With the advent of tighter quality control constraints, the quantification and control of leak rates is becoming an increasingly important matter, placing …
