Center For Manufacturing Excellence Capstone Project: Sec Rivals Checkers, Ward Winstead

Honors Theses

Each year, the seniors in the Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence complete a capstone project. A team comprised of seniors in varying disciplines work to develop a business model focused on producing a specific product. This team, SEC Rivals Checkers, chose to produce wooden checker boards where each half of a board is custom to a specific SEC school. These halves were designed to be interchangeable, so a variety of different combination could be created when utilizing the product. Through initial marketing analysis, cost estimation, prototyping, and process development, the original SEC Rivals Checkers idea was developed into a …

Mentoring Management Database, Alexandra Cava, Samantha Kin Jun 2016

Mentoring Management Database, Alexandra Cava, Samantha Kin

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

A new mentoring program is set to begin next year pairing children from Kindergarten through 12th grade with college students as their mentors. Keeping track of the mentor information, mentee information, pairings, stipend disbursements, interview question results, events, and final assessments by hand would be extremely difficult, therefore, a database would be a great asset to the program.

Creating a database in Microsoft Access allows a user to have all this information in one convenient location, therefore, ensuring there is a good user interface is a key component to this project. Using Perach’s "Guide to the Perplexed" as the base …

Modification Of A Draw Bar Type Arena Harrow To Three Point Mounted Type Harrow, Clayton Alan Brown Jun 2014

Modification Of A Draw Bar Type Arena Harrow To Three Point Mounted Type Harrow, Clayton Alan Brown

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This senior project will be the design, and construction of a three point hitch to be attached to a draw bar type spike tooth harrow. Currently used by the Cal Poly Rodeo Team to cultivate their arena before performances, and practices.

The attachment will allow the harrow to be pulled in both directions to create different types of soil affects.

Also the fabrications has a minimal budget so the majority of the materials will be scrap material already in position of the rodeo team or donated to the project.

An Empirical Study On Quality Management Practices, Organization Performance And Suppliers' Selection In Southern Minnesota Manufacturing Firms, Rachel Yetunde-Abiodun Awoku Jan 2012

An Empirical Study On Quality Management Practices, Organization Performance And Suppliers' Selection In Southern Minnesota Manufacturing Firms, Rachel Yetunde-Abiodun Awoku

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Quality management systems (QMS) have been widely applied successfully by many manufacturing companies to improve their process, increase profits and organizational performance. The most applied of the quality programs are ISO 9001, Total Quality Management (TQM), Just-In-time (JIT), Lean Management and Six Sigma. Although past studies on quality management have identified and studied the implementation of quality management practices, there is little or no research on quality management practices and business performance in Southern Minnesota manufacturing companies. Many researchers have concluded that the implementation of quality management practices has led to significant improvements in companies' business performance while others have …

Root Cause Analysis Applied To Transition To Production, Troy Pierson Sep 2010

Root Cause Analysis Applied To Transition To Production, Troy Pierson

Culminating Projects in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

This study examines problems that arise during transition to production of a complex system. It focuses on a single component of the system as a representative of the whole to illustrate how three common production concerns can be addressed: (a) late delivery of the first production part, (b) the ongoing production of non-conforming parts, and ( c) predicting/preventing future interruptions of continuous production. Focusing on the Analysis process of the Six Sigma DMAIC methodology, this study centers on a structured approach to problem solving by applying root cause analysis techniques to identify key causation factors. Results of this study indicate …

An Evaluation Of Attributes And Competencies For Manufacturing Engineering Technology Graduates, Loni S. Williamson Oct 2006

An Evaluation Of Attributes And Competencies For Manufacturing Engineering Technology Graduates, Loni S. Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine the required attributes and competencies required for a graduate from a manufacturing engineering technology baccalaureate program. A document called “Competencies of Manufacturing Engineering Technology Graduates” was compiled in October 2004. This document lists twelve attributes thought to be important for MET graduates: Leadership, Professionalism, Creativity and Problem Solving, Management, Materials, Processes, Quality, Systems, Design, Communication, Safety and Environmental Issues, and Global Awareness. Under each attribute is a list of five to seven competencies creating a total of seventy-three competencies for graduates of an MET baccalaureate program. This list of attributes and competencies …
