Development Of A Compression Test Device For Investigating Interaction Between Diffusion Of Biodiesel And Large Deformation In Rubber, Haseeb Asma
Haseeb ASMA
Motivated by environmental and economic factors, biodiesel has been introduced to partially replace the diminishing stock of petroleum-based fuel. However, the use of biodiesel such as palm biodiesel is placing additional demands on automotive components, e.g. rubber components, due to a compatibility issue in the fuel system. In engineering applications where hostile environments are involved, the long-term mechanical response of rubber components is affected by interactions existed between diffusion of liquids into the material and fluctuating multiaxial loading. Hence, it is crucial to investigate the durability of rubber components in this aggressive environment. A number of studies on static immersion …

Effect Of Different Corrosion Inhibitors On The Corrosion Of Cast Iron In Palm Biodiesel, Haseeb Asma
Haseeb ASMA
Biodiesel is currently in regular use as an alternative fuel over conventional petroleum diesel. However, corrosion of automotive materials is one of the concerns related to biodiesel compatibility issues. In addition, auto-oxidation of biodiesel can also enhance the corrosiveness of biodiesel. The present study aims to investigate inhibition effect of ethylenediamine (EDA), n-butylamine (nBA), tert-butylamine (TBA) against corrosion of cast iron. Static immersion tests in biodiesel in the presence (100 ppm) and absence of different corrosion inhibitors were carried out at room temperature for 1200 hours. At the end of the test, corrosion characteristic was investigated by weight loss measurements …
A Study Of Solder Joint Failure Criteria, Jianbiao Pan, Julie Silk
A Study Of Solder Joint Failure Criteria, Jianbiao Pan, Julie Silk
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
One of the challenges in an experimental study of solder joint reliability is to determine when cracks occur in a solder joint or when a solder joint fails. Cracks in a real solder joint are difficult to identify using an X-Ray system. Cross-sectioning and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a destructive method. A common non-destructive test method is to monitor resistance increase in a solder joint or a daisy-chain. However, no scientific research has been done in establishing the relationship between the crack area of an interconnection and the change in resistance of the interconnection. This paper proposes a method …

Doctoral
The research described here is concerned with improving finite element analysis (FEA) of rubber components subjected to dynamic loading, particularly in respect of accurate modelling of stress softening using standard software codes and phenomenological material models. The research required the design and implementation of a user subroutine capable of inclusion in standard highly nonlinear codes. Experimental methods were employed to corroborate the FEA simulations and so validate the subroutine. This was also achieved using 3D image correlation photogrammetry (ICP) and other novel experimental procedures. From this experimentation and modelling, the results for different rubber specimens and load cases were presented. …

Bio-Inspired Design Of Bipolar Plate Flow Fields For Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, Nannan Guo, Ming-Chuan Leu, Maoliang Wu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The flow field of a bipolar plate distributes hydrogen and oxygen for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells and removes the produced water from the fuel cells. It greatly influences the performance of fuel cells, especially regarding reduction of mass transport loss. Flow fields with good gas distribution and water removal capabilities reduce the mass transport loss, thus allowing higher power density. Inspired by natural structures such as veins in tree leaves and blood vessels in lungs, which efficiently feed nutrition from one central source to large areas and are capable of removing undesirable by-products, a mathematic model has been …

Machine simulation is an effective way of checking additive manufacturing tool paths for both interferences and errors in part produced. This paper presents an algorithm to visually simulate a multi axis additive manufacturing system as it executes a process plan. Simulation results are intended to be used as a verification step before physically producing the part. Verification is particularly important for large builds of expensive materials. The algorithm uses an octree approach to efficiently model the deposition of part geometry and its changes. This paper discusses development of the simulation algorithm, including both the representation of the additive manufacturing machine …

Numerical Simulation Of Ram Extrusion Process For Ceramic Materials, Mingyang Li, Lie Tang, Fei Xue, Robert G. Landers
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The freeze–form extrusion process for aqueous-based ceramic paste is complex due to the non-Newtonian behavior of the paste. In this paper the process is studied numerically using a developed mathematical model. The ceramic paste viscosity is characterized by the Herschel-Bulkley model. The relationship between plunger velocity and extrusion force is computed numerically. The influence of air, which is mixed with the paste during the loading process, is also examined. Due to the compressibility introduced by the trapped air, the plunger force dynamic response is typically dominated by a first order response. It is also shown that the extrusion plunger force …

Effects Of Co Nanoparticle Addition To Sn-3.8ag-0.7cu Solder On Interfacial Structure After Reflow And Ageing, Haseeb Asma
Haseeb ASMA
Effects of Co nanoparticle additions to Sn-3.8Ag-0.7Cu on the structure of solder/copper interface have been studied after reflow and high temperature ageing (150 degrees C, up to 1008 h). Results show that the Co nanoparticles substantially suppress the growth of Cu(3)Sn but enhance Cu(6)Sn(5) growth. Cobalt nanoparticles reduce interdiffusion coefficient in Cu(3)Sn. It is suggested that the Co nanoparticles undergo surface dissolution during reflow and exert their influence, at least partially, through alloying effect. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
