Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar
In this paper we compare two different discharges that can be obtained in a DBD configuration, that is to say the filamentary discharge (usual regime in atmospheric DBD) with the Atmospheric Pressure Townsend Discharge (APTD), which is a homogeneous regime obtained in nitrogen atmosphere. The aim is to help in the understanding of the processes which control the transition from one regime to the other. To do so, the discharge is characterized through electrical measurements, coupled with optical diagnostics among which Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) for radical density measurements. The influence of the addition of small quantities of additives on …

Unsteady Nanoscale Thermal Transport Across A Solid-Fluid Interface, Ganesh Balasubramanian, Soumik Banerjee, Ishwar K. Puri
Unsteady Nanoscale Thermal Transport Across A Solid-Fluid Interface, Ganesh Balasubramanian, Soumik Banerjee, Ishwar K. Puri
Ganesh Balasubramanian
We simulate unsteady nanoscale thermal transport at a solid-fluidinterface by placing cooler liquid-vapor Ar mixtures adjacent to warmer Fe walls. The equilibration of the system towards a uniform overall temperature is investigated using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations from which the heat flux is also determined explicitly. The Ar–Fe intermolecular interactions induce the migration of fluid atoms into quasicrystallineinterfacial layers adjacent to the walls, creating vacancies at the migration sites. This induces temperature discontinuities between the solidlikeinterfaces and their neighboring fluid molecules. The interfacial temperature difference and thus the heat flux decrease as the system equilibrates over time. The averaged interfacial …

Heat Transfer Due To Unsteady Effects As Investigated In A High-Speed, Full-Scale, Fully-Cooled Turbine Vane And Rotor Stage, Jonathan R. Mason
Theses and Dissertations
Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of film cooling on a gas turbine engine’s high‐pressure turbine section. The focus for this effort was in the tip/shroud region of a rotor stage and a high pressure turbine vane. A primary goal was to understand the unsteady flow effects. Attempts were also made to characterize the effects as caused by the fully‐cooled rotor stage. Data for this investigation was taken at the U.S. Air Force’s Turbine Research Facility (TRF), a transient blowdown facility with instrumentation fitted to a full‐scale, high‐speed, fully‐cooled vane and rotor stage of proprietary design. Measurements of pressure, …
The Impact Of Heat Release In Turbine Film Cooling, Dave S. Evans
The Impact Of Heat Release In Turbine Film Cooling, Dave S. Evans
Theses and Dissertations
The Ultra Compact Combustor is a design that integrates a turbine vane into the combustor flow path. Because of the high fuel-to-air ratio and short combustor flow path, a significant potential exists for unburned fuel to enter the turbine. Using contemporary turbine cooling vane designs, the injection of oxygen-rich turbine cooling air into a combustor flow containing unburned fuel could result in heat release in the turbine and a large decrease in cooling effectiveness. The current study explores the interaction of cooling flow from typical cooling holes with the exhaust of a fuel-rich well-stirred-reactor operating at high temperatures over a …
Modeling Of Thermodynamically Coupled Reaction-Transport Systems, Yaşar Demirel
Modeling Of Thermodynamically Coupled Reaction-Transport Systems, Yaşar Demirel
Yaşar Demirel Publications
Nonisothermal reaction-diffusion systems control the behavior of many transport and rate processes in physical, chemical and biological systems, such as pattern formation and chemical pumps. Considerable work has been published on mathematically coupled nonlinear differential equations by neglecting thermodynamic coupling between a chemical reaction and transport processes of mass and heat. This study presents the modeling of thermodynamically coupled system of a simple elementary chemical reaction with molecular heat and mass transport. The thermodynamic coupling refers that a flow occurs without or against its primary thermodynamic driving force, which may be a gradient of temperature or chemical potential or reaction …

Process Study For The Design Of Small-Scale 2 Kelvin Refrigeration Systems, Peter N. Knudsen
Process Study For The Design Of Small-Scale 2 Kelvin Refrigeration Systems, Peter N. Knudsen
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Helium refrigeration at temperatures below 4.5-Kelvin (K), but greater than 0.8-K typically employ a sub-atmospheric process utilizing a vacuum pumping system. These types of helium refrigerators are of keen interest to present and future particle physics programs utilizing super-conducting magnet or radio-frequency technology. As such, there is a need for small scale 2-K helium refrigeration systems (i.e., those that operated below the lambda temperature) in small laboratories and test facilities at this time. This study establishes the key process parameter choices of flow ratio, heat-exchanger size, and supply pressure, and how they influence the overall system performance for various process …

Knowledge-Based Information Resource Management System For Materials Of Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor, Sean Hsieh
Knowledge-Based Information Resource Management System For Materials Of Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor, Sean Hsieh
Reactor Campaign (TRP)
In the development of advanced fast reactors, materials and coolant/material interactions pose a critical barrier for higher temperature and longer core life designs. For advanced burner reactors (sodium cooled) such as EBR-II and FFTF, experience has shown that the qualified structural materials and fuel cladding severely limits the economic performance. In other liquid metal cooled reactor concepts, advanced materials and better understanding and control of coolant and materials interactions are necessary for realizing the potentials.
Liquid sodium has been selected as the primary coolant candidate for Gen. IV nuclear energy systems. Global Nuclear Partnership (GNEP) Advanced Burned Reactor (ABR) has …

Thermal Transient Flow Rate Sensor For High Temperature Liquid Metal Cooled Nuclear Reactor, Yingtao Jiang, Jian Ma
Thermal Transient Flow Rate Sensor For High Temperature Liquid Metal Cooled Nuclear Reactor, Yingtao Jiang, Jian Ma
Reactor Campaign (TRP)
In nuclear power plants and accelerator driven systems (ADS) for nuclear waste treatment, it is important to monitor the coolant flow rate in the reactor core and pipe-line. In such a strong irradiation, high pressure, and temperature environment, the existing flow measurement techniques (such as Electromagnetic flow meters, Ultrasonic flow meters, Turbine flow meters, etc.) are not accurate and reliable.
The measurement of flow rates (mass flow rates or volume flow rate) plays a notable role in monitoring and controlling the experimental conditions. The bulk flow rates can be obtained through direct methods, which measure the amount of discharged fluids …

Modeling And Design Algorithms For Electromagnetic Pumps, Daniel P. Cook, Yitung Chen, Jian Ma
Reactor Campaign (TRP)
Electromagnetic (EM) induction pumps are used extensively in current and proposed nuclear power systems and industrial molten metal transfer operations. Although the Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory that underlies the operation of these types of pumps has been studied extensively in the past few decades, the design of specific EM pumping systems for specific flow cases requires computational tools and expertise, which is lacking in the U.S. However, for the past two years, researchers at UNLV have been utilizing the TC-1 liquid metal loop system at UNLV and an Annular Linear Induction Pump (ALIP) to drive the liquid metal and to develop …

The Role Of Diffusive Transport On Low And Intermediate Temperature Hydrocarbon Oxidation: Closed Reactor Experiments Using Equimolar N-Butane + Oxygen Premixtures At Reduced-Gravity, Howard Pearlman, Michael R. Foster
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
Experiments were conducted in a closed, spherical reactor aboard NASA's KC-135 reduced-gravity aircraft using an equimolar n-C4H10 + 0 2 premixture ( Le = 1.3) at subatmospheric · pressures to compliment model predictions and further explore the reactive-diffusive structure of cool flames and ignitions. The pressure and radial temperature histories were recorded and analyzed for different initial conditions. In addition, the visible light emission from excited formaldehyde was recorded using an intensified video camera and was observed to be radially symmetric in all cases. Unexpectedly, however, the measured temperature distributions during (and after the passage of) the cool flames and …
