Recent impact experiments showed the influence of a strong or weak interface in a bi-layered PMMA material has on dynamic fracture mechanisms. We show that a linear elastic with brittle damage peridynamic model, which works very well for glass, leads to crack propagation speeds significantly faster than those measured experimentally in the PMMA system. We propose an explanation for this behavior: localized heating in the region near the crack tip (due to high strain rates) softens the material sufficiently to make a difference. Conventional snow removal strategies add direct and indirect expenses to the economy through profit lost due to passenger delays costs, pavement durability issues, contaminating the water runoff, and so on. The use of superhydrophobic (super-water-repellent) coating methods is an alternative to conventional snow and ice removal practices for alleviating snow removal operations issues. As an integrated experimental and analytical study, this work focused on optimizing superhydrophobicity and skid resistance of hydrophobic coatings on asphalt concrete surfaces. Horizontal linear shear stress apparatus offers a convenient way to study the rheology of rigid particles suspended in viscous shear flows in the laboratory. The single particle trajectories of a buoyant spherical solid particle in a linear shear flow are investigated. Reynolds numbers less than 0.1 are considered to provide the creeping flow in this investigating. The experimental apparatus provides a linear stress, Stokes, Couette flow where the wall boundary conditions of the set up can change. buildings simulated using eQuest, an energy modeling program. The method is an adjustment of actual energy
usage data using heating degree days (HDD) encoded in the inputted TMY weather file and short-term weather data

     The aim of this investigation is to verify and validate the modeling of fluid mechanics and heat transfer processes in a solar chimney power plant. The modeling uses a finite volume method applied to simulate the fluid flow and solve Navier-Stokes equations for the two- dimensional models of the plant. This note discusses the peridynamic horizon (the nonlocal region around a material point), its role, and practical use in modeling. The objective is to eliminate some misunderstandings and misconceptions regarding the peridynamic horizon. An example of crack branching in a nominally brittle material (homalite) is addressed and we show that crack branching takes place without wave interaction. We explain under what conditions the crack propagation speed depends on the horizon size and the role of incident stress waves on this speed.

We introduce here adaptive refinement algorithms for the non-local method peridynamics, which was proposed (in J. Mech. Phys. Solids 2000; 48:175–209) as a reformulation of classical elasticity for discontinuities and long-range forces. We use scaling of the micromodulus and horizon and discuss the particular features of adaptivity in peridynamics for which multiscale modeling and grid refinement are closely connected. We discuss three types of numerical convergence for peridynamics and obtain uniform convergence to the classical solutions of static and dynamic elasticity problems in 1D in the limit of the horizon going to zero. The peridynamic method is used here to analyse the effect of van der Waals forces on the mechanical behaviour and strength and toughness properties of three-dimensional nanofibre networks under imposed stretch deformation. The peridynamic formulation allows for a natural inclusion of long-range forces (such as van der Waals forces) by considering all interactions as ‘long-range’. We use van der Waals interactions only between different fibres and do not need to model individual atoms. In this paper we discuss the peridynamic analysis of dynamic crack branching in brittle materials and show results of convergence studies under uniform grid refinement (m-convergence) and under decreasing the peridynamic horizon (δ-convergence). Comparisons with experimentally obtained values are made for the crack-tip propagation speed with three different peridynamic horizons.We also analyze the influence of the particular shape of themicro-modulus function and of different materials (Duran 50 glass and soda-lime glass) on the crack propagation behavior. The aim of this investigation is validation and verification of solid particle interaction in a low Reynolds number fluid flows We evaluate the accuracy and reliability of discrete phase element method (DPM) for one/two solid particle interaction in a highly viscous flow in both cylindrical and rectangular Couette flow. The computational results (solution) based on ANSYS/FLUENT 14.0 is validated by experimental data. Unsteady DPM CFD simulations are performed to match the experimental setups. Ubiquitous services running on these devices (i.e. localizing users, routing, security algorithms) will commonly require an accurate location of each device. In order to obtain these locations, existing techniques require either a manual survey, active sound sources, or estimation using wireless radios. These techniques, however, need additional hardware capabilities and are intrusive to the user. This demo presents PANDAA, a zero-configuration automatic spatial localization technique for networked devices based on ambient sound sensing. We will demonstrate that after initial placement of the devices, ambient sounds, such as human speech, music, footsteps, finger snaps, hand claps, or coughs and sneezes, can be used to autonomously resolve the spatial relative arrangement of devices, such as mobile phones, using trigonometric bounds and successive approximation.

In this paper, we describe CoughLoc, a ubiquitous acoustic sensing system for con- tinuous cough detection using a wireless sensor network. Cortina is an energy-efficient indoor localization system, which leverages a wireless sensor network to support navigation and tracking applications. To improve the localization performance, we develop a hybrid ranging system, which incor- porate both RSS and RToF-based techniques. To overcome effects from indoor multipath, we design and implement algorithms to take account various context information. We evaluated the system over a 2000m2 area instrumented with twenty-six fixed nodes. Evaluation results show the system achieved 2.5m accuracy in a pedestrian tracking application.

In this study, the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) is applied to free vibration analysis of beam on elastic foundation. This numerical method is applied on three different axially loaded cases, namely: 1) one end fixed, the other end simply supported; 2) both ends fixed and 3) both ends simply supported cases. Conventional heterogeneous-traffic scheduling schemes utilize zero-delay constraint for real-time services, which aims to minimize the average packet delay among real-time users. However, in light or moderate load networks this strategy is unnecessary and leads to low data throughput for non-real-time users. In this paper, we propose a heuristic scheduling scheme to solve this problem. The scheme measures and assigns scheduling priorities to both real-time and non-real-time users, and schedules the radio resources for the two user classes simultaneously.
