The Girl Scout Wall (GS Wall) project was implemented in two classes at the University of Dayton (UD): a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) course, and a Health and Sports Science (HSS) course, and Sport Facility Management. The MAE course, Introduction to Materials, is a three-credit, third-year required course where students learn about the basic structure and properties of materials as well as the principles of material selection. The Sport Facility Management course is a three-semester hour, required HSS course where students are introduced to the processes of planning, constructing, equipping, maintaining, and managing sport facilities.

Students learn more if they are actively involved in the learning process, particularly in a cooperative manner. Several UMR faculty have operated course-based learning centers (LCs) as part of the campus-wide Learning Enhancement Across Disciplines (LEAD) Program of student learning assistance and enhancement. LCs are designed to assist large numbers of students in a cost- and time-efficient manner that promotes student engagement without requiring undue amounts of faculty time. Course instructors spend time in the open learning environment of the LC, in lieu of office hours, guiding students to master course material and skills in their evolution from novice to …

Railway urban turnout is a special track system used to divert a train from a particular direction or a particular track onto other directions or other tracks. It is a structural grillage system that consists of steel rails, points (or called “switches”), crossings, steel plates, rubber pads, insulators, fasteners, screw spikes, beam bearers (either tim- ber, polymer, steel, or concrete), ballast and formation. There are two types of turnouts, a conventional turnout and a tangential turnout. Standard conventional turnouts are designed typically for straight main line track. Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

Generally, rail squats are defined by the growth of any cracks that have grown longitudinally through the rail subsurface and some of the cracks propagating to the bottom of rails transversely have branched from initial longitudinal cracks with a depression of rail surface. As the crosstie beam in railway track systems, the prestressed concrete sleepers (or railroad ties) are principally designed in order to carry wheel loads from the rails to the ground. Their design takes into account static and dynamic loading conditions. The relatively high turnover of timber sleepers (crossties in a plain track), bearers (skeleton ties in a turnout), and transoms (bridge cross beams) is responsible for producing greenhouse gas emissions 6 times greater than an equivalent reinforced concrete counterparts. This paper presents an innovative solution for the replacement of aging timber transoms installed on existing railway bridges along with the incorporation of a continuous walkway platform, which is proven to provide environmental, safety and financial benefits. Railway networks in Australian alone require replacing a large amount of aging timber components in excess of 280,000 m3 per year. The replacement of timber track components is responsible for producing greenhouse gas emissions 6 times greater than equivalent reinforced concrete counterparts. Sydney Harbour Bridge presently experiences similar problem. A feasibility study to develop an innovative solution for the replacement of aging timber transoms installed on the Sydney Harbour Bridge was conducted to evaluate environmental, safety and financial benefits. Eggshells: A Novel Bio-Filler For Intumescent Flame-Retardant Coatings

The aim of this study was to develop intumescent flame-retardant coatings that incorporate chicken eggshell (CES) waste as a novel eco-friendly bio-filler. Three flame-retardant additives, namely, ammonium polyphosphate phase II, pentaerythritol and melamine were mixed with flame-retardant fillers and acrylic binder to synthesize the intumescent coatings. The fire performance of the coatings was evaluated in accordance with 'BS 476: Part 6-Fire Propagation' and 'BS 476: Part 7-Surface Spread of Flame' test standards. It was found that 4 out of 5 of the coated specimens (B, C, D and E) neither showed surface spread of flame nor any afterglow combustion upon …

Experimental modal analysis was performed on RC beams with honeycombs. The mode shapes were extracted, and the eigenvectors were used in determining the mode shape equations using nonlinear regression. The equation used in the regression was the generalized solution of transverse vibration of a Bernoulli-Euler prismatic beam. By utilizing the regressed phase variable, the global flexural stiffness was evaluated. It was observed that the global stiffness dropped with increasing volumes of the honeycombs in the beam. Tsunamis pose a great threat to coastal infrastructures. Bridges without adequate provisions for earthquake and tsunami loading generally are vulnerable when a tsunami occurs. During the last two disastrous tsunami events (i.e., the tsunami in the Indian Ocean and the tsunami that struck Japan), many bridges were damaged by the waves created by the tsunamis. Therefore to realize the mentioned design, an anthropometric database for Malaysian elderly population need to be developed. A total of 107 participants took part in the study which involved 61 females and 46 males with ages ranging between 55 and 70 years. An earlier anthropometric database for Malaysian elderly population has been developed. Sixty body dimensions were measured in the study. Influences Of Flame-Retardant Fillers On Fire Protection And Mechanical Properties Of Intumescent Coatings

A combination of acrylic binder and flame-retardant ingredients was used to synthesize the solvent-borne intumescent coatings designed for steel substrates. The influences of individual and various combinations of flame-retardant fillers on the fire protection and mechanical properties of the coatings were characterized by using Bunsen burner, thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index, field emission scanning electron microscopy, freeze thaw cycles, static immersion and pull-off type equipment. It was found that the combination of aluminium hydroxide (Al(OH)(3)) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) has significantly improved the fire protection, thermal stability and water resistance of the coating. Statistically, the actual loading conditions for railway tracks are rather dynamic and transient. The dynamic loadings due to train and track interactions redistribute from the rails to the rail pad, from the rail pad to the railway sleeper, and from the railway sleeper to the underlying ground. Commonly, railway sleeper in track systems is modeled as a beam on elastic foundation. Accelerated deterioration of railway bridge approaches often induces downtime or restricted railway operation; and importantly causes more frequent maintenance, which is costly and time-consuming. Such deterioration is believed to occur because of high dynamic impact loading from: the difference of stiffness between the railway track and the bridge; and the poor condition of the track support at the bridge ends. The abrupt change in track stiffness often causes accelerated degradation of the track geometry and components and poor ride quality, demanding higher maintenance.
