Consuming Digital Debris In The Plasticene, Stephen R. Parks
Theses and Dissertations
Claims of customization and control by socio-technical industries are altering the role of consumer and producer. These narratives are often misleading attempts to engage consumers with new forms of technology. By addressing capitalist intent, material, and the reproduction limits of 3-D printed objects’, I observe the aspirational promise of becoming a producer of my own belongings through new networks of production. I am interested in gaining a better understanding of the data consumed that perpetuates hyper-consumptive tendencies for new technological apparatuses. My role as a designer focuses on the resolution of not only the surface of the object through 3-D …

ABSTRACT
IMPACT LOCATION IN AN ISOTROPIC PLATE WITHOUT TRAINING

Under the Supervision of Professor Dr. Nathan Salowitz
Unexpected impacts are major concerns in the aerospace industry that can cause difficulty to detect damage. Techniques have been developed to determine the impact location using piezoelectric sensors. Most existing systems require training data to develop a database of known structural responses and properties that can be referenced for location of impacts. This data collection is time consuming and if an impact and corresponding sensor data is outside the range of training data, the system …
Numerical And Experimental Studies Of Atomic Layer Deposition For Sustainability Improvement, Dongqing Pan
Numerical And Experimental Studies Of Atomic Layer Deposition For Sustainability Improvement, Dongqing Pan
Theses and Dissertations
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is an approved nano-scale thin films fabrication technique with remarkable uniformity and conformity in surface geometry. This dissertation presents numerical and experimental studies to investigate the transient physical and chemical ALD process in order to improve its sustainability performance in terms of throughput, wastes and emissions.
To be specific, in this dissertation, the transient process of ALD is studied extensively through both numerical and experimental approaches to find the influential factors on the two main critical sustainability issues: low throughput and negative environmental impacts. Different numerical schemes are developed and studied for ALD process simulations. In …
Objective Test Methods For Waveguide Audio Synthesis, Steven Gregory Wood
Objective Test Methods For Waveguide Audio Synthesis, Steven Gregory Wood
Theses and Dissertations
Acoustic Physical Modeling has emerged as a newer musical synthesis technique. The most common form of physical modeling synthesis in both industry and academia is digital waveguide synthesis. Commercially available for the past thirteen years, the top synthesizer manufacturers have chosen to include physical modeling synthesis in their top of the line models. In the area of audio quality testing, the most common tests have traditionally been group listening tests. While these tests are subjective and can be expensive and time-consuming, the results are validated by the groups' proper quality standards. Research has been conducted to evaluate objective testing procedures …
