Additive manufacturing (AM) is becoming a robust production technology for aerospace, healthcare, and construction industries among others. Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is one of the methods most used to 3D print products. FDM has limitation due to interlayer adhesion and restriction imposed by the printing direction. Specially with AM composites, as reinforced nylon PA6 with short fibers, parts show more strength along the direction of the filament due to the alignment of the carbon fibers, but weaker in other directions. The employment of additive manufacturing in the non-standard environments like space, ships, or submarines has the potential to be an advanced utility not only in the pre-flight production of aerospace components and structures, but also for the onboard manufacturing of components and tools necessary for future space missions. The aim of this work is to study the effect of post-processing on additive manufactured (AM) continuous carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) performance. As-printed AM CFRPs do not perform as well as conventionally manufactured CFRPs with the same composition. Possible improvements to AM CFRP performance include annealing and applying uniaxial pressure with elevated temperature. Samples were subjected to pressure and temperature treatments and annealing at a constant temperature. Treated materials were subjected to three-point bending tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterize and assess sample performance. Two Compact Jet Engine Simulator (CJES) units were designed for integrated wind tunnel acoustic experiments involving a Hybrid Wing Body (HWB) vehicle. To meet the 5.8% scale of the HWB model, Ultra Compact Combustor technology from the Air Force Research Laboratory was used. The CJES units were built and integrated with a control system in the NASA Langley Low Speed Aero acoustic Wind Tunnel. The combustor liners, plug—vane and flow conditioner components were built in-house at Langley Research Center.
