Novel Piezo Actuators For Surface Cleaning, Yezad H. Anklesaria
Doctoral Dissertations
"Optical cameras are becoming increasingly common and are used in a variety of applications. With recent progress and transition toward more autonomous systems, the usage of optical systems will be common and widespread. Applications of the optical systems range from autonomous vehicles, home security systems, aviation, extraterrestrial vehicles, spacecraft, and satellites. Imaging systems are used in decision-making in many of these applications. Fouling of the field of view of the imaging system can impede the decision process. An active autonomous cleaning method for the optical surface of the optical systems reliably would be advantageous. The research work focuses on developing …
Theoretical Study Of Magnetic Particles In A Shear Flow Subjected To A Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki
Theoretical Study Of Magnetic Particles In A Shear Flow Subjected To A Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki
Doctoral Dissertations
"Magnetic manipulation of non-spherical magnetic microparticles is important for applications in shape-based and magnetic-based separations such as waste management, disease diagnostics, drug delivery, and mining. Manipulations of magnetic microparticles also include chain formation to assemble compositions for electronics, drug loading designs, and magnetorheological fluids for smart armor, hydraulic brakes, and dampers. In microfluidic devices, separation-formation-effectiveness depends on the shape of the channel, the shear rate, and the magnetic field strength and direction.
Particle separation and chain formation involved highly complex and computational expense-demanding studies in microfluidic devices, magnetic fields, and particle- particle/wall interactions. This research took complex experimental studies and …
Dynamic Behavior And Interactions Of Ferrofluid Droplets Under Magnetic Fields In Low Reynolds Number Flows, Md Rifat Hassan
Dynamic Behavior And Interactions Of Ferrofluid Droplets Under Magnetic Fields In Low Reynolds Number Flows, Md Rifat Hassan
Doctoral Dissertations
Digital microfluidics in combination with emulsion microfluidics are crucial building blocks of droplet-based microfluidics, which are prevalent in a wide variety of industrial and biomedical applications, including polymer processing, food production, drug delivery, inkjet printing, and cell-based assays. Therefore, understanding the dynamics and interactions of droplets as well as the interactions between the droplets and solid surfaces are of great importance in order to improve the performance or product in these applications.
Recently, several studies in the literature have demonstrated the potential of magnetic fields in controlling the behavior of droplets in microscale; however, the fundamental mechanism behind the interesting …
Finite Time Suboptimal Control Design Of Nonlinear Systems With Θ-D Technique And Implementation To Aerospace Applications, Jie Yao
Doctoral Dissertations
“A finite time suboptimal control strategy (named θ - D approximated algorithm) was proposed in this study, which can provide the control engineers with a novel effective and efficient design tool from the finite time optimal perspective. Based on the framework of this proposed method, the original nonlinear dynamics were formulated in pseudo-linear form, and the performance index was denoted by a linear quadratic regulator prototype in this research. After that, the approximated solutions to intractable Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation were acquired by putting vanishing perturbation terms into the performance index. By tuning the parameters in perturbation terms, semi-global stability and …
Magnetic Control Of Transport Of Particles And Droplets In Low Reynolds Number Shear Flows, Jie Zhang
Magnetic Control Of Transport Of Particles And Droplets In Low Reynolds Number Shear Flows, Jie Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
“Magnetic particles and droplets have been used in a wide range applications including biomedicine, biological analysis and chemical reaction. The manipulation of magnetic microparticles or microdroplets in microscale fluid environments is one of the most critical processes in the systems and platforms based on microfluidic technology. The conventional methods are based on magnetic forces to manipulate magnetic particles or droplets in a viscous fluid.
In contrast to conventional magnetic separation method, several recent experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated a different way to manipulate magnetic non-spherical particles by using a uniform magnetic field in the microchannel. However, the fundamental mechanism …
Fabrication And Characterization Of Multifunctional Composites, Aditya R. Thakur
Fabrication And Characterization Of Multifunctional Composites, Aditya R. Thakur
Doctoral Dissertations
“This study details the research to facilitate fabrication and characterization of novel structural composites reinforced with carbon fibers. Across industries, materials with high performance-to-weight ratio are sought after. Using carbon fibers as secondary phases in these proposed composites, specific characteristics can be tailored in these materials to manufacture strong, lightweight, high performance structures. The first part of the research focused on the improvement in the mechanical properties of the composites using carbon fiber reinforcement. As a part of this study, toughened ceramic composites with predictable failure patterns were produced using carbon fiber inclusions. A closed-form analytical model was developed to …
Investigation Of Robust Optimization And Evidence Theory With Stochastic Expansions For Aerospace Applications Under Mixed Uncertainty, Harsheel R. Shah
Investigation Of Robust Optimization And Evidence Theory With Stochastic Expansions For Aerospace Applications Under Mixed Uncertainty, Harsheel R. Shah
Doctoral Dissertations
One of the primary objectives of this research is to develop a method to model and propagate mixed (aleatory and epistemic) uncertainty in aerospace simulations using DSTE. In order to avoid excessive computational cost associated with large scale applications and the evaluation of Dempster Shafer structures, stochastic expansions are implemented for efficient UQ. The mixed UQ with DSTE approach was demonstrated on an analytical example and high fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of transonic flow over a RAE 2822 airfoil.
Another objective is to devise a DSTE based performance assessment framework through the use of quantification of margins and …
Dynamic Ergonomic Analysis And Simulation Of Fastening Operation, Akul Joshi
Dynamic Ergonomic Analysis And Simulation Of Fastening Operation, Akul Joshi
Doctoral Dissertations
"Operator performing fastening operation with powered hand-tools at awkward postures is subjected to external forces that may pose a risk of developing ergonomic injuries. For design of safe workplaces and selection of tools it is necessary to identify the probable causes of discomfort by simulating the work conditions and quantifying the risk factors. An ergonomic simulator is developed to simulate the fastening operation and quantify the effects of posture and force in fastening operation. The effect of dynamic forces is analyzed using two approaches. The first approach analyzes the effect of tool vibration while the second analyzes the hand-arm system …
