Effective Magnetic And Electric Response Of Composite Materials, Mona Hassan Alsaleh Nov 2018

Effective Magnetic And Electric Response Of Composite Materials, Mona Hassan Alsaleh

Doctoral Dissertations

Metamaterials (MMs) are nanocomposite materials consisting of metal-dielectric resonators much smaller in size than the wavelength of the incident light. Common examples of metamaterials are based on split ring resonators (SRRs), parallel wires or strips and fishnet structures. These types of materials are designed and fabricated in order to provide unique optical responses to the incident electromagnetic radiation that are not available in naturally existing materials. The MMs can exhibit unusual properties such as strong magnetism at terahertz (THz) and optical frequencies. Additionally, negative index materials (NIMs) can provide negative index of refraction which can be used in many applications …

Electrical Characterization Of Graphene And Nanodiamond Nanostructures, A Z M Nowzesh Hasan

Doctoral Dissertations

The electrical characterization on two-dimensional carbon-based graphene and nanodiamond materials was performed to improve charge transport properties for the label-free electrical biosensors. The charge transport in solution-gated graphene devices is affected by the impurities and disorders of the underlying dielectric interface and its interaction with the electrolytes. Advancement in field-effect ion sensing by introducing a dielectric isomorph, hexagonal boron nitride between graphene and silicon dioxide of a solution-gated graphene field-effect transistor was investigated. Increased transconductance due to increased charge carrier mobility is accompanied with larger ionic sensitivity. These findings define a standard to construct future graphene devices for biosensing and …

Nanoparticle Catalytic Enhancement Of Carbon Dioxide Reforming Of Methane For Hydrogen Production, Nicholas Groden Nov 2018

Nanoparticle Catalytic Enhancement Of Carbon Dioxide Reforming Of Methane For Hydrogen Production, Nicholas Groden

Doctoral Dissertations

The U.S. produces 5559.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, of which 21% is produced by industrial processes. Steam reforming, an industrial process that accounts for 95% of all hydrogen production in industry, produces 134.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide or around 11% of the total carbon dioxide produced by industry. This carbon dioxide is then either emitted or goes through a sequestration process that accounts for 75% of the plant's operational costs. An alternative reaction to steam reforming is dry reforming, which utilizes carbon dioxide rather than emitting it and can be used in conjunction with current …

Fabrication Of High Refractive Index, Periodic, Composite Nanostructures For Photonic And Sensing Applications, Irene Howell

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines methods of fabricating high refractive index, periodic structures and their applications. Structures with a refractive index periodicity in one-dimensionally are fabricated by stacking layers of (high-refractive index) nanoparticle-filled and unfilled layers. More complex two- and three-dimensional structures are fabricated by direct printing of nanoparticles via solvent-assisted soft nanoimprint lithography. Polymer-nanoparticle composites are an active area of research and development especially for photonic applications. We show use of two composite formulations, first for fabrication of one-dimensional photonic crystals, and second for scalable UV-nanoimprinting. One dimensional photonic crystals, which possess a periodicity in refractive index, result in a constructive …

Swelling Induced Deformation Of Thermally Responsive Hydrogels, Ying Zhou

Doctoral Dissertations

Hydrogels are crosslinked polymeric networks imbibed with aqueous solutions. They undertake dramatic volume changes through swelling and deswelling processes, which can be stimulated by factors like temperature, pH or different chemicals. These unique properties render hydrogels particularly interesting for shape morphing related applications. In this thesis, we focus on the swelling induced deformation of thermally responsive hydrogels with lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs), including poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEAm). Particularly, benzophenone containing monomers are copolymerized with NIPAm or DEAm to create photocrosslinkable temperature-responsive polymers, which allows fabrication of hydrogels with controlled shapes and crosslinking …

Extreme Indentation And Fracture Of Soft Polymer Gels, Shruti Rattan Oct 2018

Extreme Indentation And Fracture Of Soft Polymer Gels, Shruti Rattan

Doctoral Dissertations

The mechanical properties of conventional hard materials, such as metals and ceramics, have received widespread attention in the past several decades; however mechanical characterization, failure in particular, of soft materials, such as polymer gels, elastomers, and biological tissues and organs, has largely been ignored. While practical issues such as difficulty in handling, processing, and slippage offer complexities in characterization, the breakdown of the fundamental assumptions of linear elastic fracture mechanics due to large strains prior to failure, significant energy dissipation ahead of a crack tip and rate and time dependent effects makes understanding of failure in soft materials even more …

Parallel Algorithms For Time Dependent Density Functional Theory In Real-Space And Real-Time, James Kestyn Oct 2018

Parallel Algorithms For Time Dependent Density Functional Theory In Real-Space And Real-Time, James Kestyn

Doctoral Dissertations

Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) have had great success solving for ground state and excited states properties of molecules, solids and nanostructures. However, these problems are particularly hard to scale. Both the size of the discrete system and the number of needed eigenstates increase with the number of electrons. A complete parallel framework for DFT and TDDFT calculations applied to molecules and nanostructures is presented in this dissertation. This includes the development of custom numerical algorithms for eigenvalue problems and linear systems. New functionality in the FEAST eigenvalue solver presents an additional level of …

Self-Assembling Networks In Soft Materials, Ishan Prasad

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a study on heterogeneous network structure in two distinct classes of soft material systems: disordered assemblies of jammed binary spheres and ordered morphologies of block copolymer melts. The aim is to investigate the combined role of geometry and entropy in structure formation of soft matter assemblies. First, we investigate the influence of particle size asymmetry on structural properties of jammed binary sphere mixtures. We give evidence of two distinct classes of materials separated by a critical size ratio that marks the onset of a sharp transition due to simultaneous jamming of a sub-component of the packing. We …

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr Jan 2018

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr

Doctoral Dissertations

"Recent efforts have demonstrated confinement in porous scaffolds at the nanoscale can alter the hydrogen sorption properties of metal hydrides, though not to an extent feasible for use in onboard hydrogen storage applications, proposing the need for a method allowing further modifications. The work presented here explores how the functionalization of nanoporous carbon scaffold surfaces with heteroatoms can modify the hydrogen sorption properties of confined metal hydrides in relation to non-functionalized scaffolds (FS). Investigations of nanoconfined LiBH4 and NaAlH4 indicate functionalizing the carbon scaffold surface with nitrogen can shift the activation energy of hydrogen desorption in excess of …

In contrast, out-of-autoclave manufacturing, specifically vacuum-bag-only prepreg process, is capable of producing low cost and high performance composites. In the current study, out-of-autoclave processing of high temperature carbon/bismaleimide composites was evaluated. The cure and process parameters were optimized. The properties of out-of-autoclave cured laminates compared …

Chemistry, Design, And Processing Of Two-Stage Trip Steel, Daniel M. Field Jan 2018

Chemistry, Design, And Processing Of Two-Stage Trip Steel, Daniel M. Field

Doctoral Dissertations

"A regular solution model was developed to calculate the chemical driving force for α-martensite formation, ΔGλ→ αChem. A model for the strain energy, ΔGλ→αstr, was formulated utilizing the Young’s modulus (E), lattice misfit squared (δ²), and molar volume (Ω) which opposed the chemical driving force for α-martensite formation. The MαS was determined at a temperature at which ΔGλ→αChem + ΔGλ→αstr = 0. In conjunction with a previously developed ε-martensite model, a means of predicting the volume fraction of λ-austenite was determined; and it was shown that for values …
