"The metallographic knowledge of copper mattes or mattes in general for that matter, although extensive, is, to put it mildly, rather diversified. One authority, for instance, believes that mattes are sulphide dissolving compounds there being no eutectiferous series involved. Another believes that the matte constituents enter into a eutectiferous series, compounds being present. Still a third contends that there are no compounds formed but that a simple eutectiferous range exists between certain limits outside of which the end members of the series form solid solutions with each other.
