Ajit Behera

Fly-ash produced from iron & steel industries contains rich amount of metal oxides which gives a tremendous potential as a coating material on structural components. This demand leads to develop and characterize different type of fly ash composite coatings by using plasma spray technique. Plasma spray technology has the advantage of being able to process various low-grade ore minerals to obtain value-added products and also to deposit metals, ceramics and a combination of these, generating approximately homogeneous coatings with the desired microstructure. In the present investigation, coatings are developed on copper substrates using fly-ash+ quartz+ illmenite composite (in a weight …

A Novel Material Used In Automotive Industry: Compacted Graphite Iron, Ajit Behera

Ajit Behera

In recent decades, materials have been a key to increase the performance of automotive parts which leads to development of new materials. The main objective is to achieve increase in quantity and quality of automotive parts produced with optimum performance during their life cycle. Cast iron has remained a competitive material due, in part, to its low production cost. In fact, among the cast iron group, one of the alternatives is lightweight alloys, that is, compacted graphite iron (CGI). Nowadays, it is accepted that CGI can effectively reduce the total weight of an automobile by virtue of its high strength- …

Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMA) are a new class of potential multifunctional materials with advancement over the conventional heat-driven shape memory alloys due to their exceptional properties. FSMAs can be controlled by magnetic field have attracted considerable attention as a type of magnetic actuator materials. Among the Heusler alloys that exhibit magnetic shape memory effect, the most extensively studied are those of the Ni-Mn-Ga system. However, to overcome some of the problems related to practical application, such as the high cost of gallium and the low martensitic transformation temperature that they usually present, the search for Ga-free alloys has been …

Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) are the interesting materials exhibiting shape memory effect and magnetism simultaneously. They show magnetic field-induced strains at room temperature greater than any magnetostrictive, piezoelectric or electrostrictive material, and faster frequency response than temperature driven shape memory alloys. Among various FSMA materials, Ni-Mn-X (X =Ga, In, Sn, Sb) have gained considerable interest due to their multifunctional properties such as shape memory effect, magnetocaloric effect, magnetoresistance, etc., associated with first order martensite to austenite structural transition. FSMA spread its application in broad area from aerospace industry to medical application, but not vividly use; because of its high …

Cryogenic Technique For Processing Steel Treatment, Ajit Behera

Ajit Behera

Cryogenics or deep freezing have been around for quite some time. There is documented research from as far back as the 1930’s where German companies used it on components of jumbo aircraft engines. Cryogenic processing had its US origins in the 1940s. Cold treatments or sub zero treatments are done to make sure there is no retained austenite during quenching. Cryogenics is a relatively new process and to eliminate retained austenite, the temperature has to be lowered, but one that using correct procedures can bring substantial economic benefits. In cryogenic treatment the material is to be deep freeze temperatures of …

Ajit Behera

The conventional materials are nowadays not sufficient to cater to the variety of uses and exposure to various environments that may take place while they are put into use. Hence this leads to the development of composites, which nearly suffice the above two conditions. Composite material is a material composed of two or more distinct phases (matrix phase and reinforcing phase) and having bulk properties significantly different from those of any of the constituents. In this developing age for iron industry there is large demand for spherodial Graphite iron (S.G. Iron). S.G. Iron also known as a composite in which …
