Influence Of The Temperature On Flow-Induced Crystallization Of Isotactic Polypropylene And Propylene-Ethylene Random Copolymer, Hugo Boitout

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

When flow is applied on a semi-crystalline polymer melt, it can greatly impact how it crystallizes its final properties. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the basic mechanism of flow induced crystallization (FIC). Only then will it be possible to predict final properties from the type of resin and processing conditions. Polypropylene is one of the most widely used polymers. Its processing generally involves subjecting the melt to intense flow fields, so FIC commonly occurs.

This study investigates the influence of temperature of shear and crystallization on the FIC behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Temperature is one of the main …

An Investigation On Biocompatibility Of Bio-Absorbable Polymer Coated Magnesium Alloys, Sushma Amruthaluri Nov 2014

An Investigation On Biocompatibility Of Bio-Absorbable Polymer Coated Magnesium Alloys, Sushma Amruthaluri

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Advances in biomaterials have enabled medical practitioners to replace diseased body parts or to assist in the healing process. In situations where a permanent biomaterial implant is used for a temporary application, additional surgeries are required to remove these implants once the healing process is complete, which increases medical costs and patient morbidity. Bio-absorbable materials dissolve and are metabolized by the body after the healing process is complete thereby negating additional surgeries for removal of implants.

Magnesium alloys as novel bio-absorbable biomaterials, have attracted great attention recently because of their good mechanical properties, biocompatibility and corrosion rate in physiological environments. …

Slow Release Of Ions From Internalized Silver Nanoparticles Modifies The Epidermal Growth Factor Signaling Response, Kristen K. Comfort, Elizabeth I. Maurer, Saber M. Hussain

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Due to their distinctive physiochemical properties, including a robust antibacterial activity and plasmonic capability, hundreds of consumer and medical products contain colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). However, even at sub-toxic dosages, AgNPs are able to disrupt cell functionality, through a yet unknown mechanism. Moreover, internalized AgNPs have the potential to prolong this disruption, even after the removal of excess particles. In the present study, we evaluated the impact, mechanism of action, and continual effects of 50 nm AgNP exposure on epidermal growth factor (EGF) signal transduction within a human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell line. After AgNP expose, EGF signaling was initially obstructed …

Growth And Properties Of Carbon Microcoils And Nanocoils, Muneaki Hikita, Robyn Bradford, Khalid Lafdi

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Various types of coiled carbon filaments have been synthesized using chemical vapor deposition and other methods. These carbon filaments exhibit unique electrical and mechanical properties due to their versatile shapes and structures. To form coiled shapes, different types of catalyst compositions and reactive gases have been explored. Generally, coiled carbon filaments are classified by coil diameter and shape (e.g., microcoil and nanocoil). In this review, coiled carbon filaments are classified into three growth mechanism categories:

(1) bidirectional double helical growth;

(2) bidirectional twisted growth; and

(3) tip single helical or twisted growth.

Next, their synthesis methods and hypothetical growth mechanisms …

Photo-Sensitivity Of Large Area Physical Vapor Deposited Mono And Bilayer Mos2, Baoming Wang, Christopher Muratore, Andrey A. Voevodin, M. Amanul Haque Aug 2014

Photo-Sensitivity Of Large Area Physical Vapor Deposited Mono And Bilayer Mos2, Baoming Wang, Christopher Muratore, Andrey A. Voevodin, M. Amanul Haque

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

We present photosensitivity in large area physical vapour deposited mono and bi-layer MoS2 films. Photo-voltaic effect was observed in single layer MoS2 without any apparent rectifying junctions, making device fabrication straightforward. For bi-layers, no such effect was present, suggesting strong size effect in light-matter interaction. The photo-voltaic effect was observed to highly direction dependent in the film plane, which suggests that the oblique deposition configuration plays a key role in developing the rectifying potential gradient. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of any large area and transfer free MoS2 photo device with performance comparable to …

A Soft Condensed Matter Approach Towards Mathematical Modelling Of Mass Transport And Swelling In Food Grains, Michael Chapwanya, N. Misra Aug 2014

A Soft Condensed Matter Approach Towards Mathematical Modelling Of Mass Transport And Swelling In Food Grains, Michael Chapwanya, N. Misra

Articles

Soft condensed matter (SCM) physics has recently gained importance for a large class of engineering materials. The treatment of food materials from a soft matter perspective, however, is only at the surface and is gaining importance for understanding the complex phenomena and structure of foods. In this work, we present a theoretical treatment of navy beans from a SCM perspective to describe the hydration kinetics. We solve the transport equations within a porous matrix and employ the Flory–Huggin’s equation for polymer–solvent mixture to balance the osmotic pressure. The swelling of the legume seed is modelled as a moving boundary with …

Optimizing Polymer Fluorescence For Explosives Detection, Rose K. Cersonsky May 2014

Optimizing Polymer Fluorescence For Explosives Detection, Rose K. Cersonsky

Honors Scholar Theses

Pyrene is commonly used for explosives detection, as when mixed with polystyrene, the fluorescence intensity of the resulting film can be used as an indicator of the presence of nitro-aromatic, nitro-ether, or nitro-amine explosives. Previous studieshave tested a three-component system including pyrene, polystyrene, and a salt, tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAHP). From these previous studies, it has been seen that vapor pressure of the preparation area is a governing factor in the formation of excimers, which are instrumental in achieving and maintaining fluorescence intensity. In this study, three parameters – solution concentration, film thickness, and molecular weight of polystyrene are examined to …

Effects Of Sodium Hydroxide Pretreatment On Structural Components Of Biomass, Alicia A. Modenbach, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Pretreatment is a unit operation in the conversion of biomass to valuable products that utilizes various combinations of conditions, including chemicals, heat, pressure, and time, to reduce the recalcitrance of lignocellulose. Many such pretreatments have been developed over the years, as the operating conditions can be adapted so that lignocellulose is modified in ways unique to each pretreatment. By tailoring pretreatment conditions to achieve these modifications, the types of final products produced can be controlled. The purpose of this review is to provide a consolidated source of information for sodium hydroxide effects on lignocellulose. The structural characteristics of lignocellulose and …

Optical Properties Of Carbon Microcoils, Muneaki Hikita, Li Cao, Khalid Lafdi Jan 2014

Optical Properties Of Carbon Microcoils, Muneaki Hikita, Li Cao, Khalid Lafdi

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Carbon microcoils (CMCs) have emerged as versatile material artifacts for a variety of applications due to their helical and spiral structures. Embedded in matrix, CMCs have already been demonstrated for their potential tactile/proximity sensor application. In this study, CMCs were prepared using a conventional chemical vapor deposition method, and then were functionalized with octadecylamine.

Upon photoexcitation, the functionalized CMCs exhibited photoluminescence in the visible region, which has never been found before. Similar to carbon based nanoparticles, the photoluminescence of CMCs was attributed to electron-hole radiative recombination after surface passivation. The results suggested that this kind of fluorescent functionalized CMCs might …

Domain Engineering Of Physical Vapor Deposited Two-Dimensional Materials, Tarek Alam, Baoming Wang, Raghu Pulavarthy, M. Amanul Haque, Christopher Muratore, Nicholas R. Glavin, Ajit K. Roy, Andrey A. Voevodin

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Physical vapor deposited two-dimensional (2D) materials span larger areas compared to exfoliated flakes, but suffer from very small grain or domain sizes. In this letter, we fabricate freestanding molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and amorphous boron nitride (BN) specimens to expose both surfaces. We performed in situ heating in a transmission electron microscope to observe the domain restructuring in real time. The freestanding MoS2 specimens showed up to 100× increase in domain size, while the amorphous BN transformed in to polycrystalline hexagonal BN (h-BN) at temperatures around 600 °C much lower than the 850–1000 °C range cited in the literature.

Uniform growth of pristine two dimensional (2D) materials over large areas at lower temperatures without sacrifice of their unique physical properties is a critical pre-requisite for seamless integration of next-generation van der Waals heterostructures into functional devices. This Letter describes a vapor phasegrowth technique for precisely controlled synthesis of continuous, uniform molecular layers of MoS2 on silicon dioxide and highly oriented pyrolitic graphite substrates of over several square centimeters at 350 °C. Synthesis of few-layer MoS2 in this ultra-high vacuum physical vapor deposition process yieldsmaterials with key optical and electronic properties identical to exfoliated layers. The films are composed of …

Fatigue Life Prediction Of Magnetorheological Elastomers Subjected To Dynamic Equi-Biaxial Cyclic Loadin, Yanfen Zhou, Stephen Jerrams, Tony Betts, Lin Chen

Articles

Prediction of fatigue life is of great significance in ensuring that dynamically loaded rubber components exhibit safety and reliability in service. In this text, the dynamic equi-biaxial fatigue behaviour of magnetorheological elastomer (MREs) using a bubble inflation method is described. Wöhler (S-N) curves for both isotropic and anisotropic MREs were produced by subjecting the compounds to cycling over a range of stress amplitudes (σa) between 0.75 MPa and 1.4 MPa. Changes in physical properties, including variation in stress-strain relations and complex modulus (E*) during the fatigue process were analysed. It was found that the complex modulus of MRE …

Less Is More: Long-Term In Vitro Exposure To Low Levels Of Silver Nanoparticles Provides New Insights For Nanomaterial Evaluation, Kristen K. Comfort, Laura K. Braydich-Stolle, Elizabeth I. Maurer, Saber M. Hussain

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

In view of the vast number of new nanomaterials (NMs) that require testing and the constraints associated with animal models, the majority of studies to elucidate nanotoxicological effects have occurred in vitro, with limited correlation and applicability to in vivo systems and realistic, occupational exposure scenarios.

In this study, we developed and implemented a chronic in vitromodel coupled with lower, regulatory dosages in order to provide a more realistic assessment of NM-dependent consequences and illuminate the implications of long-term NM exposure. When keratinocytes were exposed to 50 nm silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), we determined that chronically dosed cells operated …
