Applicability Of Using Bio-Receptive Concrete For Building Facades In Egypt, Gina Roupheil Feb 2024

Applicability Of Using Bio-Receptive Concrete For Building Facades In Egypt, Gina Roupheil

Theses and Dissertations

The significant increase in carbon dioxide emissions caused by the construction industry is detrimental to our planet. This is rapidly increasing with the urbanization of cities that is gradually taking its toll on the available green spaces, which help in balancing such emissions. Recently, researchers have been trying to make use of bio-receptivity to create biomaterial systems that could be spread on building envelopes and support the growth of small plant species and microorganisms to establish on. Out of those materials, comes the concrete as a promising material for bio-colonization.

Within this context, this study aims at investigating the applicability …

Accurate Evaluation Of The Direction-Dependent Mechanical Properties Of Ideal Single Crystals: A Comparative Ab Initio Study, Jaylan Ali Elhalawani Feb 2023

Accurate Evaluation Of The Direction-Dependent Mechanical Properties Of Ideal Single Crystals: A Comparative Ab Initio Study, Jaylan Ali Elhalawani

Theses and Dissertations

The mechanical properties of a single crystal or a grain in a polycrystalline material are highly dependent on the direction of the applied load. Key properties of interest are the Young’s modulus and the Poisson ratio in the small strain limit, and the ideal tensile strength in the large strain regime. Prior atomistic computations of these properties interchangeably used two approaches. In one approach the stress-strain response is explicitly calculated via a numerical tensile test experiment. In the second approach the second order single crystal elastic constants are computed via small deformations and then used in analytical equations to derive …

Design And Fabrication Of Nanostructured Electrodes For Complementary Electrochemical And Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting, Kholoud El Sayed Abousalem Jan 2022

Design And Fabrication Of Nanostructured Electrodes For Complementary Electrochemical And Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting, Kholoud El Sayed Abousalem

Theses and Dissertations

Designing highly active, durable, and nonprecious electrodes for overall water splitting is of urgent scientific importance to realize sustainable hydrogen production. Accordingly, the need to search efficient energy production systems is of crucial necessity. In this thesis, two various systems for sustainable hydrogen production have been reported using electrochemical and photoelectrochemical pathways. In the first part of the thesis, electrochemical water splitting involving both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been established. To this end, an innovative approach is demonstrated to synthesize flower-like 3D homogenous trimetallic Mn, Ni, Co phosphide catalysts directly on nickel foam via …
