Assessing Tsunami Awareness In Remote Coastal Towns In Northern Chile Through Community Mapping., Gonzalo Bacigalupe

Gonzalo Bacigalupe, EdD, MPH

In 2015 and 2017 unusual ocean and atmospheric conditions produced many years’ worth of rainfall in short periods over Northern Chile’s Atacama Desert, resulting in catastrophic flooding in the town of Chañaral. However, the town is not only at risk of fluvial flooding, it is also at risk of tsunamis. Through a community mapping exercise, the authors attempted to establish the level of community awareness about tsunamis, and contrasted it with that of other types of water-related hazards facing the town (namely that of flooding due to high intensity rain). This was then compared with the results of field ...

Structural Assessment Of Highway "N" Power Substation Under Earthquake Loads, Genda Chen, Dongming Yan, Zuocai Wang, Seth Justin, J. David Rogers, Kazi Rezaul Karim Sep 2018

Structural Assessment Of Highway "N" Power Substation Under Earthquake Loads, Genda Chen, Dongming Yan, Zuocai Wang, Seth Justin, J. David Rogers, Kazi Rezaul Karim

J. David Rogers

In this study, the Highway N Substation was analyzed with a finite element model (FEM) for its vulnerability. The 'rigid' bus and electric switch components were characterized with full scale shake table tests. Each component of the substation was carefully modeled with due considerations of mass density, stiffness and geometries. Based on the FEM, modal analysis was conducted to identify the natural frequencies of the structure along with their corresponding mass participation factors. In response spectrum and time history analyses, the dynamic responses of main components, such as 'rigid' buses and switches, were evaluated. The magnitude and location of the ...

Earthquake Hazard Assessment Along Designated Emergency Vehicle Priority Access Routes, Neil Lennart Anderson, Hal Baker, Genda Chen, Tom Hertell, David J. Hoffman, Ronaldo Luna, Yulman Munaf, Shamsher Prakash, Paul Michael Santi, Richard Wesley Stephenson Sep 2018

Earthquake Hazard Assessment Along Designated Emergency Vehicle Priority Access Routes, Neil Lennart Anderson, Hal Baker, Genda Chen, Tom Hertell, David J. Hoffman, Ronaldo Luna, Yulman Munaf, Shamsher Prakash, Paul Michael Santi, Richard Wesley Stephenson

Genda Chen

Because of the compelling need to reopen vehicular access routes to Sikeston, Cape Girardeau and St. Louis following a devastating earthquake, Missouri Department of Transportation initiated a study of those portions of US 60 and MO 100 that have been officially designated as emergency vehicle priority access routes. The primary objectives of this study were twofold. Objective 1 was to establish a current subsurface and earthquake design geographic information systems (GIS) database for areas in proximity to designated portions of US 60 and MO 100 (includes counties of Butler, Stoddard, New Madrid, Franklin and St. Louis). Objective 2 was to ...

In this study, a platform has been developed for making a microfluidic device out of a transparent polymer with high chemical and physical resistance to facilitate visualization experiments for Enhance Oil Recovery (EOR) applications. NOA81 is the most suitable material for this purpose due to the compatibility with a wide variety of organic solvents and high physical and chemical resistance. The NOA81 microfluidic device was designed and fabricated capable of studying three-phase fluid flow in a pore network similar to that of consolidated water wet porous rock. The numerous fabrication steps were partially determined by literature review and further optimized ...
