Tungsten Doping Induced Superior Mechanical Properties Of Hafnium Oxide For Energy Applications, Ann Marie Uribe Jan 2018

Tungsten Doping Induced Superior Mechanical Properties Of Hafnium Oxide For Energy Applications, Ann Marie Uribe

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Hafnium oxide, or hafnia, is a high temperature refractory material with good electrical, chemical, optical, and thermodynamic properties. The effects of dopants have been widely studied, especially after the discovery of ferroelectricity induced in hafnia thin films. While attractive and used in the opto-electronic, memory devices, and semiconductor industries, there is a lack in the literature on enhancing the mechanical properties of hafnium oxide, specifically through doping it with tungsten, another material of interest particularly for future high temperature device applications. Thus, this work aimed to grow hafnia thin films doped with varying amounts of tungsten. The samples were grown …

A Study Of Ti-Doped Wo3 Thin Films Using Comparative Theoretical And Experimental Approach, Aurelio Paez Jan 2014

A Study Of Ti-Doped Wo3 Thin Films Using Comparative Theoretical And Experimental Approach, Aurelio Paez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Metal oxides like Tungsten Oxide (WO3) are well documented and characterized in the literature, with uses in darkening windows and mirrors, flat computer displays, solar panel cooling, and sensors (of interest in this study). Ti doping of WO3 is less documented and the focus of this study. Sample thin films of pure WO3 and varyingly Ti doped WO3 were prepared using Radio Frequency magnetron sputtering (RF) (13.56 MHz) to grow thin films on a silicon substrate. This study aims to compare multiple Ti doping percentages in WO3 theoretically and then compare with experimental data taken from thin films of various …

Characterization And Cytotoxic Assessment Of Ballistic Aerosolized Particulates For Tungsten Alloy Penetrators Interacting With Steel Targets, Brenda Ivette Machado Jan 2009

Characterization And Cytotoxic Assessment Of Ballistic Aerosolized Particulates For Tungsten Alloy Penetrators Interacting With Steel Targets, Brenda Ivette Machado

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The aerosolized particulates produced during an impact of depleted uranium munitions can potentially contaminate extensive areas around the impact sites and cause a wide spectrum of civilian and military damage. Thus materials such as WHA have been prompted for consideration. The present research is concerned with the regular collection of aerosol particulates associated with ballistic WHA rod penetration into rolled homogeneous steel (RHA) or other related steel armor as armor plate sequences. Particulate size characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) along with chemical compositions via energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were the focus of this research. …
