Structure And Energetics Of Nanoparticles And Ionomer Films In Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers, Qianping He Dec 2013

Structure And Energetics Of Nanoparticles And Ionomer Films In Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers, Qianping He

Doctoral Dissertations

Improving the durability and utilization efficiency of the platinum-on-carbon (Pt/C) catalyst is of vital importance to the commercialization of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). This body of work provides molecular level insights to aid the fulfillment of this goal. Chapter 1 describes the use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in an effort to understand the Pt/C degradation issue from the nano-adhesion point of view. The roles of catalyst nanoparticle size, shape, Pt/C surface oxidation and the extent of ionomer film hydration are investigated to study their effects on nano-particle adhesion. It is found that the adhesion force strengthens …

Reward-Driven Training Of Random Boolean Network Reservoirs For Model-Free Environments, Padmashri Gargesa Mar 2013

Reward-Driven Training Of Random Boolean Network Reservoirs For Model-Free Environments, Padmashri Gargesa

Dissertations and Theses

Reservoir Computing (RC) is an emerging machine learning paradigm where a fixed kernel, built from a randomly connected "reservoir" with sufficiently rich dynamics, is capable of expanding the problem space in a non-linear fashion to a higher dimensional feature space. These features can then be interpreted by a linear readout layer that is trained by a gradient descent method. In comparison to traditional neural networks, only the output layer needs to be trained, which leads to a significant computational advantage. In addition, the short term memory of the reservoir dynamics has the ability to transform a complex temporal input state …

Active Optimal Control Strategies For Increasing The Efficiency Of Photovoltaic Cells, Sharif Aljoaba Jan 2013

Active Optimal Control Strategies For Increasing The Efficiency Of Photovoltaic Cells, Sharif Aljoaba

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Energy consumption has increased drastically during the last century. Currently, the worldwide energy consumption is about 17.4 TW and is predicted to reach 25 TW by 2035. Solar energy has emerged as one of the potential renewable energy sources. Since its first physical recognition in 1887 by Adams and Day till nowadays, research in solar energy is continuously developing. This has lead to many achievements and milestones that introduced it as one of the most reliable and sustainable energy sources. Recently, the International Energy Agency declared that solar energy is predicted to be one of the major electricity production energy …
