Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship
Sustainable manufacturing is a vision that the manufacturing community has for contributing to the global society's ability to address sustainability issues. While there is no standard definition of sustainable manufacturing, one universally accepted notion is that sustainable manufacturing must optimally address a comprehensive set of highly interdependent objectives from environmental, economic and social perspectives. This is impossible without systems' thinking that guides the sustainable manufacturing activities every step of the way from product idea generation, to adoption of sustainable design and manufacturing processes, to selection of sustainable materials, and ultimately to product disposal, reuse or recycling. New course on sustainable …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Assessing student learning styles and incorporating thought-provoking activities has been a focus of research for years. Virtual technology and social media are transforming traditional classrooms into training spaces that can be tailored for individual learning patterns and personalized for different skill levels. These technological tools are not only revolutionizing the conventional lecture-based classroom but also beginning to incorporate options such as flipped and blended classrooms. Students in these nontraditional settings are given additional hands-on experience that allows them to become immersed in a variety of subjects. Flipped classrooms in particular use class time effectively by challenging students to prepare prior …

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This paper addresses one aspect of the opportunity for corporations to reduce leadership development infrastructure by narrowing the participant pool to candidates that, intuitively, may be multi-skilled and capable of handling diverse roles and assignments within the corporate environment. In particular, the study seeks to determine the effect that engineering education has on leadership style by comparing the leadership style of certified project managers (CPMs), and non-CPM managers with engineering degrees, to the same for CPMs, and non-CPM managers, who do not possess engineering degrees. Engineering degrees may be further defined as mechanical, electrical, industrial and the like. Leadership styles …

Classroom Exercise: Intro To Mechanical And Industrial Engineering, Erin Baker
Sustainability Education Resources
This classroom exercise was developed for Introduction to Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; Engineering Sustainability: Energy and the Environment. This is a freshman class with a class size of about 200. It is intended to get students to think critically about energy in the economy; to recognize the power of technological change; and to inspire them to work toward solving climate change.
