Tessellated Structural-Architectural Systems: Experimental Testing And Interdisciplinary Student Projects, Grace F. Crocker Aug 2022

Tessellated Structural-Architectural Systems: Experimental Testing And Interdisciplinary Student Projects, Grace F. Crocker

All Dissertations

This dissertation discusses a new structural system called a Tessellated Structural-Architectural (TeSA) system. These TeSA systems utilize architecturally appealing tessellations in load-bearing structures comprised of interlocking tiles in a pattern. This dissertation focuses on the design, construction, and structural behavior of these TeSA systems, as well as their value as an interdisciplinary learning tool.

This dissertation has 4 research objectives: 1) Demonstrate the fabrication and construction of a precast reinforced concrete (RC) TeSA shear wall system; 2) Measure the structural performance of the RC TeSA shear wall system; 3) Compare simplified shear and flexural analysis methods for RC TeSA shear …

In response to the clear need for faculty training, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) developed and funded Project ExCEEd (Excellence in Civil Engineering Education) which is celebrating its twentieth year of existence. For the past two decades, 38 ExCEEd Teaching Workshops (ETW) have been held at six different universities. The program has 910 graduates from over 267 different U.S. and international colleges and universities. The ExCEEd effort has transformed from one that relied on the grass roots support of its participants to one that is supported and embraced by department heads and deans. This paper summarizes the history …

Lessons In On-Campus And Distance Learning Delivery Of An Introductory Naval Architecture Course, Jennifer G. Michaeli Jan 2014

Lessons In On-Campus And Distance Learning Delivery Of An Introductory Naval Architecture Course, Jennifer G. Michaeli

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

This paper describes the author’s experiences in multi-mode (face-to-face and online) delivery of an introductory-level course on the topic of Naval Architecture geared towards anaudience of engineering and engineering technology undergraduate students with no previousmaritime background. The goal of this course is to expose talented undergraduate engineering students to the marine industry and to prepare those interested in pursing a career in this field with an introductory understanding of the complex nature of designing and building ships and other marine vessels. This course was offered in Spring 2013 and Fall 2013 to a group of engineering and engineering technology students. …

Connecting The “Forgotten”: Transportation Engineering, Poverty, And Social Justice In Sun Valley, Colorado, Jen Schneider, Junko Munakata Marr Jan 2013

Connecting The “Forgotten”: Transportation Engineering, Poverty, And Social Justice In Sun Valley, Colorado, Jen Schneider, Junko Munakata Marr

Jen Schneider

Yet [Sun Valley] has persisted. Out of neglect. Or the lack of resources and political will. It persists because Sun Valley represents in pure form the daunting legacy of social and economic segregation and the challenge of providing economic and educational opportunity to the neediest among us.

-Tina Griego, The Denver Post, 2010

The light rail stop at this location would be creating a means for companies to move into the community and the Sun Valley residents should not be forgotten when serving the area is concerned...the permanent residents of this area must not be forgotten.

An Inverted Teaching Model For A Mechanics Of Materials Course, Jeffery S. Thomas, Timothy A. Philpot Jun 2012

An Inverted Teaching Model For A Mechanics Of Materials Course, Jeffery S. Thomas, Timothy A. Philpot

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Instructors at Missouri University of Science and Technology have been offering certain sections of a mechanics of materials course in an inverted format for the past two years. In this format, students learn the concepts outside of class, using a textbook, animations and videos developed by the authors, and work on homework either individually or in groups during the optional class time. Students take eight multiple-choice exams and a final exam that is common to both the inverted sections and the more traditional lecture-based sections. Homework in the inverted sections is assigned but not graded. The in-class exams are given …

Undergraduate Summer Research In Structural Engineering, Norbert J. Delatte Jan 2004

Undergraduate Summer Research In Structural Engineering, Norbert J. Delatte

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

For the last seven years, a summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates site in structural engineering, funded by the National Science Foundation, has operated at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During this time, 33 students from 22 colleges and universities have participated in the site. Participants are recruited nationally and have come from as far away as California and Puerto Rico. The program is intended to provide students interested in graduate studies with an introduction to research methods, and to provide students who will not continue their studies past a bachelor of science in civil engineering with a better understanding …

Using The Ltpp Database In A Pavement Design Course, Norbert J. Delatte Oct 2002

Using The Ltpp Database In A Pavement Design Course, Norbert J. Delatte

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The Strategic Highway Research Program Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database provides considerable information about a large number of pavement test sections. The information may be easily accessed using DataPave 2.0 software, available free from the Federal Highway Administration. This software provides information on approximately 3,000 sections, with several modules for data analysis and extraction. This paper describes the integration of LTPP DataPave 2.0 software into a pavement design course. The database was used at several points throughout the course, including lessons on traffic characterization, materials, reliability, performance, and design. Twelve Texas pavement case studies were used. Each student was …
