Metal Thin Film Stiffness Extraction Technique For Surface Acoustic Wave Filters, Travis R. Weismeyer Dec 2018

Metal Thin Film Stiffness Extraction Technique For Surface Acoustic Wave Filters, Travis R. Weismeyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate knowledge of the surface acoustic wave (SAW) properties propagating at the surface of a piezoelectric substrate with thin films, electrodes or temperature compensated films, is critical in SAW filter design to meet the target frequency response, power durability and performance prior to device fabrication. While reliable material constants exist for substrates such as LiNbO3 used in SAW filters, the absolute elastic constants associated with operational thin films used for electrodes or temperature compensation do not exist. Although the bulk values of the constituent materials are known, the composite film/substrate properties are difficult to predict since they depend strongly on …

A Novel Fpga Implementation Of Hierarchical Temporal Memory Spatial Pooler, Paul Jeffrey Mitchell

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

There is currently a strong focus across the technological landscape to create machines capable of performing complex, objective based tasks in a manner similar to, or superior to a human. Many of the methods being explored in the machine intelligence space require large sets of labeled data to first train, and then classify inputs. Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM) is a biologically inspired machine intelligence framework which aims to classify and interpret streaming unlabeled data, without supervision, and be able to detect anomalies in such data.

In software HTM models, increasing the number of “columns” or processing elements to the levels …

Design And Analysis Of Binary Driven Coherent M-Ary Qam Transmitter For Next Generation Optical Networks, Naji Albakay Dec 2018

Design And Analysis Of Binary Driven Coherent M-Ary Qam Transmitter For Next Generation Optical Networks, Naji Albakay

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This work presents a design for a binary driven optical square M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmitter for high speed optical networks. The transmitter applies tandem quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulators to eliminate the need for linear broadband amplifiers and high-resolution digital to analog converters (DACs), which are both required by conventional transmitters. The transmitter design could be scaled to any order of square M-ary QAM by simply adding more QPSK modulators in tandem. It also provides a Gray coded symbol constellation, insuring the lowest bit error rate possible during symbol recovery. We also provide the design for the …

Effective Magnetic And Electric Response Of Composite Materials, Mona Hassan Alsaleh Nov 2018

Effective Magnetic And Electric Response Of Composite Materials, Mona Hassan Alsaleh

Doctoral Dissertations

Metamaterials (MMs) are nanocomposite materials consisting of metal-dielectric resonators much smaller in size than the wavelength of the incident light. Common examples of metamaterials are based on split ring resonators (SRRs), parallel wires or strips and fishnet structures. These types of materials are designed and fabricated in order to provide unique optical responses to the incident electromagnetic radiation that are not available in naturally existing materials. The MMs can exhibit unusual properties such as strong magnetism at terahertz (THz) and optical frequencies. Additionally, negative index materials (NIMs) can provide negative index of refraction which can be used in many applications …

Each power company is characterized by its reputation and competitiveness. The customers, acting as learning automata select the most appropriate power company to be served, in terms of price and electricity needs’ fulfillment, via a reinforcement learning based mechanism. Given customers’ power company selection, the DRM problem is formulated as a two-stage game theoretic optimization framework. At the first stage the optimal …

Using Low Power 5g Iot Devices Off-Network Utilizing Modified Prose Communication, John Aaron Swarner Nov 2018

Using Low Power 5g Iot Devices Off-Network Utilizing Modified Prose Communication, John Aaron Swarner

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In setups to enable IoT devices, high power radios are required in each of the devices separately. In order to reduce the power requirements for each individual device, a lower power radio could be used in order to reduce the total power requirements and size for the device and increase battery life or reduce power draws for each device. To enable this, a small change removing the application server requirements would be required. A mesh network could be used to enable communication to the main network, either to a tower that is within the range or through a larger relay …

Impact Of Communication Latency On The Bus Voltage Of Centrally Controlled Dc Microgrid During Islanding, Mahmoud Saleh, Yusef Esa, Ahmed Mohamed

Publications and Research

Maintaining a sustainable and reliable source of energy to supply critical loads within a renewable energy based microgrid (MG) during blackouts is directly related to its bus voltage variations. For example, voltage variation might trigger protection devices and disconnect DERs within the MG. Centrally controlled MGs (CCMGs) type is dependent on communication. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the impact of communication networks performance degradation, such as latency, on the bus voltage of CCMGs. This paper investigates the effect of wireless communication technologies latency on the bus voltage and performance of centralized DC MGs. Two mathematical models were developed …

The WSU is comprised of a microcontroller unit that enables on-board computations, a wireless transceiver that uses …

Improved Iterative Truncated Arithmetic Mean Filter, Prathyusha Surampudi Venkata Aug 2018

Improved Iterative Truncated Arithmetic Mean Filter, Prathyusha Surampudi Venkata

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses image processing and filtering techniques with emphasis on Mean filter, Median filter, and different versions of the Iterative Truncated Arithmetic Mean (ITM) filter. Specifically, we review in detail the ITM algorithms (ITM1 and ITM2) proposed by Xudong Jiang. Although filtering is capable of reducing noise in an image, it usually also results in smoothening or some other form of distortion of image edges and file details. Therefore, maintaining a proper trade off between noise reduction and edge/detail distortion is key. In this thesis, an improvement over Xudong Jiang’s ITM filters, namely ITM3, has been proposed and tested …

Multiple-Change-Point Modeling And Exact Bayesian Inference Of Degradation Signal For Prognostic Improvement, Yuxin Wen, Jianguo Wu, Qiang Matthew Zhou, Tzu-Liang Bill Tseng

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Prognostics play an increasingly important role in modern engineering systems for smart maintenance decision-making. In parametric regression-based approaches, the parametric models are often too rigid to model degradation signals in many applications. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian multiple-change-point (CP) modeling framework to better capture the degradation path and improve the prognostics. At the offline modeling stage, a novel stochastic process is proposed to model the joint prior of CPs and positions. All hyperparameters are estimated through an empirical two-stage process. At the online monitoring and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction stage, a recursive updating algorithm is developed to …

Expert labeling, tagging, and assessment are far more costly than the processes of collecting raw data. Generative modeling is a very powerful tool to tackle this real-world problem. It is shown here how these models can be used to allow for semi-supervised learning that performs very well in label-deficient conditions.

The foundation for the work in this dissertation is built upon visualizing generative models' latent spaces to gain deeper understanding of data, analyze faults, and propose solutions. A number of novel ideas and approaches are presented to improve single-label classification. This dissertation's main focus is on extending semi-supervised Deep Generative …
