Micro-Bathymetric Mapping Using Acoustic Range Images, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh Oct 2004

Micro-Bathymetric Mapping Using Acoustic Range Images, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh

Christopher N. Roman

This work focuses on the creation of high resolution micro-bathymetric maps using a high frequency pencil beam sonar. These maps typically cover areas of 10's to 100's of square meters. Data is collected using a sonar mounted to an underwater vehicle that can be positioned at discrete locations on the sea floor or flown in a survey pattern above the bottom. Specifically, we are focused on improving the accuracy of these terrain maps by merging sonar pings taken from multiple vantage points over the same location. This requires the adaption of data registration techniques to handle errors related to the …

Ultra-Wideband (Uwb) Communications: New Paradigms And Opportunities, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza Mar 2004

Ultra-Wideband (Uwb) Communications: New Paradigms And Opportunities, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza

Robert Henry Morelos-Zaragoza

In this talk, the unique characteristics of ultra wideband (UWB) communications systems are introduced. Receiver design considerations are presented. Focus is on the relation between the symbol duration and the delay spread of the channel. This determines whether the receiver should use a Rake receiver (Spread-spectrum system) or an equalizer (multiple carrier or OFDM system).

Zum Stand Der Elektronischen Kooperation - Fallstudien, Muster Und Handlungsempfehlungen, Enrico Senger Jan 2004

Zum Stand Der Elektronischen Kooperation - Fallstudien, Muster Und Handlungsempfehlungen, Enrico Senger

Enrico Senger

The Personal Digital Assistant (Pda) As A Tool For Telementoring Endoscopic Procedures., Cody K. Bumgardner

Abstract: The telementoring of surgical procedures is currently achieved via a wired infrastructure that usually requires sophisticated videoconference systems. This project represents the first step in assessing the potential for using handheld computers as a mobile alternative to current telementoring systems. Specifically, this project compares a handheld computer to a standard CRT monitor regarding their capability to accurately display video images from an endoscopic procedure. Video images from two previously recorded endoscopic procedures were transmitted from a standard VCR to: 1) a handheld computer (iPAQ 3670 running Pocket PC) via a wireless LAN and 2) a standard CRT monitor via …

Extracting User Intent In Mixed Initiative Teleoperator Control, Andrew H. Fagg, Michael Rosenstein, Robert Platt Jr., Roderic Grupen Dec 2003

Extracting User Intent In Mixed Initiative Teleoperator Control, Andrew H. Fagg, Michael Rosenstein, Robert Platt Jr., Roderic Grupen

Roderic Grupen

User fatigue is common with robot teleoperation interfaces. Mixed initiative control approaches attempt to reduce this fatigue by allowing control responsibility to be shared between the user and an intelligent control system. A critical challenge is how the user can communicate her intentions to the control system in an intuitive manner as possible. In the context of control of a humanoid robot, we propose an interface that uses the movement currently commanded by the user to assess the intended outcome. Specifically, given the observation of the motion of the teleoperated robot for a given period of time, we would like …

Earthquake risk management is an issue of international priority since many countries in the world are affected adversely by sudden earthquake. Frequent earthquakes are being encountered in many parts of the world every year. Recently India had some earthquake in latur, chamoli, Utrakanshi, Bhuj regions. The occurrence of earthquake has been on increase due to geographical changes taking place under the earth crust all over world. The heavy and unpredictable loss of life and destruction of resources have forced the seismologist and instrumentation engineers to develop sophisticated earth quake monitoring instruments with quick data analysis software. The latest development in …
