Morphology Based Framework For Improved Driver's Visibility In Inclement Weather Conditions, Saleem Farhood Hussein
Masters Theses
The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that on average there are 5,870,000 vehicle accidents each year. Twenty-three percent (23%) of these accidents are attributed to weather conditions with an annual average of more than 6,000 people are killed and 480,000 people are injured. Weather-related accidents occur mainly because of the low visibility on the roads under inclement conditions such as snow, rain and fog. While these conditions can be predictable and individuals try to avoid driving in inclement weather, there are circumstances that require driving in such conditions such as emergency responders or when the severity of the storm has …

Implementation Of A Neuromorphic Development Platform With Danna, Jason Yen-Shen Chan
Masters Theses
Neuromorphic computing is the use of artificial neural networks to solve complex problems. The specialized computing field has been growing in interest during the past few years. Specialized hardware that function as neural networks can be utilized to solve specific problems unsuited for traditional computing architectures such as pattern classification and image recognition. However, these hardware platforms have neural network structures that are static, being limited to only perform a specific application, and cannot be used for other tasks. In this paper, the feasibility of a development platform utilizing a dynamic artificial neural network for researchers is discussed.

Modifying Instruction Sets In The Gem5 Simulator To Support Fault Tolerant Designs, Chuan Zhang
Masters Theses
Traditional fault tolerant techniques such as hardware or time redundancy incur high overhead and are inefficient for checking arithmetic operations. Our objective is to study an alternative approach of adding new instructions to check arithmetic operations. These checking instructions either rely on error detecting code or calculate approximate results and consequently, consume much less execution time. To evaluate the effectiveness of such an approach we wish to modify several benchmarks to use checking instructions and run simulation experiments to find out their execution time and memory usage. However, the checking instructions are not included in the instruction set and as …

Internet plays a crucial part in today's world. Be it personal communication, business transactions or social networking, internet is used everywhere and hence the speed of the communication infrastructure plays an important role. As the number of users increase the network usage increases i.e., the network data rates ramped up from a few Mb/s to Gb/s in less than a decade. Hence the network infrastructure needed a major upgrade to be able to support such high data rates. Technological advancements have enabled the communication links like optical fibres to support these high bandwidths, but the processing speed at the nodes …
Middleware And Services For Dynamic Adaptive Neural Network Arrays, Joshua Caleb Willis
Middleware And Services For Dynamic Adaptive Neural Network Arrays, Joshua Caleb Willis
Masters Theses
Dynamic Adaptive Neural Network Arrays (DANNAs) are neuromorphic systems that exhibit spiking behaviors and can be designed using evolutionary optimization. Array elements are rapidly reconfigurable and can function as either neurons or synapses with programmable interconnections and parameters. Visualization applications can examine DANNA element connections, parameters, and functionality, and evolutionary optimization applications can utilize DANNA to speedup neural network simulations. To facilitate interactions with DANNAs from these applications, we have developed a language-agnostic application programming interface (API) that abstracts away low-level communication details with a DANNA and provides a high-level interface for reprogramming and controlling a DANNA. The library has …

This thesis presents a new mechanical design for an exoskeleton actuator to power the sagittal plane motion in the human hip. The device uses a DC motor to drive a Scotch yoke mechanism and series elasticity to take advantage of the cyclic nature of human gait and to reduce the maximum power and control requirements of the exoskeleton. The Scotch yoke actuator creates a position-dependent transmission that varies between 4:1 and infinity, with the peak transmission ratio aligned to the peak torque periods of the human gait cycle. Simulation results show that both the peak and average motor torque can …
Function Verification Of Combinational Arithmetic Circuits, Duo Liu
Function Verification Of Combinational Arithmetic Circuits, Duo Liu
Masters Theses
Hardware design verification is the most challenging part in overall hardware design process. It is because design size and complexity are growing very fast while the requirement for performance is ever higher. Conventional simulation-based verification method cannot keep up with the rapid increase in the design size, since it is impossible to exhaustively test all input vectors of a complex design. An important part of hardware verification is combinational arithmetic circuit verification. It draws a lot of attention because flattening the design into bit-level, known as the bit-blasting problem, hinders the efficiency of many current formal techniques. The goal of …

This hybrid system integrates physical document properties with digital security technology, which brings in a revolutionary idea for …
Performance Analysis Of Distance Relay On Shunt/Series Facts-Compensated Transmission Line, Ahmed Kareem Lafta Al-Behadili
Performance Analysis Of Distance Relay On Shunt/Series Facts-Compensated Transmission Line, Ahmed Kareem Lafta Al-Behadili
Masters Theses
Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) are increasingly being used to enhance the efficiency and reliability of power system networks. FACTS devices can influence the performance of existing protective system components (specifically distance relays) due to the fact that FACTS change power system quantities such as line impedances, voltages, and currents. Distance relay may mal-operate when FACTS devices are connected since they cause some of the tripping characteristics to change. This thesis investigates the impact on distance relay performance due to compensations using two types of FACTS controllers: Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC). Analytical study …
Reliabilibity Aware Thermal Management Of Real-Time Multi-Core Systems, Shikang Xu
Reliabilibity Aware Thermal Management Of Real-Time Multi-Core Systems, Shikang Xu
Masters Theses
Continued scaling of CMOS technology has led to increasing working temperature of VLSI circuits. High temperature brings a greater probability of permanent errors (failure) in VLSI circuits, which is a critical threat for real-time systems. As the multi-core architecture is gaining in popularity, this research proposes an adaptive workload assignment approach for multi-core real-time systems to balance thermal stress among cores. While previously developed scheduling algorithms use temperature as the criterion, the proposed algorithm uses reliability of each core in the system to dynamically assign tasks to cores. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm gains as large as …
Energy Agile Cluster Communication, Muhammad Zain Mustafa
Energy Agile Cluster Communication, Muhammad Zain Mustafa
Masters Theses
Computing researchers have long focused on improving energy-efficiency?the amount of computation per joule? under the implicit assumption that all energy is created equal. Energy however is not created equal: its cost and carbon footprint fluctuates over time due to a variety of factors. These fluctuations are expected to in- tensify as renewable penetration increases. Thus in my work I introduce energy-agility a design concept for a platform?s ability to rapidly and efficiently adapt to such power fluctuations. I then introduce a representative application to assess energy-agility for the type of long-running, parallel, data-intensive tasks that are both common in data …
Energy Efficiency Exploration Of Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Architecture With Emerging Nonvolatile Memory, Xiaobin Liu
Energy Efficiency Exploration Of Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Architecture With Emerging Nonvolatile Memory, Xiaobin Liu
Masters Theses
With the rapid growth in consumer electronics, people expect thin, smart and powerful devices, e.g. Google Glass and other wearable devices. However, as portable electronic products become smaller, energy consumption becomes an issue that limits the development of portable systems due to battery lifetime. In general, simply reducing device size cannot fully address the energy issue.
To tackle this problem, we propose an on-chip interconnect infrastructure and pro- gram storage structure for a coarse-grained reconfigurable architecture (CGRA) with emerging non-volatile embedded memory (MRAM). The interconnect is composed of a matrix of time-multiplexed switchboxes which can be dynamically reconfigured with the …
Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory: Applications And Extensions, Clayton Parker Smith
Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory: Applications And Extensions, Clayton Parker Smith
Masters Theses
"Adaptive Resonance Theory, ART, is a powerful clustering tool for learning arbitrary patterns in a self-organizing manner. In this research, two papers are presented that examine the extensibility and applications of ART. The first paper examines a means to boost ART performance by assigning each cluster a vigilance value, instead of a single value for the whole ART module. A Particle Swarm Optimization technique is used to search for desirable vigilance values. In the second paper, it is shown how ART, and clustering in general, can be a useful tool in preprocessing time series data. Clustering quantization attempts to meaningfully …
Common Path Pessimism Removal In Static Timing Analysis, Chunyu Wang
Common Path Pessimism Removal In Static Timing Analysis, Chunyu Wang
Masters Theses
"Static timing analysis is a key process to guarantee timing closure for modern IC designs. However, additional pessimism can significantly increase the difficulty to achieve timing closure. Common path pessimism removal (CPPR) is a prevalent step to achieve accurate timing signoff. To speed up the existing exhaustive exploration on all paths in a design, this thesis introduces a fast multi-threading timing analysis for removing common path pessimism based on block-based static timing analysis. Experimental results show that the proposed method has faster runtime in removing excess pessimism from clock paths."--Abstract, page iii.

"In the present research two techniques are applied for leak detection in pipelines. The first method is a hardware-based technique which uses ultrasonic wave's emission for pipeline inspection. Ultrasonic waves are propagated in the pipe walls and reflected signal from leakage will be used for pipe analysis. Several Pipes with various dimensions and characteristics are modeled by finite element method using ANSYS. Second order longitudinal modes of ultrasonic waves are emitted in their walls. For this purpose, excited frequency is calculated such that it excites the second order longitude mode. In order to investigate the behavior of emitted wave in …
A Novel Entropy Production Based Full-Chip Tsv Fatigue Analysis, Tianchen Wang
A Novel Entropy Production Based Full-Chip Tsv Fatigue Analysis, Tianchen Wang
Masters Theses
"Through-silicon vias (TSVs) are subject to thermal fatigue due to stress over time, no matter how small the stress is. Existing works on TSV fatigue all rely on measurement-based parameters to estimate the lifetime, and cannot consider detailed thermal profiles. In this paper, we propose a new method for TSV fatigue prediction using entropy production during thermal cycles. By combining thermodynamics and mechanics laws, the fatigue process can be quantitatively evaluated with detailed thermal profiles. Experimental results show that interestingly, the landing pad possesses the most easy-to-fail region, which generates up to 50% more entropy compared with the TSV body. …

Computer Aided Detection Of Oral Lesions On Ct Images, Shaikat Mahmood Galib
Masters Theses
"Oral lesions are important findings on computed tomography images. They are difficult to detect on CT images because of low contrast, arbitrary orientation of objects, complicated topology and lack of clear lines indicating lesions. In this thesis, a fully automatic method to detect oral lesions from dental CT images is proposed to identify (1) Closed boundary lesions and (2) Bone deformation lesions. Two algorithms were developed to recognize these two types of lesions, which cover most of the lesion types that can be found on CT images. The results were validated using a dataset of 52 patients. Using non training …
Dependability Analysis And Recovery Support For Smart Grids, Isam Abdulmunem Alobaidi
Dependability Analysis And Recovery Support For Smart Grids, Isam Abdulmunem Alobaidi
Masters Theses
"The increasing scale and complexity of power grids exacerbate concerns about failure propagation. A single contingency, such as outage of a transmission line due to overload or weather-related damage, can cause cascading failures that manifest as blackouts. One objective of smart grids is to reduce the likelihood of cascading failure through the use of power electronics devices that can prevent, isolate, and mitigate the effects of faults. Given that these devices are themselves prone to failure, we seek to quantify the effects of their use on dependability attributes of smart grid. This thesis articulates analytical methods for analyzing two dependability …
