Graph summarization is a fundamental problem in the field of data analysis, aiming to distill extensive graph datasets into more manageable, yet informative representations. The challenge lies in creating compressed graphs that faithfully retain crucial structural information for downstream tasks. A recent advancement in this domain introduces an optimal transport-based framework that enables the incorporation of a priori knowledge regarding the importance of nodes, edges, and attributes during the graph summarization process. As the non-volatile memory (NVM) technology offers near-DRAM performance and near-disk capacity, NVM has emerged as a new storage class. Conventional file systems, designed for hard disk drives or solid-state drives, need to be re-examined or even re-designed for NVM storage. For example, new file systems such as NOVA, HMFS, HMVFS and Ext4-DAX, have been developed and implemented to fully leverage NVM’s characteristics, such as fast fine-grained access. In this thesis, we explore the speed, power, and energy performance of the same data process on the central processing unit (CPU) with and without the acceleration of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) on the microcomputer Raspberry Pi (RPI). We tested on the RPI in two different fields. The first was comparing the speed, power, and energy usage with and without GPU acceleration in the image processing impacts on RPI model B+. The second was comparing speed, power, energy usage, and accuracy for scientific calculation with and without GPU acceleration on RPI model B+ and 3B.

As Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), or “drone” applications expand, new methods for sensing, navigating and avoiding obstacles need to be developed. The project applies an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to a simulated quadcopter vehicle though Matlab in order to estimate not only the vehicle state but the world state around the vehicle. The EKF integrates multiple sensor readings from range sensors, IMU sensors, and radiation sensors and combines this information to optimize state estimates. The result is an estimated world map to be used in vehicle navigation and obstacle avoidance.

Automated annotation of information about indoor environments is needed for natural-language processing tasks, such as spatially anchoring events, tracking objects in motion, scene descriptions, and interpretation of thematic places in relationship to confirmed locations. The Federal Aviation Administration is in the process of replacing the current Air Traffic Management (ATM) system with a new system known as NextGen. Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is the aircraft surveillance protocol currently being introduced as a part of the NextGen system deployment. In this thesis, we describe our work to understand and improve the performance and scalability of the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) on the Ranger supercomputer. PISM enables the simulation of large-scale ice sheets, such as those found in Greenland and Antarctica, which are of particular interest to climate scientists due to their potential to contribute to sea-level rise.

When browsing a graphical display of geospatial data on mobile devices, users typically change the displayed maps by panning, zooming in and out, or rotating the device. Limited storage space on mobile devices and slow wireless communications, however, impede the performance of these operations. Recently reported double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) devices manufactured in Indium Phosphide (InP) technology with ft and fmax both over 300 GHz enable advanced high-speed digital and mixed-signal circuits. In this thesis, the use of InP DHBT devices for high-speed accumulator circuits and X– and Ku–band direct digital synthesizer (DDS) circuits are investigated. At these frequencies, new technological challenges in the design of digital and mixed-signal circuits arise in areas including power consumption and clock distribution. DNA microarray technology allows for the parallel analysis of the expression of genes in an organism. The wealth of spatio-temporal data provided by the technology allows us to attempt to reverse engineer the genetic network. Fuzzy logic has been proposed as a method of analyzing the relationships between genes as well as their corresponding proteins.
