Textual Case-Based Reasoning For Spam Filtering: A Comparison Of Feature-Based And Feature-Free Approaches, Sarah Jane Delany, Derek Bridge

Articles

Spam filtering is a text classification task to which Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) has been successfully applied. We describe the ECUE system, which classifies emails using a feature-based form of textual CBR. Then, we describe an alternative way to compute the distances between cases in a feature-free fashion, using a distance measure based on text compression. This distance measure has the advantages of having no set-up costs and being resilient to concept drift. We report an empirical comparison, which shows the feature-free approach to be more accurate than the feature-based system. These results are fairly robust over different compression algorithms in …

An Experimental Analysis Of The Call Capacity Of Ieee 802.11b Wireless Local Area Networks For Voip Telephony, Brian Keegan, Mark Davis Jun 2006

An Experimental Analysis Of The Call Capacity Of Ieee 802.11b Wireless Local Area Networks For Voip Telephony, Brian Keegan, Mark Davis

Conference papers

In this paper we present the results from an experimental study of the call capacity of an IEEE 802.11b network when using VoIP telephony. Experiments include increasing the number of VoIP users in a wireless test-bed and increasing the level of background traffic until network saturation occurs. The experiments allow us to perform an analysis of the access point (AP) buffer dynamics. Results show that the network is capable of supporting up to 16 VoIP stations (STAs). Due to the operation of the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) mechanism, the AP acts as a bottleneck for all traffic destined …

A Comparative Test Of Brillouin Amplification And Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplification For The Generation Of Millimeter Waves With Low Phase Noise Properties, Markus Junker, Max Ammann, Andreas Schwarzbacher, Jens Klinger, Kai-Utwe Lauterback, Thomas Schneider Jan 2006

A Comparative Test Of Brillouin Amplification And Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplification For The Generation Of Millimeter Waves With Low Phase Noise Properties, Markus Junker, Max Ammann, Andreas Schwarzbacher, Jens Klinger, Kai-Utwe Lauterback, Thomas Schneider

Articles

Measurements of phase noise of a 40-GHz carrier signal are presented. The carrier is generated by the amplification of harmonics due to stimulated Brillouin scattering. An analogy to a generation of millimeter waves by an erbium-doped fiber instead of the Brillouin amplifier is investigated and discussed. In our setup, both show a comparable behavior in respect to their noise characteristics.

Hand Posture Recognition In Sign Language Using Shape Distributions, Eamonn Young, Gary Clynch Jan 2006

Hand Posture Recognition In Sign Language Using Shape Distributions, Eamonn Young, Gary Clynch

Conference Papers

A shape distribution is a histogram used to uniquely identify different shapes. The histogram is produced by taking random distances on the surface of a shape or object. Theoretically, each shape or object should produce a unique histogram, as the distribution of distances for each shape should be different. Shape distributions have recently been implemented in a number of object recognition areas. They are an attractive method as they are inherently simple, fast and generic. This paper presents the results of research undertaken on the application of shape distributions for the purpose of sign language recognition. There are four main …

Harmonically Combined Contour Icons For Concurrent Auditory Display, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2006

Harmonically Combined Contour Icons For Concurrent Auditory Display, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper considers the harmonic combination of basic melodic shapes known as contour icons in concurrent auditory displays. Existing work in the field (such as that concerning earcons) has considered the combination of patterns designed using low level cognitive features, and so effective streaming is difficult. This work investigates means by which musical patterns with high level cognitive features (such as contour) representing data values can be rendered concurrently, so that multiple data sets can be effectively conveyed using an auditory display. The detection and comprehension of harmonically combined contour icons was tested in comparison to those combined uniquely (non …

Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2006

Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper considers the use of Contour Icons in the design and implementation of musical patterns, for the purposes of detection and recognition. Research work had endeavoured to deliver musical patterns that were both distinct and memorable, and to this end a set of basic melodic shapes were introduced using a Sonification application called TrioSon that had been designed for the purpose. Existing work in the field (such as that concerning Earcon design) has considered the mechanisms by which patterns may be made distinctive, but it is argued that separate consideration must be given to the method of making such …

Serious Gordon: Using Serious Games To Teach Food Safety In The Kitchen., Brian Mac Namee, Pauline Rooney, Patrick Lindstrom, Andrew Ritchie, Frances Boylan, Greg Burke

Conference papers

This paper will describe the development of Serious Gordon, an interactive digital game developed to tech the basics of kitchen food safety to workers in industries dealing with food. The motivations driving the development of the game will be described as will the development process itself. An initial evaluation of the game, from both a technical and pedagogical point of view, will be presented as will conclusions on the viability of using a commercial game engine for the purpose of developing educational games.

Learning Traditional Irish Music Using A Pda, Bryan Duggan Jan 2006

Learning Traditional Irish Music Using A Pda, Bryan Duggan

Conference papers

A common problem experienced by musicians in traditional music sessions is that of recalling tunes on demand from a large repertoire. Traditional music is largely an oral medium and musicians may recall a name or player of a tune or set, but require hearing the first few notes to start the tune. In this paper, we present our work developing TunePal, a tool that can be used by musicians for the storage and retrieval of traditional music melodies for learning purposes. TunePal is specifically desiged to be used by musicians playing Irish traditional music in sessions as it supports the …

Generation Of High Quality Audio Natural Emotional Speech Corpus Using Task Based Mood Induction, Charlie Cullen, Brian Vaughan, Spyros Kousidis, Yi Wang, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Dermot Campbell Jan 2006

Generation Of High Quality Audio Natural Emotional Speech Corpus Using Task Based Mood Induction, Charlie Cullen, Brian Vaughan, Spyros Kousidis, Yi Wang, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Dermot Campbell

Conference papers

Detecting emotional dimensions [1] in speech is an area of great research interest, notably as a means of improving human computer interaction in areas such as speech synthesis [2]. In this paper, a method of obtaining high quality emotional audio speech assets is proposed. The methods of obtaining emotional content are subject to considerable debate, with distinctions between acted [3] and natural [4] speech being made based on the grounds of authenticity. Mood Induction Procedures (MIP’s) [5] are often employed to stimulate emotional dimensions in a controlled environment. This paper details experimental procedures based around MIP 4, using performance related …

Attention Driven Reference Resolution In Multimodal Contexts, John D. Kelleher Jan 2006

Attention Driven Reference Resolution In Multimodal Contexts, John D. Kelleher

Articles

In recent years a a number of psycholinguistic experiments have pointed to the interaction between language and vision. In particular, the interaction between visual attention and linguistic reference. In parallel with this, several theories of discourse have attempted to provide an account of the relationship between types of referential expressions on the one hand and the degree of mental activation on the other. Building on both of these traditions, this paper describes an attention based approach to visually situated reference resolution. The framework uses the relationship between referential form and preferred mode of interpretation as a basis for a weighted …
