Machine Learning-Based Recognition On Crowdsourced Food Images, Aditya Kulkarni May 2021

Machine Learning-Based Recognition On Crowdsourced Food Images, Aditya Kulkarni

Honors Scholar Theses

With nearly a third of the world’s population suffering from food-induced chronic diseases such as obesity, the role of food in community health is required now more than ever. While current research underscores food proximity and density, there is a dearth in regard to its nutrition and quality. However, recent research in geospatial data collection and analysis as well as intelligent deep learning will help us study this further.

Employing the efficiency and interconnection of computer vision and geospatial technology, we want to study whether healthy food in the community is attainable. Specifically, with the help of deep learning in …

A Big Data Lake For Multilevel Streaming Analytics, Ruoran Liu, Haruna Isah, Farhana Zulkernine Sep 2020

A Big Data Lake For Multilevel Streaming Analytics, Ruoran Liu, Haruna Isah, Farhana Zulkernine

Publications and Scholarship

Large organizations are seeking to create new architectures and scalable platforms to effectively handle data management challenges due to the explosive nature of data rarely seen in the past. These data management challenges are largely posed by the availability of streaming data at high velocity from various sources in multiple formats. The changes in data paradigm have led to the emergence of new data analytics and management architecture. This paper focuses on storing high volume, velocity and variety data in the raw formats in a data storage architecture called a data lake. First, we present our study on the limitations …

Promoting Information Resources To Students: Using Wordpress To Maintain Library Data Sets, Derek Stadler Jan 2017

Promoting Information Resources To Students: Using Wordpress To Maintain Library Data Sets, Derek Stadler

Publications and Research

Although it began as a blog tool, WordPress has grown into a complete content management system with thousands of interactive themes available. Since it uses the MySQL database management system, the open-source software suits the needs of library websites by aggregating a college library’s complete database inventory. Rather than update several HTML pages within a site when new vendors are added or a URL is changed, information from vendors can be maintained in a database table and then displayed to students, highlighting available resources and information. The presentation highlights the use of some simple WordPress plugins to manage many aggregators …

Computer Engineering

MusicTrackr is an IoT device that musicians attach to their instruments. The device has a start and stop button that allows users to record their playing sessions. Each recorded session is sent wirelessly to a cloud database. An accompanying website displays all of the recorded sessions, organized by date. After picking a specific date, the user can view graphs showing total practice time and average session length as well play back any recordings during that date. In addition, the user may add comments to any specific date or recording. Lastly, the user may tag a specific date with a color …

Will Wade’S Team Camp: An Online Registration Service For Will Wade’S Basketball Team Camp At Vcu, William Slattum, Melissa Nierle Jan 2016

Will Wade’S Team Camp: An Online Registration Service For Will Wade’S Basketball Team Camp At Vcu, William Slattum, Melissa Nierle

Capstone Design Expo Posters

Virginia Commonwealth University(VCU) has made a name for its self on the national stage of NCAA Men’s Basketball. Success on the court has brought attention to the many programs VCU has to offer. One of these popular programs is Will Wade’s summer basketball camp. Teams come from all over the Atlantic region to attend the daylong team camp. With such wide-spread interest in the camp and about 50 teams signing up to participate annually and growing, how can VCU Athletics best handle and keep all of the information organized? The project deliverable was an online system that both registers teams …

Computers are essential to research yet the different ways in which computers can automate or speed up research have not been fully explored. Researchers are publishing experimental results faster than ever before and the number of articles to read on a single subject now presents an overwhelming task. FiND aims to expedite this process through an extensible backbone infrastructure for the automated synthesizing of data. FiND includes a Web User Interface, Perl Core and MySQL Database developed using the software constraints of Perl, HTML, CSS, CGI and MySQL. FiND attempts to simplify this task by reducing time spent in exhaustive …

A Novel, Tag-Based File-System, Aaron Laursen

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

For decades, computer use has largely focused on managing and manipulating files-- creating and consuming media, browsing the web, software development, and even, with such systems as UNIX and Plan$9$, direct device access can largely be reduced to locating, creating, reading, and writing files. To facilitate these operations, developers have created a vast assortment of file-systems, each presenting a unique framework underlying nearly everything people do with a computer.

For various reasons, these file-systems have historically represented only incremental improvements and alterations from their predecessors, leaving the basic design and interaction models relatively unchanged. Because of this, most common file-systems …

The Censsis Web-Accessible Image Database System, Furong Yang, David Kaeli Apr 2012

The Censsis Web-Accessible Image Database System, Furong Yang, David Kaeli

David Kaeli

The Gordon-CenSSIS Web accessible Image Database System (CenSSIS-DB) is a scientific database that enables effective collaborative scientific data sharing and accelerates fundamental research. We describe a state-of-the-art system using the Oracle RDBMS and J2EE technologies to provide remote, Internet based data management. The system incorporates efficient submission and retrieval of images and metadata, indexing of metadata for efficient searching, and complex relational query capabilities.

Database Development And Intranet Based Image Included Database Management System For Ballistic Firearm Identification System, Toni C. Jiao Jan 2003

Database Development And Intranet Based Image Included Database Management System For Ballistic Firearm Identification System, Toni C. Jiao

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The process of imaging, collecting and searching a cartridge case to identifying its suspected firearm is a time consuming procedure. Within this study, a cartridge case identification database management system in an Intranet environment is designed and implemented, thus enabling firearm examiners from different forensic laboratories to engage firearm identification without the constraints of time and location. Specifically, the study investigates appropriate database management system for image involved and Intranet secured ballistics firearm identification database. The results demonstrated that a computerized firearm identification system could be implemented in Intranet with a secure, scalable, performable Intranet database management system.
