Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based brief interventional technique that has been demonstrated to be effective in triggering behavior change in patients. To facilitate behavior change, healthcare practitioners adopt a nonconfrontational, empathetic dialogic style, a core component of MI. Despite its advantages, MI has been severely underutilized mainly due to the cognitive overload on the part of the MI dialogue evaluator, who has to assess MI dialogue in real-time and calculate MI characteristic metrics (number of open-ended questions, close-ended questions, reflection, and scale-based sentences) for immediate post-session evaluation both in MI training and clinical settings. To automate dialogue assessment and …
Physically Based Rendering Techniques To Visualize Thin-Film Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Fluid Simulations, Aditya H. Prasad
Physically Based Rendering Techniques To Visualize Thin-Film Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Fluid Simulations, Aditya H. Prasad
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
This thesis introduces a methodology and workflow I developed to visualize smoothed hydrodynamic particle based simulations for the research paper ’Thin-Film Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Fluid’ (2021), that I co-authored. I introduce a physically based rendering model which allows point cloud simulation data representing thin film fluids and bubbles to be rendered in a photorealistic manner. This includes simulating the optic phenomenon of thin-film interference and rendering the resulting iridescent patterns. The key to the model lies in the implementation of a physically based surface shader that accounts for the interference of infinitely many internally reflected rays in its bidirectional surface …

Visualization For Solving Non-Image Problems And Saliency Mapping, Divya Chandrika Kalla
All Master's Theses
High-dimensional data play an important role in knowledge discovery and data science. Integration of visualization, visual analytics, machine learning (ML), and data mining (DM) are the key aspects of data science research for high-dimensional data. This thesis is to explore the efficiency of a new algorithm to convert non-images data into raster images by visualizing data using heatmap in the collocated paired coordinates (CPC). These images are called the CPC-R images and the algorithm that produces them is called the CPC-R algorithm. Powerful deep learning methods open an opportunity to solve non-image ML/DM problems by transforming non-image ML problems into …

In the last decade, the advent of social media and microblogging services have inevitably changed our world. These services produce vast amounts of streaming data, and one of the most important ways of analyzing and discovering interesting trends in the streaming data is through clustering. In clustering streaming data, it is desirable to perform a single pass over incoming data, such that we do not need to process old data again, and the clustering model should evolve over time not to lose any important feature statistics of the data. In this research, we have developed a new clustering system that …

Navigating in a Virtual Environment with traditional input devices such as mouse, joysticks and keyboards provide limited maneuverability and is also time consuming. While working in a virtual environment, changing parameters to obtain the desired visualization requires time to achieve by manually entering parameter values in an algorithm to test outcomes. The following thesis presents an alternate user interface to reduce user efforts, while navigating within the Virtual Environment. The user interface is an Android application which is designed to accommodate spoken commands. This Speech Enabled User Interface termed as the Speech Navigation Application (SNA), provides the user with an …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an applied data science methodology on a set of University of Louisville, Speed School of Engineering student data. We used data mining and classic statistical techniques to help educational researchers quickly see the data trends and peculiarities. Our data includes scores and information about two Engineering Fundamental Class. The format of these classes is called an inverted classroom model or flipped class. The purpose of this study is to analyze the data in order to uncover potentially hidden information, tell interesting stories about the data, examine student learning behavior and learning performance in an active learning environment, …

In this thesis, we have designed and developed a computer graphics and visualization based analysis and record system for hand surgery and therapy practice. In particular, we have designed and developed three novel technologies: (i) model-based data compression for hand motion records (ii) model-based surface area estimation of a human hand and (iii) an emulated study of hand wound area estimation. First, we have presented a new data compression technique to better address the needs of electronic health record systems, such as file storage and privacy. In our proposed approach, we will extract the patient's hand motion information and store …

In this thesis, we have designed and developed a motion tracking and visualization system using the latest motion tracking sensory technologies. It is one of the enabling technologies for our novel visual-inertial odometer and human anatomy based 3D Locating, Mapping and Navigation system for endoscopy and drug delivery capsules used inside GI tract. In particular, we have: i) designed and completed a cloud-based sensory data collecting, processing and storage system to provide the reliable computing and storage platform; ii) explored different data processing methods to obtain improved-quality motion results from extremely noisy raw data, e.g., by using a low pass …

Visualization is an important task in data analytics, as it allows researchers to view abstract patterns within the data instead of reading through extensive raw data. Allowing the ability to interact with the visualizations is an essential aspect since it provides the ability to intuitively explore data to find meaning and patterns more efficiently. Interactivity, however, becomes progressively more difficult as the size of the dataset increases. This project begins by leveraging existing web-based data visualization technologies and extends their functionality through the use of parallel processing. This methodology utilizes state-of-the-art techniques, such as Node.js, to split the visualization rendering …
Use Of Immersive Visualization For The Control Of Dental Anxiety During Dental Hygiene Treatment, Carmelo Padrino-Barrios
Use Of Immersive Visualization For The Control Of Dental Anxiety During Dental Hygiene Treatment, Carmelo Padrino-Barrios
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of immersive visualization (IV) therapy, a technique that provides visual and stereoscopic display through the use of eyewear, in anxious patients during an oral prophylaxis. Methods: A convenience sample of thirty adults was enrolled. A split mouth design was utilized. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups: group A (use of IV for the right side of the mouth), and group B (use of IV for the left side of the mouth). Subjects received a full mouth oral prophylaxis (removal of supra and subgingival calculus and selective polishing), always …

Digital media players often include a visualization component that allows a user to watch a visualization synchronized to their music or videos. This project uses the visualization plugin API of an existing media playback program (WinAmp) but it displays its visuals using physical LED lights. Instead of outputting visuals to the computer screen, data is sent over USB to a micro controller that runs the LED lights. This project aims to give users a more visceral visual experience than traditional visualizations on the computer screen.
