School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Abstract - Is it true that some of the inhabitants of the world’s today are still hesitant in using computers? Research has shown that today many people are still against the use of computers. Computer technology management can be said to be obliterated by security problems. Research shows that some people in society feel reluctant or afraid to use computers because of errors and exposure of their privacy and their sophistication, which sometimes are caused by computer hackers and malfunction of the computers. The dilemma of not utilizing computer technology at all or, to its utmost, by certain people in …
Improving Computer Network Operations Through Automated Interpretation Of State, Abhishek Dwaraki
Improving Computer Network Operations Through Automated Interpretation Of State, Abhishek Dwaraki
Doctoral Dissertations
Networked systems today are hyper-scaled entities that provide core functionality for distributed services and applications spanning personal, business, and government use. It is critical to maintain correct operation of these networks to avoid adverse business outcomes. The advent of programmable networks has provided much needed fine-grained network control, enabling providers and operators alike to build some innovative networking architectures and solutions. At the same time, they have given rise to new challenges in network management. These architectures, coupled with a multitude of devices, protocols, virtual overlays on top of physical data-plane etc. make network management a highly challenging task. Existing …
Common Management Gaps In The Life Cycle Of Digitized Objects, Jocelyn Wehr
Common Management Gaps In The Life Cycle Of Digitized Objects, Jocelyn Wehr
Central Plains Network for Digital Asset Management
Presented from the perspective of someone responsible for creating the digital objects that will eventually be included in a digital preservation program, this poster session will identify common issues that make the management and preservation of digital objects more challenging. Digital preservation needs to be talked about within the digitization workflow, because it takes a lot of work to produce the best digital objects possible. We are often focused on the immediate use of the digital objects and less focused on their long-term use. Even with best practices in mind, there is often an immediate need (patron orders, for example) …

Mims: Mobile Interruption Management System, Mohammad Kayes Kaykobad
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Mobile devices are increasing in an astronomical rate throughout the world. While it is bringing a lot of comfort to the users it is not coming without any hazards. Now a user is susceptible to mobile call interruptions wherever he is, whether he is in the middle of a very important discussion or in a very important task like performing a complicated emergency operation in a hospital. As a result researchers have been studying to find ways to minimize cost of mobile interruptions. In this thesis we have proposed a mobile interruption management system in which callers have been grouped …

What do community interpreting for the Deaf in western societies, conference interpreting for the European Parliament, and language brokering in international management have in common? Academic research and professional training have historically emphasized the linguistic and cognitive challenges of interpreting, neglecting or ignoring the social aspects that structure communication. All forms of interpreting are inherently social; they involve relationships among at least three people and two languages. The contexts explored here, American Sign Language/English interpreting and spoken language interpreting within the European Parliament, show that simultaneous interpreting involves attitudes, norms and values about intercultural communication that overemphasize information and discount …
Bandwidth Management And Quality Of Service, Adalbert Engel
Bandwidth Management And Quality Of Service, Adalbert Engel
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
With the advent of bandwidth-hungry video and audio applications, demand for bandwidth is expected to exceed supply. Users will require more bandwidth and, as always, there are likely to be more users. As the Internet user base becomes more diverse, there is an increasing perception that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should be able to differentiate between users, so that the specific needs of different types of users can be met. Differentiated services is seen as a possible solution to the bandwidth problem. Currently, however, the technology used on the Internet differentiates neither between users, nor between applications. The thesis focuses …
