A Modified Genetic Algorithm For A Special Case Of The Generalized Assignment Problem, Murat Dörterler, Ömer Faruk Bay, Mehmet Ali̇ Akcayol

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Many central examinations are performed nationwide in Turkey. These examinations are held simultaneously throughout Turkey. Examinees attempt to arrive at the examination centers at the same time and they encounter problems such as traffic congestion, especially in metropolises. The state of mind that this situation puts them into negatively affects the achievement and future goals of the test takers. Our solution to minimize the negative effects of this issue is to assign the test takers to closest examination centers taking into account the capacities of examination halls nearby. This solution is a special case of the generalized assignment problem (GAP). …

An Efficient Ofdm-Based System With An Insufficient Cyclic Prefix Via A Novel Constellation Algorithm, Saeed Ghazi-Maghrebi Jan 2017

An Efficient Ofdm-Based System With An Insufficient Cyclic Prefix Via A Novel Constellation Algorithm, Saeed Ghazi-Maghrebi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a new special triangular constellation scheme is introduced to replace the commonly used rectangular QAM constellation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. We have shown that this new scheme has 3 major advantages with respect to the well-known QAM. The first advantage is its lower error probability performance, which results from better usage of the constellation space with longer minimum distances. The 2 other advantages are a lower peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and higher noise immunity. Both mathematical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that by applying standard channels in 2 cases, i.e. channels with …

Hadoop Framework Implementation And Performance Analysis On A Cloud, Göksu Zeki̇ye Özen, Mehmet Tekerek, Rayi̇mbek Sultanov

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The Hadoop framework uses the MapReduce programming paradigm to process big data by distributing data across a cluster and aggregating. MapReduce is one of the methods used to process big data hosted on large clusters. In this method, jobs are processed by dividing into small pieces and distributing over nodes. Parameters such as distributing method over nodes, the number of jobs held in a parallel fashion, and the number of nodes in the cluster affect the execution time of jobs. The aim of this paper is to determine how the numbers of nodes, maps, and reduces affect the performance of …

Traffic Density Estimation Via Kde And Nonlinear Ls, Mi̇kai̇l Erdem, Mehmet Kemal Özdemi̇r Jan 2017

Traffic Density Estimation Via Kde And Nonlinear Ls, Mi̇kai̇l Erdem, Mehmet Kemal Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

With increasing population, the determination of traffic density becomes critical in managing urban city roads for safer driving and low carbon emissions. In this study, kernel density estimation is utilized in order to estimate traffic density more accurately when the speeds of vehicles are available for a given region. For the proposed approach, as a first step, the probability density function of the speed data is modeled by kernel density estimation. Then the speed centers from the density function are modeled as clusters. The cumulative distribution function of the speed data is then determined by Kolmogorov--Smirnov test, whose complexity is …

Accelerating The Solving Of Nonlinear Equations Using The Homotopy Method: Application On Finding The Operating Point Of Complex Circuits, Fathi Dhiabi, Mohamed Boumehraz Jan 2017

Accelerating The Solving Of Nonlinear Equations Using The Homotopy Method: Application On Finding The Operating Point Of Complex Circuits, Fathi Dhiabi, Mohamed Boumehraz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Analog circuits with nonlinear elements (e.g., diode, BJT, and CMOS) and integrated circuits are very complex systems. As a result, they are very difficult to analyze because of the need to generate a nonlinear equation system solution in order to do so. Solving nonlinear equations is still a challenging problem. Iterative methods, however, are frequently used to solve them. This paper describes a method that can be used to both accelerate the solving of nonlinear equations and find the operating point in various integrated circuits by construction of the global homotopy equation of the analog circuit. This is done by …

Case Study On Wavelet Choice Based On Statistical Image Quality Measures, Igor Vujovic, Ivica Kuzmanic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Surveillance applications are under many negative influences, which should be suppressed, because these negative influences result in incorrectness of the motion mask. Suppression of several conflicting requirements can be optimized by a multiobjective approach. This paper proposes a multiobjective approach to selection of wavelets based on two main objectives: statistical image quality measures and execution time. Execution time is a measure of wavelets complexity. Segmentation is the final goal in order to insure precise operation of any surveillance algorithm. This paper presents a case study considering one, two, three, and four goals for wavelet selection comparison. Different wavelets are found …

Temporal Preconditioners For Marching-On-In-Time-Based Time Domain Integral Equation Solvers, Hüseyi̇n Arda Ülkü

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Temporal preconditioners to stabilize the marching-on-in-time (MOT)-based time domain integral equation (TDIE) solvers are proposed. Exponentially decaying functions are used as temporal preconditioners and the proposed scheme is applied to analyze scattering from perfect electrically conducting objects using the second-order formulation. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated via numerical examples. It is shown that the temporal preconditioners stabilize the MOT system and the solution. In addition, the initial condition problem of TDIEs is investigated by extending the second-order formulation of the time domain electric field integral equation to the time domain magnetic and combined field integral equations.

A New Sequential Power Flow Algorithm For Ac/Dc Systems Including Independent Multiterminal Dc Subsystems, Faruk Yalçin, Uğur Ari̇foğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new algorithm based on the sequential method for power flow calculation in multiterminal AC/DC systems. The proposed approach differs from other similar studies in the literature by handling two main properties. Firstly, a real equivalent circuit model is considered for the under-load tap changer transformers (ULTCs) of DC converters for the first time in the literature. Hence, new DC equations are obtained. Thus, exact and accurate results can be obtained for practical applications using the proposed algorithm. Tap values adjustment effects of the ULTCs connected to DC converters are included into the Jacobian matrix instead of …

High-Voltage Isolated Multioutput Power Supply For Multilevel Converters, Amir Sepehr, Mehdi Saradarzadeh, Shahrokh Farhangi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Multilevel converters are one of the major choices for realizing high electric power conversion. The major feature of multilevel converter topologies is the need for a large number of switches, each of which requires a gate driver circuit and an isolated DC power supply. In this paper, a pragmatic concept of design and implementation of an isolated DC-to-DC converter for a high-voltage isolated application is introduced. More specifically, a multiple isolated output power supply based on the benefits of resonant converters is designed to prepare 36 double DC voltages for driving power semiconductor devices in a three-phase, seven-level cascaded H-bridge …

Using The Variable Width In A Planar Inductor On Kapton For Optimizing Its Performance, Hayet Kharbouch, Azzedine Hamid, Thierry Lebey, Vincent Bley, Leon Havez, Celine Combette Jan 2017

Using The Variable Width In A Planar Inductor On Kapton For Optimizing Its Performance, Hayet Kharbouch, Azzedine Hamid, Thierry Lebey, Vincent Bley, Leon Havez, Celine Combette

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we examine the design of planar inductors and consider an expansion of the conductor to reduce its resistance. An increase in the number of turns increases the proximity effect, capacitive coupling, and skin effect. The resulting effect will translate into an increase in the area occupied by the inductor and a decrease in the inductors' performances. In order to solve such difficulties, an alternative approach is to design tapered inductors. For the same electrical and geometrical characteristics, a tapered inductor occupies a larger area than a standard inductor. Our approach consists of designing a new concept regarding …

Discrete Design Optimization Of Distribution Transformers With Guaranteed Optimum Convergence Using The Cuckoo Search Algorithm, Levent Alhan, Nejat Yumuşak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Transformer design optimization methods presented in the literature rarely yield solutions directly applicable in production; the design engineer usually needs to convert the theoretical solution to a practical one. This problem is addressed in this paper, and a discrete transformer design optimization method is proposed that yields solutions with commercially available or productionally feasible dimensions, thus eliminating the need for further efforts of the design engineer to make the theoretical solution a feasible one. The cuckoo search, a nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm, is used as the optimization algorithm in this study, and it is shown that the guaranteed global optimum solution …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Breast and areola boundary detection and segmentation present the biggest challenge in breast segmentation from thermography images, as breast boundaries, especially in the upper quadrants of the breast, are nonexistent. Many segmentation approaches have been proposed for breast segmentation, such as active contours and snakes, circular Hough transforms, and live wires, but these methods often fail to achieve satisfactory results. With recent advances in image processing techniques, new segmentation concepts are being developed, such as random walkers, which have received high interest from the medical imaging community. In this study, 91 images acquired utilizing a FLIR A320 thermal camera are …

Minimizing Scheduling Overhead In Lre-Tl Real-Time Multiprocessor Scheduling Algorithm, Hitham Seddig Alhassan Alhussian, Mohamed Nordin Bin Zakaria, Fawnizu Azmadi Bin Hussin Jan 2017

Minimizing Scheduling Overhead In Lre-Tl Real-Time Multiprocessor Scheduling Algorithm, Hitham Seddig Alhassan Alhussian, Mohamed Nordin Bin Zakaria, Fawnizu Azmadi Bin Hussin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we present a modification of the local remaining execution-time and local time domain (LRE-TL) real-time multiprocessor scheduling algorithm, aimed at reducing the scheduling overhead in terms of task migrations. LRE-TL achieves optimality by employing the fairness rule at the end of each time slice in a fluid schedule model. LRE-TL makes scheduling decisions using two scheduling events. The bottom (B) event, which occurs when a task consumes its local utilization, has to be preempted in order to resume the execution of another task, if any, or to idle the processor if none exist. The critical (C) event …

Sotarm: Size Of Transaction-Based Association Rule Mining Algorithm, Asha Pandian, Jebarajan Thaveethu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Mining of association rules tries to identify the existence of promising and fruitful relations among the items present in a database. The basic a priori algorithm suffers from multiple database scans, and if the database is large, then the time taken for scanning and generation of candidates is also large. The proposed algorithm attempts to reduce the repeated scanning of the whole database. Using this algorithm, scanning time and also the generation of subitems that are not frequent can be reduced. The former can be done by sorting the transaction records in descending order based on the size of transaction …

Implementation Of Svc Based On Grey Theory And Fuzzy Logic To Improve Lvrt Capability Of Wind Distributed Generations, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Akbar Itami Jan 2017

Implementation Of Svc Based On Grey Theory And Fuzzy Logic To Improve Lvrt Capability Of Wind Distributed Generations, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Akbar Itami

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Due to the great absorption of reactive power after voltage drops caused by faults in network, the low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of squirrel cage induction generators (SCIGs) in wind farms is a great challenge. If a static VAR compensator (SVC) is installed at the point of common coupling (PCC) of a wind farm with a main network, it can improve the wind generation's LVRT capability with reactive power compensation. In the voltage control loop of a conventional SVC, the voltage actual value of the PCC is compared with the reference voltage value. This paper presents a method for implementation …

A Combined Approach Based On Fuzzy Ahp And Fuzzy Inference System To Rank Reviewers In Online Communities, Hossein Abbasimehr, Mohammadjafar Tarokh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Online product review communities allow users to share their ideas and opinions about various products and services. Although online reviews as user-generated content can be considered as an invaluable source of information for both consumers and firms, these reviews tend to be of very different quality. To tackle the problem of low quality reviews, we address reviewer credibility and propose an innovative framework. The framework comprises five critical phases for ranking reviewers in terms of credibility using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy inference system. To determine the weights of the features, a fuzzy AHP method was applied. …

Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) utilize an array of carbon nanotubes as the channel material instead of bulk silicon in the traditional MOSFET structure, which holds great promise for the future of integrated circuits. In this paper, a full adder cell based on a parallel design using CNFETs is presented. The main objective of designing this full adder cell is to reduce critical path delay in CNFET-based adder circuits. The proposed design positively affects speed and power consumption by shortening the data path. In order to evaluate the proposed design, several simulations were performed with different load capacitors, frequencies, and …

Calculation Of Creepage Discharge Safety Factors Against The Tangential Component Of Electric Fields In The Insulation Structure Of Power Transformers, Arsalan Hekmati Jan 2017

Calculation Of Creepage Discharge Safety Factors Against The Tangential Component Of Electric Fields In The Insulation Structure Of Power Transformers, Arsalan Hekmati

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Creepage discharges are a main cause of insulation damage in power transformers during repeated tests or during operation. In this paper, a hazardous region in the insulation structure of power transformers (the interface between solid and liquid insulation at the top edge of a high-voltage electrode) is considered, and the impact of a very important factor of the surface discharge initiation and propagation (the tangential component of the electric field) on the strength of the insulation structure is investigated in power transformers. Insulation system reliability against this tangential component is presented as a safety factor. Two methods based on cumulative …

Fractional-Order Controller Design In Frequency Domain Using An Improved Nonlinear Adaptive Seeker Optimization Algorithm, Mano Ranjan Kumar, Vishwa Deepak, Subhojit Ghosh Jan 2017

Fractional-Order Controller Design In Frequency Domain Using An Improved Nonlinear Adaptive Seeker Optimization Algorithm, Mano Ranjan Kumar, Vishwa Deepak, Subhojit Ghosh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Two nonlinear adaptive versions of the conventional seeker optimization algorithm (SOA) have been proposed for the design of fractional-order controllers using frequency domain specifications. The highly nonlinear and undetermined nature of equations resulting from controller design specifications rules out obtaining a closed-form solution. In this regard, the controller design task has been formulated as an optimization problem and solved using modified variants of the SOA. With the nonlinear adaptation of tuning parameters, the proposed variants of the SOA increase the probability of finding global optima along with improved convergence speed. This has been achieved by incorporating exponential weighting and chaotic …

Robust Optimal Stabilization Of Balance Systems With Parametric Variations, Salman Zaffar, Attaullah Memon Jan 2017

Robust Optimal Stabilization Of Balance Systems With Parametric Variations, Salman Zaffar, Attaullah Memon

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a method of robust optimal stabilization for balance systems such as rocket and missile systems, Segway human transportation systems, and inverted pendulum systems. Constant-gain controllers such as linear-quadratic regulators may not guarantee stability let alone optimality for balance systems affected by parametric variations. The robust stability and robust performance achieved through the proposed variable-gain controller are better than those of the linear-quadratic regulator. The proposed controller consists of two components, one of which is designed offline for nominal values of parametric variations and one of which is updated online for off-nominal values of parametric variations. A salient …
