Design Of A Double-Stator Linear Switched Reluctance Motor For Shunting Railway Channels, El Manaa Barhoumi, Mansour Hajji, Boujemaa Ben Salah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents the design and modeling of a double-stator linear switched reluctance motor for motorizing a railway channels' shunting system. The magnetic behavior of this actuator is nonlinear due to the saturation and nonlinear magnetization curves of the materials used in this actuator. For this reason, the electromagnetic quantities such as force, flux linkage, and inductance are calculated with the finite element method using the Maxwell tool. The obtained results are presented and discussed. In order to elaborate some control strategies, a new model for the proposed actuator, based on the flux and force characteristics, is validated by the …

Optimal Operation Management Of Microgrids Using The Point Estimate Method And Firefly Algorithm While Considering Uncertainty, Sirus Mohammadi, Babak Mozafari, Soodabeh Solimani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper analyzes the behavior of Hong's point estimate method to account for uncertainties in probabilistic energy management systems to optimize the operation of a microgrid (MG). These uncertainties may arise from different sources, such as the market prices, load demands, and electric power generation of wind farms and photovoltaic systems. Point estimate methods constitute a remarkable tool to handle stochastic power system problems because good results can be achieved using the same routines as those corresponding to deterministic problems, while keeping the computational burden low. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear constraint optimization problem to minimize the total …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The integration of a capacitor-commutated converter (CCC) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) (CCC-HVDC) and voltage source converter (VSC) HVDC (VSC-HVDC) is proposed in this paper to supply entirely passive AC networks. The key point of this integration is the flat characteristic of the DC voltage of the CCC-HVDC, which provides the condition for the VSC to connect to the CCC DC link via a current regulator. The advantages of the proposed combined infeeding system are the requirement of only one DC line, and better dynamic responses. The structure of the proposed infeeding system, as well as its control system, is studied. …

Design, Optimization, And Realization Of A Wire Antenna With A 25:1 Bandwidth Ratio For Terrestrial Communications, Korkut Yeği̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Wire antennas can be made wideband if the antenna is loaded with passive elements and connected to a lossless matching network. However, realization of the load component values and matching network can easily become impractical. In this study, using only a surface mount and standard component values, antenna loads and a matching network are optimized using genetic algorithms. The optimized design achieves a 25:1 bandwidth ratio, from 20 MHz to 500 MHz, with a maximum voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of 3.5 and minimum system gain of --5 dBi. The antenna system gain at azimuth is taken as the objective …

Utility companies in developing countries employ analog electrical meters to determine consumption and bill their customers accordingly. Obtaining an accurate reading is an expensive and time-consuming process. High consumption levels of water, energy, or gas are fined by the government; thus, it is necessary to develop tools that allow users to be informed about their consumption in real time. This paper proposes a new number recognition algorithm named the Hausdorff distance for meter reading (HD-MR). Experiments prove that HD-MR can achieve a 99.9% recognition rate, even when recognized numbers are under rotation. The maximum recognition time is 31 ms; hence, …

A Learning Method To Evaluate A Generation Company's Bidding Strategy In The Electricity Market, Shengjie Yang, Jiangang Yao Jan 2014

A Learning Method To Evaluate A Generation Company's Bidding Strategy In The Electricity Market, Shengjie Yang, Jiangang Yao

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In the electricity market, generation companies (GenCos) are usually faced with the problem of choosing a better bidding strategy. They often have to evaluate each possible strategy according to its potential reward. In a competitive market environment, the electricity price is stochastic and volatile, and the GenCo's mixed strategies also make the problem more complicated. In this paper, we model the market price with a Markov regime-switching model and propose the temporal difference learning method in the Markov decision process to approximate the expected reward over an infinite horizon. The simulations based on this method have achieved the evaluation of …

A Methodology For Memristance Calculation, Reşat Mutlu, Ertuğrul Karakulak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A memristor is a newly found fundamental circuit element whose behavior can be predicted using either the charge-dependent function called memristance or the flux-dependent function called memductance. Therefore, it is important to find the memristance or memductance function of a memristor. To the best of our knowledge, there is no methodology describing how to obtain the memristance function or memristor characteristic in the literature for this purpose as of yet. In this work, a methodology is suggested to find the memristance or memductance functions. The methodology suggests first doing several experiments with a memristor using a square-wave signal to acquire …

A Low-Memory Intensive Decoding Architecture For Double-Binary Convolutional Turbo Code, Ming Zhan, Liang Zhou, Jun Wu Jan 2014

A Low-Memory Intensive Decoding Architecture For Double-Binary Convolutional Turbo Code, Ming Zhan, Liang Zhou, Jun Wu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Memory accesses take a large part of the power consumption in the iterative decoding of double-binary convolutional turbo code (DB-CTC). To deal with this, a low-memory intensive decoding architecture is proposed for DB-CTC in this paper. The new scheme is based on an improved maximum a posteriori probability algorithm, where instead of storing all of the state metrics, only a part of these state metrics is stored in the state metrics cache (SMC), and the memory size of the SMC is thus reduced by 25%. Owing to a compare-select--recalculate processing (CSRP) module in the proposed decoding architecture, the unstored state …

M-Fdbscan: A Multicore Density-Based Uncertain Data Clustering Algorithm, Atakan Erdem, Taflan İmre Gündem

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In many data mining applications, we use a clustering algorithm on a large amount of uncertain data. In this paper, we adapt an uncertain data clustering algorithm called fast density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (FDBSCAN) to multicore systems in order to have fast processing. The new algorithm, which we call multicore FDBSCAN (M-FDBSCAN), splits the data domain into c rectangular regions, where c is the number of cores in the system. The FDBSCAN algorithm is then applied to each rectangular region simultaneously. After the clustering operation is completed, semiclusters that occur during splitting are detected and merged to …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In electrical distribution systems, it is possible to have a reliable system via a well-designed protective scheme. The allocation of protective devices is an important parameter in the design of a protective scheme. Different approaches to optimize the allocation of protective devices have been studied. Because of some uncertainties, it is not the best strategy to select an optimized solution in accordance with certain conditions. The availability of the protective devices seriously affects the reliability of electrical distribution systems. Furthermore, reduction of the investment in some designing processes leads to a decrease in the number of protective devices that will …

Abrupt And Incipient Fault Detection And Compensation For A 4-Tank System Benchmark, Pedram Hajiani, Javad Poshtan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Fault detection and compensation play a key role in enhancing the high demand for performance and security in technological systems. This paper proposes an active fault-tolerant control scheme that detects and compensates for actuator faults in a 4-tank system benchmark. The faults are modeled as a drastic gain loss in actuators (pumps), which could lead to a large loss in the nominal performance. The model-based approach uses a recursive least squares parameter estimation algorithm to form a fault detection and diagnosis subsystem and utilizes a parametric eigenstructure assignment method to reconfigure the state feedback controller. The designed controller is simulated …

New Design Of Intelligent Load Shedding Algorithm Based On Critical Line Overloads To Reduce Network Cascading Failure Risks, Mehrdad Majidi, Mohammad-Reza Aghamohammadi, Moein Manbachi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new algorithm for intelligent load shedding based on critical line overloads. This method can increase the efficiency for determining critical lines and sensitive loads. Hence, when critical lines expose an overload, the system will run an intelligent load shedding, which considerably curtails the sensitive loads of critical transmission lines. This can fully reduce the harmful risks of power system cascading failures that impose extensive losses to the economy of a country. For testing the accuracy and applicability of this technique, the IEEE 39-bus test system is applied as a standard case study.
