Pin-Wise Loading Optimization And Lattice–To-Core Coupling For Isotopic Management In Light Water Reactors, Hermilo Hernandez Noyola

Doctoral Dissertations

A generalized software capability has been developed for the pin-wise loading optimization of light water reactor (LWR) fuel lattices with the enhanced flexibility of control variables that characterize heterogeneous or blended target pins loaded with non-standard compositions, such as minor actinides (MAs). Furthermore, this study has developed the software coupling to evaluate the performance of optimized lattices outside their reflective boundary conditions and within the realistic three-dimensional core-wide environment of a LWR.

The illustration of the methodologies and software tools developed helps provide a deeper understanding of the behavior of optimized lattices within a full core environment. The practical applications …

Winslow Elliptic Smoothing Equations Extended To Apply To General Regions Of An Unstructured Mesh, James Steven Masters Dec 2010

Winslow Elliptic Smoothing Equations Extended To Apply To General Regions Of An Unstructured Mesh, James Steven Masters

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In any engineering endeavor, it is important to have the ability to efficiently and intelligently break up a region of interest in order to explore and investigate the interesting and dynamic aspects of the system enclosed in the region. In the field of fluid mechanics - and, in particular, computational fluid dynamics - this region breakup (known as discretization) has traditionally been done using structured meshes but, because of their flexibility with capturing real-world geometry, unstructured meshes are being increasingly utilized. Not surprisingly, techniques that have traditionally been reserved for structured meshes are migrating to the world of unstructured meshing …

Cotextual Android Education, James R. Reed

Master's Theses

With advances in mobile phone hardware, the demand for mobile applica- tions has risen drastically. This has resulted in mobile phones becoming a pop- ular new medium for application development. However, the body of knowledge for contextual examples and tutorials leaves much to be desired. As of January 2010, California Polytechnic State University has offered a mobile development class that teaches students how to write applications for phones running Google’s Android platform. This class aims at taking advantage of students’ current in- terest in mobile applications to teach them about difficult computer science topics. As a corollary, the class hopes …

Fully Anisotropic Split-Tree Adaptive Refinement Mesh Generation Using Tetrahedral Mesh Stitching, Vincent Charles Betro Aug 2010

Fully Anisotropic Split-Tree Adaptive Refinement Mesh Generation Using Tetrahedral Mesh Stitching, Vincent Charles Betro

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Due to the myriad of geometric topologies that modern computational fluid dynamicists desire to mesh and run solutions on, the need for a robust Cartesian Mesh Generation algorithm is paramount. Not only do Cartesian meshes require less elements and often help resolve flow features but they also allow the grid generator to have a great deal of control in so far as element aspect ratio, size, and gradation. Fully Anisotropic Split-Tree Adaptive Refinement (FASTAR) is a code that allows the user to exert a great deal of control and ultimately generate a valid, geometry conforming mesh. Due to the split-tree …

A Hybrid Method For Flows In Local Chemical Equilibrium And Nonequilibrium, Nicholas G. Currier Aug 2010

A Hybrid Method For Flows In Local Chemical Equilibrium And Nonequilibrium, Nicholas G. Currier

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The primary objective of this work is to develop a more efficient chemically active compressible Euler equation solver. Currently, a choice between the physical accuracy of a finite-rate solver or the computational efficiency of an equilibrium flow solver must be made. The number of species modeled continues to increase with available computational resources. A method of further leveraging the increase in computational power is desired. The hybrid chemistry scheme proposed here attempts to maintain the accuracy of finite-rate schemes while retaining some of the cost savings associated with equilibrium chemistry solvers. The method given uses a full finite-rate flux in …

Propagation Of Periodic Waves Using Wave Confinement, Paula Cysneiros Sanematsu Aug 2010

Propagation Of Periodic Waves Using Wave Confinement, Paula Cysneiros Sanematsu

Masters Theses

This thesis studies the behavior of the Eulerian scheme, with "Wave Confinement" (WC), when propagating periodic waves. WC is a recently developed method that was derived from the scheme "vorticity confinement" used in fluid mechanics, and it efficiently solves the linear wave equation. This new method is applicable for numerous simulations such as radio wave propagation, target detection, cell phone and satellite communications.

The WC scheme adds a nonlinear term to the discrete wave equation that adds stability with negative and positive diffusion, conserves integral quantities such as total amplitude and wave speed, and it allows wave propagation over long …

Ofdm Simulation In Matlab, Paul Guanming Lin Jun 2010

Ofdm Simulation In Matlab, Paul Guanming Lin

Electrical Engineering

The objective of this project is to demonstrate the concept and feasibility of an OFDM system, and investigate how its performance is changed by varying some of its major parameters. This objective is met by developing a MATLAB program to simulate a basic OFDM system. From the process of this development, the mechanism of an OFDM system can be studied; and with a completed MATLAB program, the characteristics of an OFDM system can be explored.

Molecular Simulations Of Adsorption And Diffusion In Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs), Ruichang Xiong May 2010

Molecular Simulations Of Adsorption And Diffusion In Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs), Ruichang Xiong

Doctoral Dissertations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of nanoporous materials that have received great interest since they were first synthesized in the late 1990s. Practical applications of MOFs are continuously being discovered as a better understanding of the properties of materials adsorbed within the nanopores of MOFs emerges. One such potential application is as a component of an explosive-sensing system. Another potential application is for hydrogen storage.

This work is focused on tailoring MOFs to adsorb/desorb the explosive, RDX. Classical grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamic (MD) simulations have been performed to calculate adsorption isotherms and self-diffusivities of …

Pretty Lights, Nicholas (Nick) Delmas, Matthew (Matt) Maniaci

Computer Engineering

Digital media players often include a visualization component that allows a user to watch a visualization synchronized to their music or videos. This project uses the visualization plugin API of an existing media playback program (WinAmp) but it displays its visuals using physical LED lights. Instead of outputting visuals to the computer screen, data is sent over USB to a micro controller that runs the LED lights. This project aims to give users a more visceral visual experience than traditional visualizations on the computer screen.

High Order Finite Elements For Lagrangian Computational Fluid Dynamics, Truman Everett Ellis Apr 2010

High Order Finite Elements For Lagrangian Computational Fluid Dynamics, Truman Everett Ellis

Master's Theses

A general finite element method is presented to solve the Euler equations in a Lagrangian reference frame. This FEM framework allows for separate arbitrarily high order representation of kinematic and thermodynamic variables. An accompanying hydrodynamics code written in Matlab is presented as a test-bed to experiment with various basis function choices. A wide range of basis function pairs are postulated and a few choices are developed further, including the bi-quadratic Q2-Q1d and Q2-Q2d elements. These are compared with a corresponding pair of low order bi-linear elements, traditional Q1-Q0 and sub-zonal pressure Q1-Q1d. Several test problems are considered including static convergence …

Determining The Utility Of Technology For Education, Brian Spencer Dillon Apr 2010

Determining The Utility Of Technology For Education, Brian Spencer Dillon

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There is a substantial debate concerning the place of technology in education. This debate has been going on over every technology introduced through at least three millennia although the modern version takes place in journal articles. Technology, in the general sense, is already in the educational arena 1n ways which have become so commonplace that we hardly question them today. More modern technologies, however, meet perpetual resistance in achieving their potential. This paper calls into question the most recent trend in research and suggests a new research paradigm which focuses not only on student achievement, but on a variety of …
