In this paper, we revisit time-domain adjoint sensitivity with a circuit theoretic approach and an efficient solution is clearly stated in terms of device level. Key is the linearization of the energy storage elements (e.g., capacitance and inductance) and nonlinear memoryless elements (e.g., MOS, BJT DC characteristics) at each time step. Due to the finite precision of computation, numerical errors that accumulate across timesteps can arise in nonlinear elements.

Coercivity is a characteristic property of the bilinear term in a weak form of a partial differential equation in both infinite space and the corresponding finite space utilized by a numerical scheme. An investigation into using attention mechanisms for better feature extraction in wildfire spread prediction models. This research examines the U-net architecture to achieve image segmentation, a process that partitions images by classifying pixels into one of two classes. The deep learning models explored in this research integrate modern deep learning architectures, and techniques used to optimize them. The models are trained on 12 distinct observational variables derived from the Google Earth Engine catalog. Evaluation is conducted with accuracy, Dice coefficient score, ROC-AUC, and F1-score. Quantum-mechanical calculations using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation were employed to investigate the effects dopants have on the uranium dioxide (UO2) structure. Uraninite is a common U4+ mineral in the Earth's crust and an important material used to produce energy and medical isotopes. When used judiciously, programming can empower people to accomplish what might be impossible or difficult with traditional methods. Unfortunately, students, especially non-CS majors, frequently have trouble while learning to program. This work reports on the challenges and opportunities faced by Physical Chemistry (PChem) students at Cal Poly, SLO as they learn to program in MATLAB. We assessed the PChem students through a multiple-choice concept inventory, as well as through “think-aloud” interviews. Hence, such methods are one way to obtain the gradient necessary in locally optimizing a dynamical system’s time-averaged behavior over those design parameters. This work focuses on evaluating different modeling approaches and model parameters for thermoplastic AM, with the goal of informing more efficient and effective modeling approaches. First, different modeling approaches were tested and compared to experiments. From this it was found that all three of the modeling approaches provide comparable results and provide similar results to experiments. Then one of the modeling approaches was tested on large scale geometries, and it was found that the model results matched experiments closely. Quantitative reaction-diffusion models are critical for the development of high-resolution lithographic processes based on chemically amplified resists (CARs). CARs consist of a glassy polymer resin with a photoacid generator. Patterns are formed through a coupled reaction-diffusion process. It is known that reaction kinetics is controlled by the slow diffusion of acid-anion pairs (catalysts), and catalyst diffusion lengths partly control the pattern resolution and uniformity. Speaker identification in noisy audio recordings, specifically those from collaborative learning environments, can be extremely challenging. There is a need to identify individual students talking in small groups from other students talking at the same time. To solve the problem, we assume the use of a single microphone per student group without any access to previous large datasets for training.

The combination of Bluetooth Low energy and E-Ink displays allow for a low energy wire-less display. The application of this technology is far reaching especially given how the Bluetooth Low Energy specification can be extended. This paper proposes an extension to this specification specifically for inventory tracking. This extension combined with the low energy E-Ink display results in a smart label that can keep track of additional meta data and inventory counts for physical inventory. In this dissertation, a novel finite-element methodology called “embedded imperfections” is proposed and employed for computationally simulating various types of deformation instabilities observed in film-substrate structures subjected to mechanical loading.
