This research develops a novel experiment using flattened Brazilian disks under confining pressure with concurrent permeability measurements and acoustic emission monitoring. The purpose of this work is to correlate damage and permeability in brittle geo-materials. Two series of tests are performed on concrete and one series on tuff, under a range of confining stresses between 2.76 and 13.79 MPa. Tests were continued beyond peak stress conditions, capturing data in the post-peak region. Earth dams and levees are constructed and retrofitted nowadays using the same materials that were used in the past, clays and sands. Despite the current advances in engineering, designing and constructing these critical infrastructure, earthen dams and levees continue to suffer from the same challenges over the years. The article presents the results of thermal analysis of samples of minerals – calcite (limestone), dolomite, magnesite and quartz, as well as their mixtures in the host rock of uranium ore. It has been established that thermal decomposition (dissociation) of calcite occurs in one stage at a temperature of 870°C, magnesite - in one stage at 6500° C, and dolomite - in two stages at 7300°C and at 9100°C. Thermal analysis of a sample of uranium ore showed that, as host rocks, it contains calcite, dolomite, and quartz.

Drilled shafts are conventionally used as foundations for sound walls. However, steel piles can provide faster installation and immediate utilization. The purpose of this research program is to evaluate a novel pile concept which comprises an H-pile modified to better resist typical load patterns faced by sound wall piles including lateral force and moment from wind and uplift force from adfreeze. Shallow wind turbine foundations are designed based on investigations of the ultimate, serviceability and fatigue limit states. The serviceability limit state design approaches in particular are based on simple isotropic elastic half-space analyses that ignore coupling between loading directions, and soil non-linearity and elastic anisotropy. This series of studies explores the liquefaction behaviour of cohesionless mine tailings and a natural sand and examines the effectiveness of a bio-mediated treatment for the mitigation of liquefaction. The first study investigates the flow liquefaction failure of the Fundão tailings dam (2015) by analytically assessing the stability of the breached abutment, accounting for the specific triggering mechanism and subsequent strength loss that led to its collapse. This paper presents research to implement a cracking resistance test to further modify the Superpave volumetric asphalt mixture design method in Arkansas. The Illinois Flexibility Index Test (I-FIT) was the test chosen to analyze for this research.
