Shaking Table Test Study On The Influence Of Seismic History On Liquefaction Resistance Of Soils At Different Depths, Xiao-Lei Wang, Li-Teng Liu, Run Liu, Li-Bo Liu, Lin Dong, Hai Ren

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Earthquake-induced liquefaction can cause significant damage to geotechnical structures, and the aftershocks accompanying the earthquakes may cause the sandy soils to liquefy again. To investigate the effect of free-field subsurface seismic history on the liquefaction resistance of saturated sandy soils at various depths, a series of shaking table tests was designed and conducted. Four shaking events with different accelerations, subdivided into seven smaller events, were input to the sandy soil in the tests. The excess pore pressure ratio, acceleration response, and soil settlement were calculated and compared for each vibration event to investigate the variation laws of soil liquefaction resistance …

Characteristics Of The Cumulative Plastic Deformation And Pore Water Pressure Of Saturated Sand Under Cyclic Intermittent Loading, Qi Yang, Xiao-Ya Wang, Ru-Song Nie, Chen Chen, Yuan-Zheng Chen, Fang Xu Oct 2023

Characteristics Of The Cumulative Plastic Deformation And Pore Water Pressure Of Saturated Sand Under Cyclic Intermittent Loading, Qi Yang, Xiao-Ya Wang, Ru-Song Nie, Chen Chen, Yuan-Zheng Chen, Fang Xu

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The long-term train loads can result in problems such as strength attenuation, excessive cumulative settlement and even subsidence in sandy soil foundations and filling materials, which can jeopardize train operation safety. To understand the mechanism of the disease, it is necessary to explore the cumulative plastic deformation and pore water pressure characteristics of saturated sand under intermittent loading. Therefore, dynamic triaxial tests under continuous and intermittent loading with different dynamic amplitudes and confining pressures were performed. The test results showed that: (1) The cumulative plastic deformation-loading cycle curve of saturated sand exhibited a “zigzag” pattern. The intermittent effect led to …

Experimental Study On Liquefaction Resistance Characteristics Of Fine-Grained Coralline Soils, Ping-Shan Chen, Wei-Qing Lü, Xiao-Cong Liang, Hong-Xing Zhou, Jing Wang, Jia-Jun Ma Apr 2023

Experimental Study On Liquefaction Resistance Characteristics Of Fine-Grained Coralline Soils, Ping-Shan Chen, Wei-Qing Lü, Xiao-Cong Liang, Hong-Xing Zhou, Jing Wang, Jia-Jun Ma

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Coralline soils are the emerging preferred geomaterial for island-reef engineering and harbor engineering in tropical regions, and wide gradation is the main feature of their structural composition. The liquefaction resistance of coralline soils is gaining attention due to the high seismic risk of related engineering projects. In order to investigate the liquefaction resistance of coralline soils containing fine grains, the saturated undrained dynamic strengths of three groups of representative graded samples with designed relative compaction of 0.4–0.8 and two groups of samples without fine grains were measured by large-scale dynamic triaxial liquefaction test based on an actual site of coralline …

Influence Of Particle Size Distribution And Initial Dry Density On The Characteristics Of Subgrade Mud Pumping, Yu Ding, Yu Jia, Xuan Wang, Jia-Sheng Zhang, Xiao-Bin Chen, Hao Luo, Yu Zhang Nov 2022

Influence Of Particle Size Distribution And Initial Dry Density On The Characteristics Of Subgrade Mud Pumping, Yu Ding, Yu Jia, Xuan Wang, Jia-Sheng Zhang, Xiao-Bin Chen, Hao Luo, Yu Zhang

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The subgrade mud pumping of heavy-haul railway is widespread and harmful, which seriously affects the stability of tracks and the safety of train operation. The properties of railway subgrade soil, such as the particle gradation, the void ratio, have a significant impact on the characteristics of subgrade mud pumping under train load. In this study, a series of remolded samples consisting of silty clay and different content of Kaolin was subjected to mud pumping tests with a self-developed test model. The influence of varying particle gradations (Kaolin content) and initial dry densities (void ratio) on axial strain, excess pore water …

Effects Of Cyclic Loading Directions On Liquefaction Characteristics Of Saturated Coral Sand, Kang Liu, Guo-Xing Chen, Qi Wu, Wei-Jia Ma, You Qin Nov 2021

Effects Of Cyclic Loading Directions On Liquefaction Characteristics Of Saturated Coral Sand, Kang Liu, Guo-Xing Chen, Qi Wu, Wei-Jia Ma, You Qin

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The large scale construction of both military and civil infrastructures located in Nansha reefs and offshore marine areas, South China Sea, has raised the seismic safety a challenging issue for the projects in the region. The influences of fines content (FC) on the liquefaction characteristics of saturated terrestrial quartz sands have been extensively studied, but the corresponding research on saturated coral sands in reclaimed coral islands is less involved. Using the GDS hollow cylinder torsion shear apparatus, a series of isotropically consolidated undrained cyclic tests have been performed on saturated coral sand sampled from the Nansha Islands, South China Sea. …

Study On Bearing Capacity Of Permeable Pipe Pile By Field Optical Fiber Monitoring, Jing Wang, Tao Xiao, Hong-Hu Zhu, Guo-Xiong Mei, Zheng-Yuan Liu, Guang-Qing Wei Nov 2021

Study On Bearing Capacity Of Permeable Pipe Pile By Field Optical Fiber Monitoring, Jing Wang, Tao Xiao, Hong-Hu Zhu, Guo-Xiong Mei, Zheng-Yuan Liu, Guang-Qing Wei

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Permeable pipe piles are set in the soft soil foundation to accelerate the dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure induced by pile driving and then to accelerate the consolidation of soil around the pile. At present, there are many studies, including model tests and numerical simulation, on the bearing capacity and permeability performance of permeable pipe piles. However, few field tests have been conducted to deeply study the time effect of bearing capacity and load transfer law of permeable pipe piles. Based on the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology, the static load tests were carried out to study the …

Seismic Response Of Pile-Soil-Structure In Coral Sand Foundation Under Different Earthquake Intensities, Qi Wu, Xuan-Ming Ding, Zhi-Xiong Chen, Yu-Min Chen, Yu Peng Sep 2020

Seismic Response Of Pile-Soil-Structure In Coral Sand Foundation Under Different Earthquake Intensities, Qi Wu, Xuan-Ming Ding, Zhi-Xiong Chen, Yu-Min Chen, Yu Peng

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The dynamic field response to earthquake in the coral sand is affected by its special engineering properties. In order to reveal the seismic response characteristics of the pile-soil-superstructure in the coral sand site, the shaking table tests of pile groups with three-storey frame structure in coral sand under different earthquake intensities are carried out. The dynamic responses to soil and structure are analyzed and compared with those in the liquefied quartz sand of Fujian. The results show that the excess pore water pressure ratios in both coral and quartz sands are far less than 1 under 0.1g seismic intensity, demonstrating …
