Faced with limited financial resources, pavement engineers constantly seek more durable and economical technologies for road preservations and rehabilitations. Consequently, there have been many efforts to study resurfacing strategies, including various types of sealing for local roads. Among different sealing methodologies, Otta seal is a technique that has not yet been sufficiently studied in the U.S.A. For this investigation, the first Otta seal site in the state of Iowa was constructed using a double-layer Otta seal design over 6.4 km of cracked asphalt pavement. Otta seal design and construction details are documented and discussed, and test sections using various aggregates …

Highway administrators, engineers, and researchers often face problems for which information already exists, either in documented form or as undocumented experience and practice. This information may be fragmented, scattered, and unevaluated. As a consequence, full knowledge of what has been learned about a problem may not be brought to bear on its solution. Costly research findings may go unused, valuable experience may be overlooked, and due consideration may not be given to recommended practices for solving or alleviating the problem. There is information on nearly every subject of concern to highway administrators and engineers. Much of it derives from research …

Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.
Development Of Kansas Guardrail To Bridgerail Transition Designs Using Barrier Vii, Christopher Tuan, Edward Post, Syed Atuallah, J. Brewer
Development Of Kansas Guardrail To Bridgerail Transition Designs Using Barrier Vii, Christopher Tuan, Edward Post, Syed Atuallah, J. Brewer
Christopher Y. Tuan
BARRIER VII computer code was used to evaluate the dynamic performance of five Kansas guardrail-to-bridgerail transition designs. The simulation results were compared with those of two FHWA-approved transition designs. The test vehicle model was a 4,500-lb, 1977 Plymouth impacting the barriers at 60 mph with an approach angle of 25 deg. The vehicle-crushing properties and guardrail-post stiffness had been validated using full-scale vehicle crash test data before the simulations were conducted. A methodology for wheel-snagging prediction was also proposed and validated against available test data. It was shown that reliable simulation results could be obtained if the input parameters for …

In 2003 the Indiana Department of Transportation executed an ambitious interstate reconstruction project in Indianapolis, named Hyperfix. This project completely closed the I-65/70 section during reconstruction, on which approximately 250,000 vehicles travel daily. Due to the scope and risk involved, an extensive amount of planning, coordination, and cooperation occurred. The main section was rebuilt during the total closure phase, which lasted 55 days. The total closure approach had never been performed before by INDOT on such a high volume artery in a downtown metropolitan area. This present study analyzed the project and its impact on the Indianapolis area. The report …
Sediment Control At Water Intakes Along Sand Bed Rivers, Fred L. Ogden
Sediment Control At Water Intakes Along Sand Bed Rivers, Fred L. Ogden
Fred L. Ogden
Results from five physical hydraulic model studies of riverside water intakes situated along the Missouri River reach between Sioux City, Iowa, and St. Louis, Missouri, are presented. Movable-bed, undistorted Froude-scale models are used to determine the effectiveness of structural modifications in the vicinity of the intake to limit the influx of bed-load sediments. Solutions developed in each case include a series of submerged flow-turning vanes located on the riverward side of the intake. A sediment-barrier wall between the vanes and intake ...
