The provisions of Australian Standard AS 1210-1989 for design and detailing of unfired pressure vessels can be applied to commonly encountered design situations where the shells have small openings. The technique of finite element analysis is a convenient and powerful tool for the purpose of computational stress analysis when the design requirements are such that either the openings are large, or where concentrated loads and/or thermal movements are present. This paper provides a summary of one such practical design of a pressure vessel.
