Three-Dimensional Stability Limit Analysis Of Cracked Loess Slopes, Xue-Liang Zhu, Sheng-Jun Shao, Xiao-Jun Shen, Shuai Shao, Xiao-Kang Liu

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The development of vertical cracks in loess slopes often affects slope stability. Compared with the plane strain mechanism, the slope stability analysis under the three-dimensional (3D) failure mechanism is closer to the actual slope instability. Based on the upper bound method of plastic limit analysis, different failure mechanisms (face failure, toe failure and base failure) of 3D loess slope with pre-existing cracks are considered, the energy balance equation and its dimensionless critical height expression γH/c are established, and the upper bound solution of critical height is obtained by random search method. The effects of constraint width, slope angle, internal friction …

Field Model Test On Failure Mechanism Of Artificial Cut-Slope Rainfall In Southern Jiangxi, Li Wang, Gao Li, Yong Chen, Jian-Min Tan, Shi-Mei Wang, Fei Guo

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Geological disasters such as landslides occur frequently in southern Jiangxi, mostly induced by rainfall and artificial slope cutting. Physical model tests, especially field model tests, are considered effective to reveal the mechanism of landslides. The case on a cutting slope featured with weathered metamorphic rock in southern Jiangxi is investigated, in which a self-designed rainfall simulation system is applied. The alignment of field instrumentation includes four boreholes for measuring water content as well as pore pressure and two monitoring points for displacement. An artificial rainfall was carried out on the site. The ground response in terms of water content of …

Effect Of Sensor Calibration On Moment Tensor Analysis Of Granite Uniaxial Compression, Yi Ren, Shun-Chuan Wu, Yong-Tao Gao, Yi-Xiong Gan Jun 2021

Effect Of Sensor Calibration On Moment Tensor Analysis Of Granite Uniaxial Compression, Yi Ren, Shun-Chuan Wu, Yong-Tao Gao, Yi-Xiong Gan

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Moment tensor inversion theory is an effective method to study the rock failure mechanism. However, the inversion results are prone to large errors, which can mislead the understanding of fracture mechanism. In order to achieve a better understanding of the generation process and the mechanism of the rock macro-fracture surface, we perform a location analysis of source events based on the uniaxial compression test of a granite sample, with the help of ultrasonic testing and acoustic emission monitoring. The events near the macro-fracture with small location errors are selected for moment tensor inversion. Then, we use the network calibration method …

Tunnel Face Stability Analysis By The Upper-Bound Finite Element Method With Rigid Translatory Moving Element In Heterogeneous Clay, Feng Yang, Shi-Hua He, Yao-Jie Wu, Li-Yan Ji, Jing-Jing Luo, Jun-Sheng Yang Sep 2020

Tunnel Face Stability Analysis By The Upper-Bound Finite Element Method With Rigid Translatory Moving Element In Heterogeneous Clay, Feng Yang, Shi-Hua He, Yao-Jie Wu, Li-Yan Ji, Jing-Jing Luo, Jun-Sheng Yang

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The upper-bound finite element method with rigid translatory moving elements (UBFEM-RTME) is further improved to optimise its suitability for analysing the stability in heterogeneous clay. The method is applied to investigate the stability of the tunnel face in undrained clay layer subjected to surface surcharge. The variation of stability load ?s /cu0 and the morphological characteristics and discipline of the effective discontinuities mechanism are obtained for various combinations of dimensionless buried depth ratio C/D, dimensionless gravity parameter ?D/cu0 and the heterogeneous parameter ?D/cu0. The results reveal that C/D and ?D/cu0 have a significant effect on ?s /cu0 and failure mechanism. …
