This poster session is held Friday, April 19, 4:45-6:15pm, with food served, in the Reed Hall of Science Tech Center.

The capstone engineering senior design projects at Olivet Nazarene University involve interdisciplinary engineering teams completing real-life projects sponsored by companies, mission organizations, and professional society competitions. The engineering first-year design projects at Olivet Nazarene University involve interdisciplinary engineering teams proposing product improvement designs, using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Posters for both the senior and freshman engineering design projects will be presented during this poster session.

Hocking Hills Retreat Center located in Logan, Ohio tasked a senior engineering design group with the creation of a high and low ropes adventure course. The goal of this course is to increase the number of visitors to the retreat center. The course was designed to feature a kid’s area; a teamwork section; and beginner, intermediate, and expert courses. All course elements range from ten to thirty feet in elevation to allow for a variety of difficulty levels. The course has been modeled using both AutoCAD and Revit software. The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) hosts an annual competition in which students compete to design and fabricate a structural steel bridge. This year, four senior civil engineering majors are representing Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) to fulfill their capstone project requirement for the engineering department. The purpose of this project is to develop relationships between students and professionals while acquiring critical thinking skills. Through sponsor engagement, ONU’s team has developed a 3 ft-wide bridge that spans 20 ft and successfully holds up to 2,500 lbs of live load and 50 lbs of lateral load. Current research on living and working spaces continues to strive to identify the most energy-efficient methods for heating and cooling, and many novel technologies have emerged from the research. One of the most promising, and the topic of this quantitative analysis, is the retrofitting of phase change materials (PCMs) into the walls of structures. Research has shown positive results, such as a reduced transfer of heat through walls when PCMs are retrofitted into wall construction. The city of Watseka desires to improve thier downtown area where most shops and businesses are located. One of the ways they intend to do this is by implementing solar powered pedestrian walkway lighting along the major downtown walkways, the goal of this is to attract more businesses to the town. This will also increase revenue for the town, create a more welcoming atmosphere, and provide more jobs for the residents of Watseka.

Our task as a senior design group is to redesign the Wanda Kendall Elementary School in the City of Watseka Illinois. The school is currently used for second through fourth grade. The proposed redesign involves expanding the campus in order to be used for preschool-fifth grade students. This involves: a new, expanded or relocated parking lot with a bus lane, new classrooms, a gymnasium, cafeteria, tornado shelter, performing arts center, sufficient classroom sizes and hallways. The city has a vision of the new school being not only for students but for the community.

The project’s purpose is to provide a solution for farming tilapia. The goal of this design project was to build effective steel storage racks for Nucor Steel Kankakee. The important criteria that the design team needed to meet was that the rack was adjustable, could fit all of the manufactured products that Nucor makes, and could fit various lengths of product. Nucor needs a new rack system because their current process makes the shipping process very inefficient.

The village of Watseka, Illinois has experienced several 100-year floods over a short period of time and needs a solution to solve its flooding problem. The goal of the project is to come up with multiple solutions that could reduce flooding. All designs were intended to ensure that the wastewater treatment plant stays operational during flood conditions. To do so, analysis of the wastewater treatment plant was completed. Then, designs that focused on reducing river flood stages were analyzed. By preventing the river from reaching and cresting at it’s flood stage, the town’s risk of flooding is greatly reduced.

Including the construction of new buildings and the increasing population of faculty and students, this growth has created a need for more parking space. In this past semester our team has been working to design a solution to this issue. We have decided to design a three-story parking garage spanning the entire parking lot east of Centennial Chapel. The Millipore Sigma-Kankakee Site uses high volumes of water for many operations. One operation utilizes approximately 3600 L of water per batch every couple days and more than 3.8MM liters of water per year. The water is utilized as a component of the buffer washes used in the extraction process for cholesterol that involves various other components such as silica and ions such as sodium, sulfur, and phosphate. The washes that go through the process involve these components and large amounts of water that are then drained out of the facility. This volume is roughly 7% of the site's total …
