Utilizing Waste Latex Paint Toward Improving The Performance Of Concrete, Mohamed Leithy, Eslam Gomaa, Ahmed A. Gheni, Mohamed Elgawady

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, incorporating the waste latex paint (WLP) into the conventional concrete as a partial replacement of sand to improve its durability was investigated. The fresh and hardened characterizations, in addition to the durability of concrete, were examined. The slump test was used to evaluate the fresh properties, while the hardened properties were evaluated through the volume of voids and absorption rate, in addition to the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths tests. The durability performance was evaluated by the surface resistivity, bulk electrical resistivity, as well as freeze and thaw resistance tests. The results showed a reduction in …

Designs Of Abrasion Resistant And Durable Concrete Pavements Made With Scms For Cold Climates, Diane Murph, Jun Liu, Jenny Liu Jun 2022

Designs Of Abrasion Resistant And Durable Concrete Pavements Made With Scms For Cold Climates, Diane Murph, Jun Liu, Jenny Liu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rutting from studded tire wear is a typical pavement distress in cold climates such as that of Alaska and other northern states. Current state-of-the-art advancements in material technology and concrete pavement design have allowed for implementation of improved materials and concrete pavement sections that are more resistant to rutting. The addition of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) has been identified as one effective way to produce concrete pavements with better abrasion resistance. The objective of this study was to identify and develop concrete pavement mix designs containing SCMs that can provide excellent abrasion resistance and durability to address rutting from studded …

Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bar Investigation: Long-Term In-Situ Durability And Bond Strength Assessment In Conventional And Sustainable Concrete, Ali Fadhil Al-Khafaji Jan 2021

Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bar Investigation: Long-Term In-Situ Durability And Bond Strength Assessment In Conventional And Sustainable Concrete, Ali Fadhil Al-Khafaji

Doctoral Dissertations

"Corrosion of steel reinforcement and carbon dioxide emissions are two major global problems. Different methods, techniques, and materials have been implemented to mitigate these problems. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar presents itself as a solid alternative to replace conventional steel reinforcement owing to its fantastic features in resisting corrosion. Its demand is progressively increasing. Cement-based concrete, on the other hand, is not eco-friendly due to the excessive amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions yielded from its cement production. One of the alternatives used to mitigate the use of cement in concrete is fly ash. Fly ash is considered …

Influence Of Pumping Parameters On The Freeze-Thaw And Scaling Resistance Of Highly Workable Concrete, Alexandra Nicole Wehar Jan 2019

Influence Of Pumping Parameters On The Freeze-Thaw And Scaling Resistance Of Highly Workable Concrete, Alexandra Nicole Wehar

Masters Theses

“Over the past 60 years, pumping concrete has gained popularity due to the economic and technical benefits that typically accompanies it. However, boom configuration and flow rate can adversely affect freeze-thaw and scaling resistance of concrete due to the effects of pressure on the air-void system. Therefore, the objective of this research is to assess the influence of different pumping parameters on the durability of hardened self-consolidating concrete. Self-consolidating, flowable, and conventional concrete mixtures were tested during large scale pumping experiments positioning the pump boom in an “A” and a flat shape as well as using different pumping speeds. In …

Behavior Of Eb Frp Masonry Bond Under Service Temperature, Zuhair Al-Aljaberi, John J. Myers, K. Chandrashekhara Jan 2018

Behavior Of Eb Frp Masonry Bond Under Service Temperature, Zuhair Al-Aljaberi, John J. Myers, K. Chandrashekhara

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The interest in advanced composites in repairing and strengthening infrastructure systems has considerably increased, especially as the application externally bonded (EB) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has become more well established. Previous research on bond behavior has focused on impact of durability by considering exposure to harsh environmental conditions and testing the specimens after exposure, rather than testing bond performance during exposure. The influence of directly applying temperature on bond behavior represents an open topic that needs to be investigated in more detail. This study is one of the first studies to investigate the bond behavior when the composite is subjected …

Rehabilitation And Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Members Using A Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix Composite, Zena Riyadh Aljazaeri Jan 2016

Rehabilitation And Strengthening Of Reinforced Concrete Members Using A Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix Composite, Zena Riyadh Aljazaeri

Doctoral Dissertations

“Externally bonded fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) for structural members was tested and evaluated as a new class of composite material for repairing and strengthening infrastructures. In comparison with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, FRCM composite has a superior high temperature resistance and great compatibility with concrete substrates. Experimental investigation is ongoing in the United States to evaluate the structural and durability performance of FRCM composite to be implemented in field applications. This experimental program consisted of testing 12 strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams to study the fatigue and flexure performance under environmental exposure and sustained stress, 10 strengthened RC …

Effects Of High Volume Fly Ash And Powder Activators On Plastic And Hardened Concrete Properties, Drew Alexander Davis Jan 2012

Effects Of High Volume Fly Ash And Powder Activators On Plastic And Hardened Concrete Properties, Drew Alexander Davis

Masters Theses

This study was performed to examine the effects of high volumes of Class C fly ash modified by powder activators upon the plastic and hardened properties of concrete. In a companion study, five Missouri area cements and five Class C fly ashes were examined for incompatibilities, with the most and least reactive combinations being scaled up to full scale concrete testing. Two baseline concrete mixtures were examined, the only difference in mixtures being the sources of portland cement and fly ash. Fly ash replacement was examined at 50% and 70% replacement (by total cementitious mass). Three powder activators were used …

Effects Of Accelerated Weathering On Architectural Laminated Glass In A Windstorm Environment, Richard A. Behr, Joseph E. Minor, Paul A. Kremer Jan 1996

Effects Of Accelerated Weathering On Architectural Laminated Glass In A Windstorm Environment, Richard A. Behr, Joseph E. Minor, Paul A. Kremer

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An experimental study was conducted to assess the serviceability and ultimate limit state behavior of a fully glazed architectural laminated glass system under accelerated weathering conditions. Glazed specimens included heat-strengthened laminated glass with a low-emissivity, metallic solar coating on one glass surface next to the polyvinyl butyral interlayer. The laminated glass units were anchored to the aluminum curtain wall frame with a perimeter anchor bead of medium-modulus structural silicone sealant. Accelerated weathering was performed in a manner similar to the provisions of ASTM E773-88 and E774-92. All specimens (weathered and unweathered) were then subjected to a severe windstorm simulation test, …
