Load Test Study Of Bearing Characteristics Of Reinforced Soil Abutments, Xiao Zhang, Chao Xu, Qiu-Shen Wang, Wei-Cheng Wu Apr 2021

Load Test Study Of Bearing Characteristics Of Reinforced Soil Abutments, Xiao Zhang, Chao Xu, Qiu-Shen Wang, Wei-Cheng Wu

Rock and Soil Mechanics

As a bearing structure, the reinforced soil abutment has attracted much attention for its bearing capacity and its influencing factors. Taking the Bowman bridge as the engineering prototype, this paper studies the bearing capacity of the reinforced soil flexible abutment by the scale model test. In the experimental study, three groups of load tests of the reinforced soil flexible abutment were set up, which uses the geotextile as the reinforcement material. This paper mainly studies the influence of bridge base position on the bearing capacity of the abutment. Test results show that the setback is an important factor affecting the …

Full-Scale Field Study Of A Geogrid-Reinforced Unpaved Road System, Abdalla El Tawati Feb 2021

Full-Scale Field Study Of A Geogrid-Reinforced Unpaved Road System, Abdalla El Tawati

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Geogrids are widely used to improve the performance of unpaved roads constructed over weak subgrade. However, the behavior of geogrids under traffic loads and their reinforcing mechanisms, as well as the resulting benefits to the roadway performance are not well understood. A full-scale field study was conducted to quantify the effectiveness of geogrids in unpaved roads, evaluate their reinforcing mechanism, and identify which geogrid properties are most directly related to performance improvement. Ten full-scale unpaved road test sections were constructed with varying relevant parameters including geogrid aperture shape, geogrid tensile modulus, and thickness of the base course layer. Five of …

Experimental Study On Repeatedly Loaded Foundation Soil Strengthened By Wraparound Geosynthetic Reinforcement Technique, Muhammad Nouman Amjad Raja, Sanjay K. Shukla Jan 2021

Experimental Study On Repeatedly Loaded Foundation Soil Strengthened By Wraparound Geosynthetic Reinforcement Technique, Muhammad Nouman Amjad Raja, Sanjay K. Shukla

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In the recent past, the potential benefits of wraparound geosynthetic reinforcement technique for constructing the reinforced soil foundations have been reported. This paper presents the experimental study on the behaviour of model strip footing resting on sandy soil bed reinforced with geosynthetic in wraparound and planar forms under monotonic and repeated loadings. The geosynthetic layers were laid according to the reinforcement ratio to minimise the scale effect. It is found that for the same amount of reinforcement material, the wraparound reinforced model resulted in less settlement in comparison to planar reinforced models. The efficiency of wraparound reinforced model increased with …
