A Simplified Algorithm For Predicting Creep Settlement Of High Fill Based On Modified Power Law Model, Jian Huang, Pu-Rong De, Yang-Ping Yao, Ren Peng, Ji-Lin Qi

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The creep settlement dominates the long-term deformation of high fill foundation after construction and cannot be ignored. The reliable prediction of creep settlement provides an important guideline for judging whether settlement is stable and arranging subsequent construction. The modification of the traditional power law model for predicting the one-dimensional creep deformation of soil is proposed, which can describe the one dimensional creep deformation of clay, sand and soil-rock mixture. The modified model satisfies the requirement that the growth of the creep deformation has an asymptote with respect to time; that is to say, the creep deformation grows continually and approaches …

Evaluation Of The Geotechnical And Foundation Components On Jud Site, Mirabel W. Nkanor May 2023

Evaluation Of The Geotechnical And Foundation Components On Jud Site, Mirabel W. Nkanor

Honors Theses

This thesis is part of the senior design final project of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Mississippi. Geotechnical and foundation analyses were done on a proposed construction project for a multi-family home in Orlando, Florida. This evaluation done in this thesis follows the pre-existing geotechnical report on the side, USDA soil reports, ASCE Code 32-01 (Design of Foundations), and ASCE-7 Section 12.31.1 (Foundations and Superstructure-to-Foundation Connections).

A structural system was selected from the proposed location, on the corner of South Conway and Judge Road, and an evaluation of the Bearing Load capacity was completed to determine the …

Measuring Foundation Course Modulus Using Falling Weight Deflectometer, Light Weight Deflectometer, And Dynamic Cone Penetration, Bruce Barrett, Kellie Troxel, Brady Dresselhaus, David Hansen Dec 2021

Measuring Foundation Course Modulus Using Falling Weight Deflectometer, Light Weight Deflectometer, And Dynamic Cone Penetration, Bruce Barrett, Kellie Troxel, Brady Dresselhaus, David Hansen

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of measuring bituminous foundation course modulus under concrete roadways by comparing testing results derived before and after paving using FWD, Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD), and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP). The foundation course modulus was determined using FWD data and Darwin design software (‘93 AASHTO). Results from Phase I data collection, which occurred prior to pavement placement, provided a baseline for comparison. The maximum modulus was 398,000 PSI and the minimum was 85,000 PSI, yielding a range of 315,000 PSI and an average modulus of 123,000 PSI over the length of …

Characterization Of Unknown Bridge Foundations, Saman Rashidyan Jul 2017

Characterization Of Unknown Bridge Foundations, Saman Rashidyan

Civil Engineering ETDs

The National Bridge Inventory (NBI) recognized 86,133 bridges in the United States have no foundation data on record in 2003. It is evident that an unknown percentage of the 86,133 bridges identified by NBI with missing foundation data could also be highly vulnerable to scouring induced by water flow coupled with erodible soils. Conventional excavation, coring and boring excavations to identify unknown bridge foundation depths and types are deemed to be expensive, destructive, and limited in their application to the unknown foundation problem. Many surface and borehole nondestructive testing (NDT) technologies have been developed for this purpose. Three economical proven …

Investigation Of Hybrid Foundation System For Offshore Wind Turbine, Ahmed Mohamed Reda Abdelkader Dec 2015

Investigation Of Hybrid Foundation System For Offshore Wind Turbine, Ahmed Mohamed Reda Abdelkader

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Green energy resources are essential to meet the growing energy demands in the near future while reducing the effects of global warming. Offshore wind energy is one of the main efficient renewable energy sources which drive the ever increasing expansion of offshore wind farms globally. Wind energy technologies are improving making energy production more affordable, which helped Denmark, for example, to produce about 25% of its energy. One of the main challenges for offshore wind projects is the cost of foundation construction, which represents about 40% of the total cost. The investigated hybrid foundation system has the potential to reduce …

Static And Seismic Soil Culvert Interaction, Osama Salem A. Abuhajar Sep 2013

Static And Seismic Soil Culvert Interaction, Osama Salem A. Abuhajar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Failures of box culverts under static and earthquake loads can cause significant economic loss. Therefore, it is important to investigate the soil-culvert interaction of box culverts to understand their responses to such loads. The response of buried box culverts is a complex soil-structure interaction problem, where the relative stiffness between the soil and the structure is a critical factor. Soil arching is an important aspect of the soil-culvert interaction problem, and results in the redistribution of free-field stresses due to the presence of buried structures and leads to an increase or decrease in the loading around box culverts.

A series …

Investigation Of Hybrid Monopile-Footing Foundation Systems Subjected To Combined Loading, Mohamed El-Marassi Sep 2011

Investigation Of Hybrid Monopile-Footing Foundation Systems Subjected To Combined Loading, Mohamed El-Marassi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Laterally loaded structures such as wind turbines, offshore platforms, earth retaining structures, bridge abutments and many other structures impose complex loading regimes on the supporting foundations. These foundations are typically subjected to combinations of vertical, horizontal and moment loadings resulting from the vertical self-weight of the foundation system, superstructure, soil fill and surface surcharge, in addition to significant lateral loads and moments due to soil pressures, wind loads, waves and currents. In the case of shallow foundations, the weight and dimensions must be sufficient to resist tilting and sliding, whilst at the same time preventing failure of the subsoil and …

Analysis And Behavior Of A Rigid Foundation Massif Under The Effect Of Vibrations (Application Of Barakan Method), Iddir Rabah, Laradi Nadir Mar 2001

Analysis And Behavior Of A Rigid Foundation Massif Under The Effect Of Vibrations (Application Of Barakan Method), Iddir Rabah, Laradi Nadir

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This communication proposes a count mode of a rigid foundation massif frequencies, relaxing on a homogeneous soil, semi-infinite having an elastic linear behavior. Several data programs process using the finite elements method, are proposed for the dynamic analysis. Nevertheless, these programs don’t appear the physical phenomenon yielded, they depend on data introduced by the user and are applicable only for the elastic foundation massifs. The BARKAN method is an analytic one that appears the physical behavior of the different displacements and their coupling modes, the involvement of soil by its different dynamic stiffness modules, as well as a constant verification …
