Landslides in natural slopes of residual soil are a common problem encountered in tropical regions. Guwahati city, located in Assam in the north-eastern part of India, is an urban watershed covered by a number of hills and hillocks that are capped with lateritic soil. Although the slopes originally consisted of hard and strong rocks, their stability have been impaired by weathering, heavy rainfall and seepage flows. “The dam builder has substantial control over the properties of the structure he builds, but he must take the foundation as it is furnished by nature.” (Cedergren, 1989) This paper presents the case of an earth dam built on a permeable foundation where seepage problems nearly caused failure of the dam. Early during first filling, before the lake was even half full, the dam showed significant seepage. Seepage boils appeared at the dam’s toe, indicating the onset of piping failure through the foundation. Although seepage boils indicating a failure mechanism appeared, dam failure was averted. During the early hours of 18-02-1995 a landslide occurred at Malakasa, on the 36th kilometer of the highway joining Greece's main cities, Athens and Thessaloniki. The computed deformed geometry using this model agrees reasonably well with that measured. The back-estimated soil strength of 16o is in the range of the measured values (8-19o). Finally, state-of-the-art stability analyses, using the back-estimated residual soil strength, illustrated that the location of the slip surface can be predicted if it is assumed that only the saturated soil below the water table loses its strength.

Experimental investigations of the behaviour of many row landslide protection structures are carried out on models in trays with the sandy soil under the action of the lateral landslide soil pressure. About 15 to 20 workers die annually in labor accidents attributed to slope failure or rock fall during slope excavations in Japan. In this paper, a case history of slope failure occurred during the reconstruction of retaining wall is presented. The geotechnical centrifuge model tests are conducted to investigate the mechanism of slope failure. This paper focuses on the influence of wall stiffness and embedded depths of sheet piles or pipes on the prevention of slope failure. This paper introduces a slope movement and related railway track movement at Sebastopol, South Wales, UK. The monitoring results including slope movements and groundwater levels are summarised and presented. The slope at Sebastopol has a long history of instability. Because of continued gradual movement of the railway line and accelerated movement in 2004, a series of small diameter ‘Grundomat’ micro-piles were installed alongside the track early in 2005 to increase the shear resistance of the underlying soil and to reduce the rate of slope movement to a small but manageable amount. The paper pertains to the studies undertaken to investigate the efficacy and correctness of a numerical scheme developed by the authors to predict the stability of slopes. As such, a well documented failed test embankment has been reanalyzed using the suggested method for predicting the critical slip surface and the associated factor of safety. A comparison of the predicted failure surface (critical slip surface) with the observed failure surface showed close agreement; the corresponding value of factor of safety was found to be close to unity. The natural river processes along a 30 m high riverbank of one of the largest tributaries to Lake Superior cause periodic landslides. After arresting toe erosion, local authorities needed to protect the infrastructure at the crest from further damage as the slope continued to flatten towards its long-term angle of repose. The two failures of the London Avenue Canal floodwalls contributed largely to the flooding of central New Orleans due to hurricane Katrina. In this paper, both failures are analyzed and compared to each other since the flood defenses are both located on permeable soils. Photo’s observation and calculations are used for the analysis. Both failures are caused by the permeable sand layer below the floodwall that allowed high pore water pressures to develop below the floodwall. We describe the use of Google Earth during and after a large damaging earthquake that struck the central Japan coast on 16 July 2007 to collect and organize damage information and guide the reconnaissance activities. This software enabled greater real-time collaboration among scientists and engineers. After the field investigation, the Google Earth map is used as a final reporting product that was directly linked to the more traditional research report document. Finally, we analyze the use of the software within the context of a post-disaster reconnaissance investigation, and link it to student use of Google Earth in field situations.

The Chi-Chi earthquake and subsequent typhoon events induced severe landslides and debris flows in the watershed of Tachia river. It inflicted severe damage to the power generation facilities and highway links. For the rehabilitation planning, quantitative assessment of landslides, debris flows and river deposits were conducted by using aerial photos and satellite images obtained at six stages of earthquake and typhoon events. The Kocaeli Earthquake (M=7.4) struck Turkey on August 17, 1999 and caused significant damage along Izmit Bay. Following the earthquake, the authors investigated the field performance at improved soil sites. Of particular interest was the Carrefour Shopping Center that was under construction during the earthquake. The reclaimed site is underlain by strata of saturated soft clays, silts, and liquefiable loose sands. Small-diameter jet-grout columns had been installed at close spacings to reduce settlements and prevent liquefaction-related damage beneath footings and mats. The College of the Redwoods (CR) located near Eureka, California would like to upgrade a series of existing buildings that are unfortunately located on secondary faults associated with the active Little Salmon Fault (LSF) zone. In the early 1990’s a deterministic value of the maximum dip-slip displacement that had occurred on one of these secondary faults located beneath the southeast building corner of the former library was measured to be 1.7 feet. Blasting test studies have one drawback with regard to earthquake studies; they are concerned with vibrations of much smaller amplitude than those normally encountered in earthquakes. Consequently, blasting studies can be used to calibrate dam behavior in a linear elastic range. Accuracy of numerical models should be improved by full scale tests and in situ earthquake records. In this research, first of all a short review of different classical and modern signal processing methods is presented.
