Application Of A Novel Catalyst In The Esterification Of Mixed Industrial Palm Oil For Biodiesel Production
Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya
Mixed industrial palm oil (MIPO) is proposed in this study as a renewable and agro-industrial raw material to produce biodiesel fuel. MIPO was obtained by mixing of acidic crude palm oil with sludge palm oil. Due to the high level of free fatty acid (FFA) in MIPO (8.5 %), esterification is needed to remove the acidity to the minimum level before biodiesel production. This is the first time 1-propanesulphonic acid (1-PSA) has been introduced as a catalyst for the pretreatment of MIPO. Using optimum conditions, the FFA content was successfully reduced from 8.5 % to less than 1 %. The …

Effects Of Wetting Agents And Approaching Anode On Lead Migration In Electrokinetic Soil Remediation, Yee Sern Ng, Bhaskar Sen Gupta, Mohd Ali Hashim
Ng Yee-Sern
Approaching anode is one of the enhancement techniques in electrokinetic soil remediation. This technique is reported to give promising migration for heavy metals under shorter treatment time and at lower cost in comparison to normal fixed anode system. In the present study, the effectiveness of fixed anode and approaching anode techniques in electrokinetic soil remediation for lead migration under different types of wetting agents (0.01M NaNO3 and 0.1M citric acid) was investigated. The study showed that the use of citric acid enhanced lead migration in comparison to NaNO3. For NaNO3 tests, lead was found to accumulate in the middle of …

Performance Evaluation Of Two-Stage Electrokinetic Washing As Soil Remediation Method For Lead Removal Using Different Wash Solutions, Yee Sern Ng, Bhaskar Sen Gupta, Mohd Ali Hashim
Ng Yee-Sern
The study explores the application of a two-stage electrokinetic washing system on remediation of lead (Pb) contaminated soil. The process involved an initial soil washing, followed by an electrokinetic process. The use of electrokinetic process in soil washing not only provided additional driving force for transporting the desorbed Pb away from the soil but also reduced the high usage of wash solution. In this study, the effect of NaNO3, HNO3, citric acid and EDTA as wash solutions on two-stage electrokinetic washing system were evaluated. The results revealed that a two-stage electrokinetic washing process enhanced Pb removal efficiency by 2.52-9.08% and …

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet
This study introduces a hybrid model based on the Thomas equation and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the modeling of unsymmetrical breakthrough curves obtained from the fluoride adsorption on bone char. Experimental results of kinetics, isotherms and breakthrough curves of fluoride adsorption on two commercial bone chars have been used for analyzing the capabilities and limitations of this hybrid ANN model. Performance of this hybrid model has been studied and compared with respect to the results of traditional linear regression of the Thomas breakthrough equation at different operating conditions of packed-bed adsorption columns. Results showed that an improvement in the …

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Wojciech Budzianowski
This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.

The activated carbon is the universal adsorbent used in the removal of water pollutants such as dyes, heavy metals, fluoride and arsenic, among others. The commercial activated carbons are generally obtained from wood and coconut shell. However, in recent years, other lignocellulosic materials have been used as precursors in the synthesis of this adsorbent for specific applications. This book discusses and analyzes key aspects concerning to the preparation, characterization and application of activated carbons obtained from different lignocellulosic materials. Based on the fact that the activated carbon is used in a broad variety of treatment systems, this book will be …

João F Gomes
This paper, reports experimental work on the use of new heterogeneous solid basic catalysts for biodiesel production: double oxides of Mg and Al, produced by calcination, at high temperature, of MgAl lamellar structures, the hydrotalcites (HT). The most suitable catalyst system studied are hydrotalcite Mg:Al 2:1 calcinated at 507 ºC and 700 ºC, leading to higher values of FAME also in the second reaction stage. One of the prepared catalysts resulted in 97.1 % Fatty acids methyl esters (FAME) in the 1st reaction step, 92.2 % FAME in the 2nd reaction step and 34 % FAME in the 3rd reaction …

Notice On A Case Study On The Utilization Of Wind Energy Potential On A Remote And Isolated Small Wastewater Treatment Plant, João F. Gomes
João F Gomes
Small wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are frequently located, by necessity, in remote and isolated sites, which increases the difficulty of its energy supply. Some of them are located near the seaside, in environmental sensible zones, and due to tourism activity of these sites, seasonal effects related with population size fluctuation can occur, which can originate certain inefficiencies concerning WWTP design and energy supply. The objective of this paper is to describe a step by step procedure for evaluation of the wind potential of sites that are dependent of in-situ energy generation, as well as, a case study on the utilization …

Behavior Of Hydrophobic Ionic Liquids As Liquid Membranes On Phenol Removal: Experimental Study And Optimization, Yee Sern Ng, Jayakumar Natesan Subramaniam, Mohd Ali Hashim
Ng Yee-Sern
Room temperature ionic liquids show potential as an alternative to conventional organic membrane solvents mainly due to their properties of low vapor pressure, low volatility and they are often stable. In the present work, the technical feasibilities of room temperature ionic liquids as bulk liquid membranes for phenol removal were investigated experimentally. Three ionic liquids with high hydrophobicity were used and their phenol removal efficiency, membrane stability and membrane loss were studied. Besides that, the effects of several parameters, namely feed phase pH, feed concentration, NaOH concentration and stirring speeds on the performance of best ionic liquid membrane were also …
Study On The Glycerolysis Reaction Of High Free Fatty Acid Oils For Use As Biodiesel Feedstock, João F. Gomes
Study On The Glycerolysis Reaction Of High Free Fatty Acid Oils For Use As Biodiesel Feedstock, João F. Gomes
João F Gomes
Biodiesel is the main alternative to fossil diesel and it may be produced from different feedstocks such as semi-refined vegetable oils, waste frying oils or animal fats. However, these feedstocks usually contain significant amounts of free fatty acids (FFA) that make them inadequate for the direct base catalyzed transesterification reaction (where the FFA content should be lower than 4%). The present work describes a possible method for the pre-treatment of oils with high content of FFA (20 to 50%) by esterification with glycerol. In order to reduce the FFA content, the reaction between these FFA and an esterification agent is …
Design Of A New Test Chamber For Evaluation Of The Toxicity Of Rubber Infill, João F. Gomes
Design Of A New Test Chamber For Evaluation Of The Toxicity Of Rubber Infill, João F. Gomes
João F Gomes
A test chamber was projected and built (according to ISO 16000-9 Standard) to simulate atmospheric conditions experienced by rubber infill (when applied in synthetic turf pitches) and measure accurately the airborne emissions of pollutants such as dusts and volatile organic compounds (VOC), as well as pollutants present in leacheates. It should be pointed out that standard ISO 16000-9 is only concerned with the determination of the emission of VOC from building products and furnishing (not specific of synthetic turf materials), while other standards are concerned with the emission of leacheates only. This procedure is to be considered as a technical …
