Removal Of Residual Stress In 3d Printed Polymers, Christian Jenkins Jan 2024

Removal Of Residual Stress In 3d Printed Polymers, Christian Jenkins

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project aims to investigate the relationship between stress relaxation and the reduction of dimensional shrinkage and warping in 3D printed polymers produced through fused filament fabrication. The hypothesis suggests that residual stress in 3D printed structures results from factors such as temperature differences, molecular-level contributions, and rapid cooling, causing post-printing warpage and damage. To mitigate these issues, the project proposes annealing 3D printed polymers in a hot sandbath to allow stress relaxation without warping. The study will employ a Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) machine to assess mechanical properties of relaxed and unrelaxed samples, comparing their effectiveness. The project's timeline …

A Comparison Study Of Two Synthesis Methods For Polymer Of Intrinsic Microporosity 1 (Pim-1), Conor S. Perry Jun 2017

A Comparison Study Of Two Synthesis Methods For Polymer Of Intrinsic Microporosity 1 (Pim-1), Conor S. Perry

Materials Engineering

Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) are an emerging polymeric material class for molecular sieving applications. This study focuses on PIM-1, an alternating copolymer of 5,5’,6,6’-tetrahydroxy-3,3’,3,3’-tetramethyl-1,1’-spirobisindane and tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile synthesized via nucleophilic aromatic substitution. PIM-1 been widely studied as a gas separating material and filtering membrane, but in this case, it is studied as a battery separator material. PIM-1’s microporous (pore diameters less than 2 nm) structure allows smaller favorable ions to transport while preventing larger ions and compounds from transporting. Two synthesis methods, round bottom flask synthesis and ball mill synthesis, of PIM-1 are compared to see any improved characteristics. The …

Designed Polymers By Carbocationic Macromolecular Engineering, Joseph Kennedy, Bela Ivan

Joseph P. Kennedy

The first comprehensive treatment of its subject, this book is for polymer professionals interested in producing polymeric materials designed for specific applications. Carbocationic macromolecular engineering is one of the most powerful techniques for this purpose. Its appeal has been heightened by the recent discovery of living cationic polymerizations. The book is divided into sections on theory and practice, with the first part consisting of a general introduction to carbocationic polymerization fundamentals and mechanisms, including the latest views on living carbocationic polymerizations. The second part is a comprehensive examination of specific products and processes. The emphasis is on new products and …

Carbocationic Polymerization, Joseph Kennedy Jul 2014

Carbocationic Polymerization, Joseph Kennedy

Joseph P. Kennedy

This article summarizes fundamental and general aspects of carbocationic polymerizations, with a historical overview and up-to-date references. Following general considerations, the basic elements of carbocationic polymerization, such as monomers, initiating systems, solvents, and temperature, are discussed. Special attention is given to carbocation stability and monomer nucleophilicity, and dynamic interactions. The section on the kinetics of carbocationic polymerization presents current understanding of the elementary reactions—initiation, propagation, termination, and transfer reactions, and copolymerization. Controlled (living) carbocationic polymerization is discussed in a separate section. Finally, industrial carbocationic polymerizations are reviewed.

A Localized Controlled Delivery System Utilizing A Block Copolymer To Improve The Current Paradigm Of Chemotherapy, Jason Olbrich Aug 2013

A Localized Controlled Delivery System Utilizing A Block Copolymer To Improve The Current Paradigm Of Chemotherapy, Jason Olbrich

All Dissertations

The goal of the field of Bioengineering has always been to bring about a better standard of care for patients. As a field encompassing a broad array of researchers and talents, such improvements often are brought about through the integration of different fields. This work advances the integration of controlled delivery and chemotherapy. The use of cytotoxic chemotherapy has become and will continue to be a powerful tool for the treatment of solid malignancies. Conventional dose scheduling of cytotoxic agents and newer biological response modifiers are investigated under a clinical paradigm initially designed to identify a drug dose that elicits …

My Life With Polymer Science: Scientific And Personal Memoirs, Otto Vogl Dec 2004

My Life With Polymer Science: Scientific And Personal Memoirs, Otto Vogl

Otto Vogl

My "life story" will begin with my formative years, my childhood and student days at the University of Vienna, including my dissertation. It will be followed by my teaching appointment as an Instructor at the II. Chemical Institute of the University of Vienna. The urge to see other lands, learn other languages and scientific methods led to the Wandering Years that brought me to the United States. After three years spent as a Research Associate at the University of Michigan and at Princeton University I spent more than 13 years in an industrial career at the Du Pont Company in …
