The validity of a biochemical reactor model often is evaluated by comparing transient responses to experimental data. Dynamic simulation can be a rather inefficient and ineffective tool for analyzing bioreactor models that exhibit complex nonlinear behavior. Bifurcation analysis is a powerful tool for obtaining a more efficient and complete characterization of the model behavior. To illustrate the power of bifurcation analysis, the steady-state and transient behavior of three continuous bioreactor models consisting of a small number of ordinary differential equations are investigated.
