Nanostructured Metal Thin Films As Components Of Composite Membranes For Separations And Catalysis, Michael J. Detisch Jan 2020

Nanostructured Metal Thin Films As Components Of Composite Membranes For Separations And Catalysis, Michael J. Detisch

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Novel metallic thin film composite membranes are synthesized and evaluated in this work for improved separations and catalysis capabilities. Advances in technology that allow for improved membrane performance in solvent separations are desirable for low molecular weight organic separation applications such as those in pharmaceutical industries. Additionally, the introduction of catalytic materials into membrane systems allow for optimization of complex processes in a single step. By adding a nanostructured metallic thin film to its surface, a polymer membrane may be modified to exhibit these improved properties. Using magnetron sputtering, thin metal films may be deposited on commercially available membranes to …

Self-Cleaning Nanocomposite Membranes With Phosphorene-Based Pore Fillers For Water Treatment, Joyner Eke, Katherine Elder, Isabel Escobar Sep 2018

Self-Cleaning Nanocomposite Membranes With Phosphorene-Based Pore Fillers For Water Treatment, Joyner Eke, Katherine Elder, Isabel Escobar

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Phosphorene is a two-dimensional material exfoliated from bulk phosphorus and it possesses a band gap. Specifically, relevant to the field of membrane science, the band gap of phosphorene provides it with potential photocatalytic properties, which could be explored in making reactive membranes that can self-clean. The goal of this study was to develop an innovative and robust membrane that is able to control and reverse fouling with minimal changes in membrane performance. To this end, for the first time, membranes have been embedded with phosphorene. Membrane modification was verified by the presence of phosphorus on membranes, along with changes in …

Green Synthesis Nanocomposite Membranes, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Vasile Smuleac, Rajender S. Varma, Subhas K. Sikdar

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

A nanocomposite membrane includes a macroporous polymer membrane having a plurality of pores. A plurality of metal nanoparticles are synthesized and immobilized within those plurality of pores. The nanoparticles are reduced and capped with a green reducing and capping agent such as green tea extract.

Chemical Processing Cell With Nanostructured Membranes, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Scott R. Lewis, Saurav Datta Nov 2015

Chemical Processing Cell With Nanostructured Membranes, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Scott R. Lewis, Saurav Datta

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

A chemical processing cell includes an upstream membrane and a downstream membrane. The upstream membrane generates a first reaction product. The downstream membrane converts the first reaction product to a second reaction product.

Dynamic Relaxation Properties Of Aromatic Polyimides And Polymer Nanocomposites, Anthony C. Comer Jan 2011

Dynamic Relaxation Properties Of Aromatic Polyimides And Polymer Nanocomposites, Anthony C. Comer

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

The dynamic relaxation characteristics of Matrimid® (BTDA-DAPI) polyimide and several functionalized aromatic polyimides have been investigated using dynamic mechanical and dielectric methods. The functionalized polyimides were thermally rearranged to generate polybenzoxazole membranes with controlled free volume characteristics. All polyimides have application in membrane separations and exhibit three motional processes with increasing temperature: two sub-glass relaxations (ƴ and β transitions), and the glass-rubber (α) transition. For Matrimid, the low-temperature ƴ transition is purely non-cooperative, while the β sub-glass transition shows a more cooperative character as assessed via the Starkweather method. For the thermally rearranged polyimides, the ƴ transition is a …

Co2-Selective Membranes Containing Amino Groups, W.S. Winston Ho Mar 2006

Co2-Selective Membranes Containing Amino Groups, W.S. Winston Ho

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

Novel compositions suitable for fabrication of CO2-selective membranes are disclosed. In one aspect, the present invention is directed to compositions comprising polyimide/polyamine blends and copolymers, and to compositions comprising interfacially polymerized polyamides. In another aspect this invention is directed to novel CO2-selective membranes comprising such polyimide/polyamine blends and copolymers, and to novel CO2-selective membranes comprising interfacially polymerized polyamides. In yet another aspect, the present invention is directed to a novel water-gas-shift (WGS) reactor comprising the novel CO2-selective membranes. Advantageously, the use of the novel CO2-selective membrane allows alteration of the …
