The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok Apr 2019

The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok

Scholar Week 2016 - present

The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) has been identified as a promising candidate to replace aging nuclear reactors around the world. However, a suitable combination of molten salt and container material needs to be found in order to reduce the potential for corrosion in the MSR before it can be considered commercially viable. FLiNaK molten salt and the nickel-based alloy Hastelloy N have been identified as prime candidates for this function, but the severity of FLiNaK corrosion in Hastelloy N requires additional study before this combination can be used in the operation of a MSR. In this study, Hastelloy N samples …

The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok

Honors Program Projects

The desire to reduce pollution caused by electricity production has led to a call for the replacement of conventional fossil fuel power plants. In order to fulfill this goal, a large amount of new nuclear reactors is required, and this provides the opportunity to put new and innovative reactor designs into production. The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) is one of the most promising concepts, but a suitable combination of molten salt and container material needs to be found to reduce the potential for corrosion before the concept can be put into production. FLiNaK molten salt and the nickel-based alloy Hastelloy …

The authors have fabricated combinatorial Ni–Ti–Pt ternary metal gate thin film libraries on HfO2 using magnetron co-sputtering to investigate flatband voltage shift (ΔVfb) , work function (Φm) , and leakage current density (JL) variations. A more negative ΔVfb is observed close to the Ti-rich corner than at the Ni- and Pt-rich corners, implying smaller Φm near the Ti-rich corners and higher Φm near the Ni- and Pt-rich corners. In addition, measured JL values can be explained consistently with the observed Φm variations. Combinatorial methodologies prove to be useful in surveying the large compositional space of ternary alloymetal gate electrode systems.

Oxidation-Resistant, Solution-Processed Plasmonic Ni Nanochain-SioX (X < 2) Selective Solar Thermal Absorbers, Xiaobai Yu, Xiaoxin Wang, Qinglin Zhang, Juchuan Li, Jifeng Liu Aug 2014

Oxidation-Resistant, Solution-Processed Plasmonic Ni Nanochain-SioX (X < 2) Selective Solar Thermal Absorbers, Xiaobai Yu, Xiaoxin Wang, Qinglin Zhang, Juchuan Li, Jifeng Liu

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Metal oxidation at high temperatures has long been a challenge in cermet solar thermal absorbers, which impedes the development of atmospherically stable, high-temperature, high-performance concentrated solar power (CSP) systems. In this work, we demonstrate solution-processed Ni nanochain-SiOx (x < 2) and Ni nanochain-SiO2 selective solar thermal absorbers that exhibit a strong anti-oxidation behavior up to 600 °C in air. The thermal stability is far superior to previously reported Ni nanoparticle-Al2O3 selective solar thermal absorbers, which readily oxidize at 450 °C. The SiOx (x < 2) and SiO2 matrices are derived from hydrogen silsesquioxane and tetraethyl orthosilicate precursors, respectively, which comprise Si-O cage-like …

Travelling In Cuba, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Contact with Cuban scientists was established in 1986 when two researchers from Centro de Investigaciones para Industria Minero Metalurgica in Havana visited Laval University to get acquainted with research activities in the area of extractive metallurgy. This was followed in early 1987 by two more researchers from the same centre. Invitations were then received in late 1987, 1989, and 2008 to visit the nickel refineries in Cuba and to hold seminars at the University of Havana. The present report outlines these activities.

Structured Materials For Catalytic And Sensing Applications, Selma Hokenek Jan 2013

Structured Materials For Catalytic And Sensing Applications, Selma Hokenek

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The optical and chemical properties of the materials used in catalytic and sensing applications directly determine the characteristics of the resultant catalyst or sensor. It is well known that a catalyst needs to have high activity, selectivity, and stability to be viable in an industrial setting. The hydrogenation activity of palladium catalysts is known to be excellent, but the industrial applications are limited by the cost of obtaining catalyst in amounts large enough to make their use economical. As a result, alloying palladium with a cheaper, more widely available metal while maintaining the high catalytic activity seen in monometallic catalysts …

Electrodeposition Of Nickel Nanowires And Nanotubes Using Various Templates, Asli Ertan, Surendra N. Tewari, Orhan Talu Dec 2008

Electrodeposition Of Nickel Nanowires And Nanotubes Using Various Templates, Asli Ertan, Surendra N. Tewari, Orhan Talu

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Nickel nanotubes and nanowires are grown by galvanostatic electrodeposition in the pores of 1000, 100, and 15 nm polycarbonate as well as in anodised alumina membranes at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The effects of pore size, porosity, electrodeposition time, effective current density, and pore aspect ratio are investigated. Nickel nanotube structures are obtained with 1000 nm pore size polycarbonate membrane without any prior treatment method. At the early stages of electrodeposition hollow nickel nanotubes are produced and nanotubes turn into nanowires at longer depositon times. As effective current density accounting for the membrane porosity decreases, the axial …

Electrochemical Synthesis And Characterization Of The Nickel Electropolyurushiol Coordination Polymer, Feng Gao, Guo-Cai Shen, Jie-Yuan Tang, Wen-Gong Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The nickel electropolyurushiol coordination polymer(EPU Ni 2+ ) was obtained by the reaction between nickel chloride isopropyl alcohol solution with electropolyurushiol (EPU).The electrochemical polymerization of urushiol and the preparation of nickel electropolyurushiol coordination polymer were investigated. The coordination polymer was characterized by XPS,FT_IR,DMTA and AES methods, and its composition and structure were determined. The content of Ni 2+ reached up to 7.5%. It was shown that there was certain coordination between Ni 2+ and electropolyurushiol in the coordination polymer, thus cross_links were formed. Therefore the glass transition temperature of the coordination polymer increased and heat resistance was enhanced considerably.

Investigation Of A Complex Lithium Cobalt Nickel Oxide As Lithium Ion Battery Cathode Materials Prepared By A New Citrate Sol-Gel Method, Jing-Li Han, Qing Guo Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The synthesis and electrochemical characteristics of lithium cobalt nickel oxide as cathode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries were investigated. It was clarified from these investigations that lithium cobalt nickel oxide has been produced from basic cobalt carbonate, basic nickel carbonate, lithium carbonate, and citrate. LiNi 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 prepared under the stream of oxygen gas showed a higher cycling capacity of (~190 mAhg 1 ).
