Potential Of Metal Recovery From Coal Combustion Products. Part I. Physicochemical Characterization, Dariusz Bradlo, Witold Zukowski, Piotr Czuprynski, Konrad Jura

Witold Zukowski

The paper presents physicochemical characteristic of coal combustion products: fly ashes from three stages of electrostatic dust collecting system (FAI, FAII, FAIII), slag (S) and slurry from wet flue gas desulphurization (S-wFGD). Fly ashes are classifi ed as ‘siliceous’ or ‘sialic-high acid’. Th e concentrations of selected heavy metals indicate that their values increase in accordance with consecutive stages of dust collecting system. Fly ash FAIII and slurry from wet FGD have the largest heavy metals content. The results show the increment of lanthanides and ittrium (REY) contents in CCPs from slag, through FAII and FAI to S-wFGD and FAIII.

Solar And Visible Light Driven Photocatalysis For Sacrificial Hydrogen Generation And Water Detoxification With Chemically Modified Ti02, Pankaj Chowdhury

PC

Photocatalysis is a recognized approach where light energy is employed to excite the semiconductor material producing electron/hole pair which eventually involves in the detoxification of pollutants and/or water splitting producing hydrogen. Existing photocatalysts suffer from poor activity or no activity in visible light irradiation which restricts them from solar light utilization. This work is focused on two key applications of photocatalysis (i) sacrificial hydrogen generation, and (ii) phenol degradation in visible and/or solar light. Platinum was loaded on TiO2 photocatalyst by solar photo-deposition method. Eosin Y dye was used as a sensitizer for sensitization of platinum loaded TiO2 photocatalyst. The …

Effects Of Wetting Agents And Approaching Anode On Lead Migration In Electrokinetic Soil Remediation, Yee Sern Ng, Bhaskar Sen Gupta, Mohd Ali Hashim

Ng Yee-Sern

Approaching anode is one of the enhancement techniques in electrokinetic soil remediation. This technique is reported to give promising migration for heavy metals under shorter treatment time and at lower cost in comparison to normal fixed anode system. In the present study, the effectiveness of fixed anode and approaching anode techniques in electrokinetic soil remediation for lead migration under different types of wetting agents (0.01M NaNO3 and 0.1M citric acid) was investigated. The study showed that the use of citric acid enhanced lead migration in comparison to NaNO3. For NaNO3 tests, lead was found to accumulate in the middle of …

Performance Evaluation Of Two-Stage Electrokinetic Washing As Soil Remediation Method For Lead Removal Using Different Wash Solutions, Yee Sern Ng, Bhaskar Sen Gupta, Mohd Ali Hashim

Ng Yee-Sern

The study explores the application of a two-stage electrokinetic washing system on remediation of lead (Pb) contaminated soil. The process involved an initial soil washing, followed by an electrokinetic process. The use of electrokinetic process in soil washing not only provided additional driving force for transporting the desorbed Pb away from the soil but also reduced the high usage of wash solution. In this study, the effect of NaNO3, HNO3, citric acid and EDTA as wash solutions on two-stage electrokinetic washing system were evaluated. The results revealed that a two-stage electrokinetic washing process enhanced Pb removal efficiency by 2.52-9.08% and …

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.

Sacrificial Hydrogen Generation From Formaldehyde With Pt/Tio2 Photocatalyst In Solar Radiation, Pankaj Chowdhury, Ghodsieh Malekshoar, Madhumita Ray, Jesse Zhu, Ajay Ray

P

In this work, solar TiO2 photocatalysis was used for sacrificial hydrogen generation from formaldehyde. Platinum was loaded onto a TiO2 photocatalyst by a solar photodeposition method to suppress the electron/hole recombination process. The photocatalyst inside the reactor was irradiated from the top with a solar simulator. Photocatalytic hydrogen generation from formaldehyde was influenced by the solution pH, platinum loading (wt %) on TiO2, catalyst concentration, light intensity, and initial formaldehyde concentration. A Langmuir-type model fitted well with the experimental data, and the values of surface reaction rate constant, k, and the adsorption equilibrium constant, K, are 2.3598 × 10–6 mol …
