This note provides an example of items that are included in a specification for center pivots. It is a supplement to design drawings that have numerous additional details. This example combines items from various ITRC jobs, and therefore the units are not consistent (there is a mix of metric and English units). The intention, however, is not to provide a precise specification that can be replicated, but rather to show the key items that are typically included.

The Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC) is currently testing several non-contact volumetric flow meter models under their technical services contracts with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). In April 2020, a Sommer RQ-30A non-contact flow meter was installed at Banta Carbona Irrigation Districts (BCID) Main Canal approximately 180 ft downstream of the discharge from Pumping Plant 1. The meter was mounted at midspan along a footbridge that crosses the throat of an ITRC designed subcritical contraction structure (see Figure 1). Flow measurement is an important component of modern irrigation delivery systems. As irrigation projects are modernized, flow measurement devices are being installed in more non-traditional applications. Some applications feature a combination of characteristics that eliminate traditional flow measurement structures. Furthermore, as regulations obligate more districts to report real time diversions, redundant flow measurement devices using different methods or technologies become necessary to reduce the potential for temporary gaps in diversion data. In these cases, non-contact type flow measurement devices may be of interest. Two non-contact flow meters were installed at different irrigation district canals.
