Laser Micropatterning Effects On Corrosion Resistance Of Pure Magnesium Surfaces, Yahya Efe Yayoglu

Magnesium and its alloys are good candidates to manufacture medical implants. They have excellent biocompatibility and because they biodegrade secondary surgical operation to remove the implant could be eliminated. However, in aqueous environments, magnesium alloys rapidly corrode, resulting in premature degradation of the implant along with biologically intolerable hydrogen gas generation. In literature, there are multiple studies focused on creating water repelling hydrophobic magnesium surfaces in order to decrease corrosion rates. Hydrophobic properties can be achieved by creation of a roughness profile on an initially smooth surface combined with a treatment that reduces the free surface energy. In theory, hydrophobic …

The biggest challenge with magnesium alloy biodegradable implants is the rapid corrosion at the earlier stages of the healing process after implantation. In this research, the impact of surface roughness generated by different means on the corrosion rate of AZ31 magnesium alloy in a simulated biologic environment is investigated. In order to perform accurate experimentation, an in vitro setup is assembled that simulates the human body environment accurately has been prepared using Schinhammer’s in vitro immersion testing setup and Kokubo’s Simulated Body Fluid (SBF). The purpose of a pediatric cardiology consultation is to inform, or educate, the patient and family of all aspects surrounding a certain congenital heart defect. Consultation education methods and materials may include verbal descriptions, two-dimensional (2-D) heart diagrams, and take-home pamphlets. Because the human heart is a complex three-dimensional (3-D) object, the problem lies within the clarity to which these methods are performed by the doctors and understood by the patients and families.
